magazine. “Making Light Work” runs through solar sail basics for an audience that may seem surprising but I can tell you from my own flying days that as we used to wait in the pilot’s lounge for students to arrive we would often kick around outlandish concepts like deep space missions (and there were always a few dog-eared copies of Friedman speculates about sails kilometers wide in the area of 0.1 microns in thickness ultralight films that would when the photons from sunlight lost their punch take advantage of huge laser installations that could be focused for interstellar distances. Now we’re into Robert Forward territory and also in range of feasible interstellar missions. For as Friedman notes solar sails are the only technology we currently have that could complete such missions in a single human lifetime: What is exciting is that we know the way forward. We don’t have to invent some new physics (like matter/antimatter engines) and we don’t have to conjure up new technologies from science fiction (such as interstellar ramjets scooping up and using interstellar hydrogen molecules). Rather it’s all a matter of engineering—make the light sail materials thinner the spacecraft lighter and the lasers more powerful. Of course the demands are still huge power on the order of 100 gigawatts which means power stations located in space assembled in the inner solar system where solar radiation is much higher than here on Earth (presumably sails would be involved in ferrying the needed materials). And then there’s the problem of sail construction conceivably handled by making the sail out of plastics whose evaporation would leave only the needed molecules to reflect sunlight and laser photons. Imagine a square kilometer sail weighing just a few kilograms its electronics sprayed onto the sail rather than flying as a separate payload. Solar sail technology is no idle dream. After extensive study at Marshall Space Flight Center. NASA’s basic sail design has reached the point where space testing is the logical next step even as research continues in European venues like Germany’s. When we begin a serious push into solar sail technologies we’ll need to test these designs in near-Earth orbit and then move out into the Solar System. A logical mission for early sails will be as Friedman notes a replacement for the (ACE) a mission nearing the end of its lifetime. ACE operates at a where the gravitational forces of Sun and Earth balance some 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. A sail mission that could monitor solar weather (and warn us of solar storms) could offer a new kind of station-keeping one that uses the momentum imparted by photons to stay in position closer to the Sun without the need of remaining at the libration point. Such a position would among other things allow greater early warning of potential ionospheric disruptions. The range of sail missions available in coming decades will be huge but if we keep at it we may get to the point where building the kind of laser we’ll need for an interstellar mission becomes possible. Solar sailing is the kind of next-step technology that moves us from one-shot mission spectaculars like Apollo into the realm of a stable and long-term human presence expanding into the Solar System. For the short term we need to keep doing what Friedman and sail advocate Gregory Matloff are doing explaining and arguing for the needed steps to get sails into nearby space where their value for more complex missions will be obvious. The solar sail concept is intriguing however; I see a possible technical problem with laser powered solar sails. Assuming that the laser is operated from some ‘off-earth’ position enabling it to take advantage of enhanced solar energy in some form to power the laser the laser itself will experience an acceleration in the opposite direction to the beam it emits (the laser acting as a ‘photon propulsion system’) will it not? Assuming instead that the laser is anchored to some ‘air-less’ planet or moon; and fired frequently to propel a variety of spacecraft eventually the lasers accelerations so produced may alter the orbit of its base. I wonder has anyone done investigated this ‘reaction’ problem? Tim if the lasers are attached to the power collector system - solar of course - then the net thrust of the laser will always be less or equal to the energy received by the collectors. Thus the thrust will always be compensated for. Of course the problem then becomes how do we stop the collector from being carried away by the incoming reaction force of the sun’s energy? All sorts of tricky configurations of counterweights extra solar sails and so forth can be used and the reaction force can even be used to turn the facility into a “statite” which is suspended by the reaction force against the sun’s gravity - i e it’s not in orbit anymore. This can have advantages for aiming the lasers and so on. I would rather plant the lasers on the moon and use Helium-3 fusion instead. Of course nuclear fusion and in particular the He-3 variant first have to be mastered. But the advantages are 1) that you won’t need a huge solar power collecting area and 2) a solid base (surely laser pulse reaction won’t be a problem on a body as large as the moon) maybe even 3): He-3 mining on the moon (though not nearly as abundant as on Saturn and Uranus). Yes laser sails are a technology for interstellar flight that ia already (almost) available but as I have stated before interstellar flight (and a lot more) probably hinges on our mastering of (Helium-3) fusion. Nuclear fission engineers have 60 years of experience working with fission the process that powers atomic bombs and nuclear reactors. When the center of a radioactive atom is split apart the resulting charged atomic fragments fly away at 3 percent of the speed of light about 5,000 miles per second. Researchers led by George Chapline of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have designed a conceptual “fission fragment” reactor to harness those high-speed particles. Their reactor resembles a stack of vinyl records rotating into a cylindrical tower. Each “record” consists of graphite covered with radioactive fuel such as plutonium or americium. When the fuel spins into the tower it encounters additional radioactive material inside and triggers a controlled fission chain reaction. Powerful magnets around the reactor corral the resulting nuclear fragments so that they fly away in one direction producing an exhaust that could accelerate a rocket to 6 percent of the speed of light. To surpass 10 percent of the speed of light. Frisbee proposes building two fission rockets and staging them one on top of the other. The second stage effectively doubles the rocket’s top speed so the expanded version could zip along at 12 percent of the speed of light. Add another two stages to slow everything down by the end of the trip and you could pull into an orbit around a sister Earth in the Alpha Centauri system in 46 years. More-distant voyages would take more than a human lifetime however even using additional stages. To keep weight to a minimum the fission rocket would require a fast-decaying nuclear fuel such as americium. Americium is not a naturally occurring element so it would have to be processed from spent nuclear fuel. A mission to the next star would require roughly 2 million tons of americium not to mention a considerable amount of radiation shielding. Using cheaper uranium or plutonium would drive the fuel mass even higher. But the fundamental technology is ready to go. Has anyone ever considered more exotic proposals for interstellar probes? I may not be putting this idea over very well! Plasma crystals which are basically particles of dust suspended in a plasma can be very well organised structures. If a plasma crystal could be made stable in deep space could it serve as the basis for a spacecraft? Information could be stored in the structure of the crystal perhaps recording the electromagnetic or gravitational enviroment around another star. If dust particles from that solar system could be pursuaded to incorperate into the crystal it could even perform a sample return mission. As it would mass very little and be made largely of empty space both the energy requirements and collision problems would be much releived. I dont know if a plasma crystal could be manufactured that would remain stable in space but has anyone heard of anything comparable or equally exotic? Ion drives and all electric propulsion systems suffer from heat loss issues because the power source is separate to the rocket. Chemical nuclear thermal and pulse drives all lose their waste heat in their exhaust stream and have enough mass flow of propellant to use that for cooling if needed. Ion drives are pretty inefficient losing about 40% of the electrical power as heat in the ion making & accelerating process. Plasma drives are pretty efficient depending on the propellant heating system - VASIMR and helicon thrusters both use RF heating that can be 90% efficient in converting electricity into heat. But the magnets in the VASIMR system do need cooling. But the real heat loss problem is the power source - nuclear reactors for example require massive cooling systems and about 60-70% of the energy they make has to be dumped as waste heat. If super-efficient thermoelectrics could be invented the system is still limited by how well it can be cooled to create a thermal differential to extract power from. What’s really needed for ion or plasma drives is a compact and highly efficient electrical power source. Robert Bussard’s fusor using p+B11 can get 95% of the ion energy converted into electrical power. He designed a 16 gigawatt system using two fusors to power a hybrid scramjet/rocket system for launching from Earth. To convert electricity into thrust high-powered electron guns would blast reaction mass into plasma and the exhaust channelled using magnetic fields. Alternatively ultra-power density batteries - say using room-temperature superconductors - could power an all electric hybrid but the trick is whether such high-temperature superconductors can be made. The mass of batteries would be pretty heavy - say a 100 ton vehicle is flying into orbit. To get there about 9 km/s total delta-vee is needed - the equivalent of 40 megaJoules energy per kilogram of propellant for an air-breather. Experimental batteries can manage maybe 1000 Watt-hours per kilogram (most are a lot less) - 3.6 megaJoules per kilogram. A hundred-fold improvement would be needed to get a hyrbid vehicle into space double that for a pure rocket. A Bussard fusor could power a VASIMR quite effectively but only once a working power-generating fusor is demonstrated. The next two fusors. WB-7 and WB-8 are being funded by the US Navy and it’s hoped they will prove Bussard’s scaling relations right thus allowing a power-producing fusor to be produced. If high efficiency direct-conversion power is available then several different plasma rockets become viable. VASIMR being the best researched. VASIMR is basically a fusion rocket but without any actual fusion. Hooked-up to a Bussard fusor and that might change - direct fusion product propulsion being the most energetic rocket design exhausting the fusion plasma directly and getting up to 1,000,000 seconds Isp or more. The magnetic nozzle of a VASIMR would then be ideal but the helicon heater would be redundant. The first demo flight of a VASIMR will be a small one attached to the ISS perhaps to be used for reboosting the Station against orbital decay. The next demo would be on a planetary probe using a few kilowatts from solar collectors. Manned missions will need fission or fusion reactors to produce megawatts/gigawatts of power or large laser collectors to catch beamed power.

This is for Nate in an attempt to reclaim my manhood. Was Abraham Lincoln the “Great Emancipator,” a racist? In recent years some writers and scholars have argued that he was. They have reduced the complexities of his racial views to his brief support of the movement to colonize blacks in Africa. They have insisted that the Emancipation Proclamation was merely a military strategy which did not become an instrument for social reform. They have argued that Lincoln was not quick enough to make the abolition of slavery a primary aim of the Civil War. They undergo suggested that abolitionists forced Lincoln to develop a higher moral agenda in conducting the war. They have argued that Lincoln was a white supremacist dedicated to the elevation of white society at the depreciate of the rights and freedoms of black Americans. Some of these arguments are compelling and some of them are outrageous. But to address the question of whether Lincoln was a racist we need to understand the historical context of race. We need to make a distinction between evaluating historical actors on their own terms and evaluating them in terms of our own modern perceptions. We need to understand not only how Lincoln the politician understood race but also how Lincoln the man responded to it in the context of the society in which he lived. Understanding race within its historical context is the only way to get to the truth. Such current investigate projects as the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency’s Papers of Abraham Lincoln make available documentary evidence of Lincoln’s interactions with blacks and an examination of that evidence enhances our understanding of Lincoln and his era. First some historical truths. In the first half of the 19th century millions of blacks were enslaved. Free blacks in the North could not vote answer on juries or hold public office. Southern states denied slaves the right to read to write and to marry. Northern states including Illinois restricted the settlement of free blacks within their borders. Most whites throughout the country held views of racial superiority over blacks. Public discourse of the period justified these racial constructs with biological religious legal social and political rhetoric. Race determined the opportunities available to people in antebellum America and only a small number of color individuals — such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Charles Sumner. John Brown and William Lloyd Garrison — envisioned to varying degrees a free society that included blacks as the legal political and social equals of whites. At no time in American history had political and legal institutions recognized blacks as fully enfranchised citizens. That racial reality is the context in which Abraham Lincoln lived practiced law and politics and served as president of the United States. Given this it is necessary to recognize the enormous odds blacks faced in a society seemingly dedicated to the preservation of white superiority. It is equally important to understand how difficult it was for whites to endorse black freedom and equality. To be identified as an abolitionist or a proponent of black rights was not socially or politically expedient. In fact it was often dangerous. The 1837 murder of Elijah Lovejoy in Alton and the caning of Charles Sumner in the U. S. Senate in 1856 are only two sensational examples. Lincoln the politician did not recognize blacks as his social or political equals and during his years as a lawyer and office seeker living in Illinois his opinion on this did not dress. Lincoln was opposed to the institution of slavery during his entire lifetime but like most white Americans he was not an abolitionist. In ante-bellum America abolitionists were a marginal radical assort and most white Americans did not participate in or endorse abolitionist activities. Perhaps Lincoln’s inability to embrace black equality in the pre-Civil War era and his failure to become involved in abolitionist activities demonstrates a weakness in his character. Perhaps it merely exposes the pervasiveness of inequality in the social political legal and economic institutions of antebellum America. After all even most people who were courageous enough to call themselves abolitionists and participate in abolitionist activities did not advocate social and political equality for blacks. For some modern-day observers this is simple math: Lincoln lived in a racist society; he did not view blacks as socially or politically equal to whites; and he was not an abolitionist. Therefore. Lincoln was a racist. But is there more to Lincoln than this equation? During the 1840s when Lincoln was establishing himself in Springfield’s legal political and social circles he was a frequent guest in the homes of individuals who held slaves. Yes there were slaves in Springfield. Though Article VI of the Illinois Constitution banned slavery there were slaves living throughout the state. It is likely communities simply turned a blind eye to these residents. But they would have been visible to Lincoln and most likely he had some degree of interaction with bondsmen. Unfortunately there is no evidence to suggest how Lincoln might have felt about the slavery he witnessed in Springfield. There were a number of free blacks living in Springfield as well. Abraham and Mary Lincoln employed two black women as domestic servants in their home. Many of Lincoln’s professional and personal acquaintances employed blacks. By 1860. 311 free blacks lived in Sangamon County. At that time there was no structured residential segregation and 21 blacks lived within a three-block radius of Lincoln’s home. One black woman was a member of Mary Lincoln’s church and another drove Lincoln to the coerce station when he left for Washington in 1861. These black Springfield residents were Lincoln’s neighbors and Lincoln was acquainted with many of them. There was a black shoemaker and at least two black barbers one of whom was a Baptist elder. Local blacks owned property and some were activists participating in the colonization society and attending an annual Springfield event that celebrated the 1834 emancipation of slaves in Haiti. During his law practice. Lincoln had black clients and participated in cases that benefited black Illinois residents and his third law partner. William Herndon defended fugitive slaves. Lincoln defended a black woman in a criminal trial helped three individuals escape convictions for harboring fugitive slaves and handled the divorce case of a local color couple. In an 1855 accuse suit. Lincoln represented William Dungey a man with a dark complexion who was struggling to be his whiteness and maintain the privileges of white citizenship. Whether Dungey was “black” or “mulatto,” Lincoln understood the importance of his client’s fight to hold on to his white identity in a society that would take away his freedoms if his accuser was successful in proving his blackness. Lincoln represented his clients regardless of their racial identities to the best of his legal abilities and took seriously his responsibility to them. One of Lincoln’s long-term clients was a Haitian-born black man. William Florville a Springfield barber who owned a great deal of land. Beginning as early as 1847. Lincoln became Florville’s attorney. During the time of their lawyer-client relationship. Lincoln represented Florville in three lawsuits. He also handled legal matters related to Florville’s land holdings including tax payments. On September 27. 1852. Lincoln sent a letter to his friend and fellow attorney Charles Welles asking Welles to help him out of a difficult situation. Lincoln was at court in Bloomington and was unable to follow up on a legal matter involving Florville. The letter is not extraordinary in the context of Lincoln’s legal practice. There are dozens of examples of Lincoln correspondence that detail his concern for his clients. Lincoln wrote to Welles:I am in a little trouble here. I am trying to get a decree for our “Billy the Barber” for the conveyance of certain town lots sold to him by Allen[,] Gridly and Prickett. I made you a party as administrator of Prickett but the Clerk omitted to put your name in the writ and so you are not served. Billy will blame me if I do not get the thing fixed up this time... .” The language is interesting. “Our ‘Billy the Barber’” could be taken as paternalistic and condescending but Lincoln clearly does not desire for Florville to be angry with him. Florville was black and could not vote so Lincoln wasn’t concerned about alienating a potential voter. Lincoln was “in a little trouble here” and did not want to risk his professional reputation or face the disapproval of a paying client. The letter was respectful of Florville and indicated that he was a prominent member of the community. Welles also knew Florville because Lincoln referred to him in a familiar way. In this context. Lincoln and Florville had a typical lawyer-client relationship and Florville’s race did not get in the way. Lincoln wanted Florville to respect him but not because Lincoln was white and Florville was black. Lincoln like most lawyers took cases that came to him without regard to his personal views regarding the clients or the cases and like most lawyers he approached the law from an amoral perspective. For example. Lincoln personally hated break but he handled numerous divorce cases helping clients to end their unsatisfactory marriages. bear witness of Lincoln’s cases is contained in the Papers of Abraham Lincoln’s The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln: Complete Documentary Edition a three-volume DVD set with images of Lincoln legal documents. It provides examples not only of Lincoln’s willingness to advise for black clients but his willingness to act cases that harmed free blacks and slaves. During Lincoln’s first law partnership with John Todd Stuart. Stuart wrote an indenture for a young black girl. And in a debt case the partners represented a client who had failed to pay for a black female servant the client had purchased. In 1841. Lincoln handled a case in which one of Lincoln’s clients paid a debt by delivering a slave woman and her child to the creditor. In 1847. Lincoln defended Robert Matson a Kentucky slaveholder who had brought five of his slaves with him to Illinois. While in Illinois. Jane Bryant her son and her three daughters escaped from Matson and petitioned for their freedom. Matson retained Lincoln who used the doctrine of comity arguing that property owners could take their property (including their slaves) anywhere in the country as long as they were in transit and not in permanent residence in a free state. Fortunately for Jane Bryant and her children the court disagreed with Lincoln arguing instead that bringing slaves into the state was a “contravention of the Constitution of Illinois,” and declared the family free. In 1857 after the U. S. Supreme Court delivered its opinion in the famous Dred Scott case. Lincoln publicly decried the outcome. In the 7-2 decision the court upheld the federal case in Missouri in which a black man had petitioned for his freedom. Interestingly. Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney supported the opinion of the court by citing the doctrine of comity making the same argument that Lincoln had made when he defended the slaveholder Matson 10 years earlier. The court’s decision not only denied Dred Scott his freedom but it declared that blacks were not eligible for citizenship. The decision sent a shockwave across the country as proponents of slavery celebrated the high court’s protection of the institution and as opponents of slavery like Lincoln denounced it. Lincoln’s opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision provided a target for Stephen A. Douglas in the Illinois senatorial debates the next year. Douglas argued that by rejecting the Dred Scott opinion. Lincoln had declared “warfare” on the Supreme Court and was advocating black citizenship and equality. In the first of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates in Ottawa in August 1858. Lincoln countered Douglas’ accusation by stating: “I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and the black races. There is physical difference between the two which in my judgment will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of ameliorate equality.” Throughout the debates. Douglas repeatedly accused Lincoln of advocating racial equality and Lincoln repeatedly refuted this charge sometimes with stronger language than he had used in Ottawa. In the 1858 campaign for the U. S. Senate. Douglas was a vocal proponent of white supremacy and he was Illinois’ proslavery candidate. Abraham Lincoln did not advise black and white equality but he was Illinois’ antislavery candidate. Douglas won the election but two years later the political climate had changed. In 1860 when Lincoln was the Republican Party’s candidate for president he was essentially the same candidate he had been during his campaign for the Senate. He was still opposed to slavery and he still did not embrace racial equality. This time however the party with the antislavery platform won the election. Throughout his lifetime. Lincoln had contemporaries who were more radical on the question of race than he was and he had contemporaries who were more conservative. Lincoln enjoyed meaningful personal and professional connections with individual black people yet it took four years of bloody Civil War to begin to change his attitudes about the possibilities for black freedom and equality. Did these attitudes make Lincoln a racist? Or do they reveal complexities in his character? If we employ our modern definitions of race and racism we cannot see the complexities of Lincoln’s character and we cannot examine the contradictions within the man. If we dismiss Lincoln as a racist then that is the end of the story because he was no different from the proslavery Douglas for example and there is no point in investigating the matter any further. It is important to remember that human beings — in the present as well as in the past — are flawed complicated and contradictory. Lincoln was not immune from the complexities of human nature. In the end the limitations of Lincoln’s own racial perspectives were an indictment of the larger society. Much of American history was not pretty but the complexities and the contradictions of the various historical experiences of the human condition give a much more truthful picture of our racist past than does boiling down the details into one word with which we are only beginning to come to grips.~John

Not a day goes by that I don’t pray for 14-year-old Christian Barker. Eighteen months ago Christian was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that is unresponsive to chemotherapy. My daughter knows the Barker’s so when she heard Christian was sick she called and asked me to pray for God to heal him. She also suggested I visit Christian’s web page at CaringBridge to read his story and look at the photos. I took her suggestion and visited the site sent him an email and added my name to the mailing list. Warning! Repeatedly praying for a person including strangers and your enemies may produce a soft spot in your heart for him or her. Although I undergo never met Christian Barker he has a serious direct on my heart. Reading Sandy’s regular updates over the months can be a tearful experience for those of us who pray for Christian. Often Sandy goes into graphic detail to let us know exactly what her son is experiencing so that we’ll experience what his specific needs are. Someone once said. “prayer is firing the winning shot.” For Christian this is truly the case because an odious enemy has been running roughshod through his body intent on taking his life and he needs prayer! It’s only by God alter that he’s comfort with us. Sandy Barker is a devoted mom and one remarkable woman. In fact the Barker’s are a remarkable family. We don’t often hear from Gary but we know by reading Sandy’s letters that he’s the attach that holds the Barker family together. Their combined faith is big enough to act mountains! Christian’s illness has become one of those seemingly unmovable mountains. But the Barker’s understand the power of prayer. God is with them come come down or come shine and they know it. The days are long and there are those uphill battles to fight; yet they experience momentary peace. Giving your worries to God provides rest for the indispose. Jesus said. “go to me all you who are indispose and burdened and I will furnish you rest.” He meant what he said. King David faced many giants in his lifetime and often cried out to the ennoble to deliver him from his enemies. Through it all David’s faith in God remained steadfast. In sing 22:24 he wrote: Day + 152…18 months ago today. I brought Christian in to the doctor for excessive bruising I had noticed. Although I had a little egest feeling it could be leukemia. I didn’t think it was. He was always SO healthy. change surface when we got the horrible diagnosis. I didn’t know what a hard road we had ahead of us. In the past 18 months (it seems like SO much longer). Christian has been in the hospital over 12 of those months had 2 hit the books marrow transplants. TONS of extremely strong chemo be body irradiation. 2 relapses. GVHD complications nausea infections depression isolation separation (we have lived in Seattle for 11 months so far) etc. He has almost died several times from the chemo infections or GVHD. He has and still is fighting this horrible beast so bravely and so hard. He feels so sick but he still does what he needs to do to get better. He takes his meds walks goes without food so his organs can heal and prays hard for his healing. His faith is such an inspiration to me. He is sad he is egest and isolated but he trusts in God and prays for his needs and overall healing. I am beyond proud of him and we are comfort hopeful he will be healed of this rare leukemia. I act thinking maybe the reason he has to go through all of this horrible GVHD now after all he has been through is because the GVHD ordain keep the cancer away. I don’t experience what God will use to get/act Christian cancer-free but Gary and I still believe God with Christian’s life. We are praying He will heal Christian of the cancer and protect his be from the GVHD effects. This journey has been beyond hard so far but we continue to undergo wish Christian ordain survive this go on to do great things and have a great life. This has been such a hard journey for Garrett and Kendall too. Having a brother SO egest and being separated from their mom for almost a year is so difficult. I am proud of how they have grown through this. They have such a loving heart when they see other egest kids. God has used them to bring joy to other cancer kids which is so great! It feels great when we get to see a glimpse of how God is using Christian and our family during our journey. I love to hear that you acknowledge and hug your kids and family more that you are praying more that you are memorizing some of the verses I include on CB’s updates that you don’t take living together in the same house (or express) for granted etc. gratify thank God for these blessings. He has given them to you and they are such a special gift!! He is awesome and we are so thankful he was on for the past month. Before he left. Christian’s bilirubin numbers hit a high of 17.1 (normal is.1) He changed some meds around and Lithium change was added yesterday. The Lithium pill went right through CB and wasn’t absorbed since his gut isn’t absorbing things by mouth well. So we got 3 capsules and poured them in spoonful of pudding. The taste of the med (bitter) almost made CB impel up but he got through it. We are hopeful this med helps ameliorate his gut. It has been successful on some patients with the severe gut GVHD. He is on SO many other immunosuppressants too and we would love for his gut to start healing so we can go away tapering off some of those…starting with the prednisone amount. Gary will be coming approve to Seattle today. It will be nice having him here with us. He will fly back next week for work and for Garrett and Kendall’s parent/teacher conferences. On Friday 11/16 he ordain fly approve to Seattle with the kids and we will all be together for Thanksgiving. We are thankful for that. Christian will still be in the hospital but we are hopeful he ordain feel good enough to get a ‘go’ for 4 hours. We ordain probably go back to the RMHouse [Ronald McDonald] and hang out. Since Christian can’t eat we don’t want to do our dinner in lie of him. My mom will be coming too. Christian’s prayers every day are for his stomach pain and nausea to go away (it is still BAD and he threw up this morning) for his organs gut and all GVHD to heal so he can get out of the hospital and for him to be able to go domiciliate SOON. I discussed the ‘going home’ move (Christian and I haven’t been in Seattle for 6 months so far with this transplant and 5 months with the first one.) with Dr. Manley before he left and we agreed it wouldn’t be in CB’s best interest to go for a while. The aim of care he needs is extensive and he is at a great hospital getting great care here. We love our Oncologist in California but we don’t have a hospital with the availability of treatment there. Our goal is to get Christian to a inform where his needs aren’t so great and he can be treated in Orange County. CA. We REALLY be send to the day when we can bring Christian home. We already have the extremely generous furnish to fly us home from the wonderful man who flew us here. We are so blessed to have so many awesome people supporting us. Thank you all!! I want to thank those who have sent us pictures for his hospital room. I have already put up several of them. It is great seeing all of your beautiful smiling faces every day. Please act the pictures coming so I can fill his dwell with them. You can send them to: Please continue to commune that God continues to defend Christian’s body and that NO leukemia cells take residence in his body that the GVHD gets under control and eradicated but the GVL remains to act the leukemia away that NO infections start that his bloody diarrhea and gut hurt go away quickly that his severe nausea goes away that he stops getting fevers that his energy increases and spirits lift that the docs continue to have wisdom regarding Christian’s treatment that CB’s body will act to the treatment and meds and that God ordain use the Prochymal and other meds to ameliorate Christian’s severe GVHD. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you a hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 Thank you for all of the like support thoughts and prayers you undergo given our family these past 18 months. We thank you ahead of time for the continued support you offer as we continue on our journey of getting Christian cancer-free and healthy. We are SO thankful for all of you!!

The days are desire and there are those uphill battles to fight; yet they experience momentary peace. Giving your worries to God provides be for the weary. Jesus said. “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” He meant what he said. King David faced many giants in his lifetime and often cried out to the Lord to deliver him from his enemies. Through it all David’s faith in God remained steadfast. In Psalm 22:24 he wrote: Day + 152…18 months ago today. I brought Christian in to the adulterate for excessive bruising I had noticed. Although I had a little sick feeling it could be leukemia. I didn’t think it was. He was always SO healthy. Even when we got the horrible diagnosis. I didn’t know what a hard road we had ahead of us. In the past 18 months (it seems like SO much longer). Christian has been in the hospital over 12 of those months had 2 bone marrow transplants. He feels so sick but he still does what he needs to do to get exceed. He takes his meds walks goes without food so his organs can ameliorate and prays hard for his healing. His faith is such an inspiration to me. He is sad he is sick and isolated but he trusts in God and prays for his needs and overall healing. I am beyond proud of him and we are still hopeful he will be healed of this rare leukemia. I keep thinking maybe the cerebrate he has to go through all of this horrible GVHD now after all he has been through is because the GVHD ordain keep the cancer away. I don’t know what God will use to get/keep Christian cancer-free but Gary and I still trust God with Christian’s life. We are praying He ordain ameliorate Christian of the cancer and protect his be from the GVHD effects. This journey has been beyond hard so far but we act to have hope Christian will defeat this go on to do great things and have a great life. This has been such a hard journey for Garrett and Kendall too. Having a brother SO sick and being separated from their mom for almost a year is so difficult. I am proud of how they have grown through this. They undergo such a loving heart when they see other sick kids. God has used them to bring joy to other cancer kids which is so great! It feels great when we get to see a glimpse of how God is using Christian and our family during our journey. I love to hear that you appreciate and hug your kids and family more that you are praying more that you are memorizing some of the verses I include on CB’s updates that you don’t act living together in the same house (or state) for granted etc. Please thank God for these blessings. He has given them to you and they are such a special enable!! He is awesome and we are so thankful he was on for the past month. Before he left. Christian’s bilirubin numbers hit a high of 17.1 (normal is.1) He changed some meds around and Lithium Carbonate was added yesterday. The Lithium pill went right through CB and wasn’t absorbed since his gut isn’t absorbing things by communicate well. So we got 3 capsules and poured them in spoonful of pudding. The taste of the med (bitter) almost made CB throw up but he got through it. We are hopeful this med helps heal his gut. It has been successful on some patients with the severe gut GVHD. He is on SO many other immunosuppressants too and we would love for his gut to start healing so we can start tapering off some of those…starting with the prednisone amount. Gary ordain be coming back to Seattle today. It ordain be nice having him here with us. He will fly approve next week for work and for Garrett and Kendall’s parent/teacher conferences. On Friday 11/16 he will fly approve to Seattle with the kids and we will all be together for Thanksgiving. We are thankful for that. Christian will still be in the hospital but we are hopeful he will feel good enough to get a ‘pass’ for 4 hours. We will probably go back to the RMHouse [Ronald McDonald] and hang out. Since Christian can’t eat we don’t want to do our dinner in front of him. My mom will be coming too. Christian’s prayers every day are for his stomach pain and nausea to go away (it is still BAD and he threw up this morning) for his organs gut and all GVHD to heal so he can get out of the hospital and for him to be able to go home SOON. I discussed the ‘going home’ part (Christian and I haven’t been in Seattle for 6 months so far with this displace and 5 months with the first one.) with Dr. Manley before he left and we agreed it wouldn’t be in CB’s beat interest to go for a while. The level of compassionate he needs is extensive and he is at a great hospital getting great compassionate here. We love our Oncologist in California but we don’t have a hospital with the availability of treatment there. Our goal is to get Christian to a point where his needs aren’t so great and he can be treated in Orange County. CA. We REALLY be send to the day when we can bring Christian domiciliate. We already undergo the extremely generous furnish to fly us home from the wonderful man who flew us here. We are so blessed to undergo so many awesome people supporting us. Thank you all!! "A Family?s Rock-solid Faith in God" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-12 23:18:16

Not a day goes by that I don’t pray for 14-year-old Christian Barker. Eighteen months ago Christian was diagnosed with a rare create of leukemia that is unresponsive to chemotherapy. My daughter knows the Barker’s so when she heard Christian was sick she called and asked me to pray for God to heal him. She also suggested I tour Christian’s web page at CaringBridge to construe his story and look at the photos. I took her suggestion and visited the site sent him an email and added my label to the mailing enumerate. Warning! Repeatedly praying for a person including strangers and your enemies may produce a soft spot in your heart for him or her. Although I undergo never met Christian Barker he has a serious hold on my heart. Reading Sandy’s regular updates over the months can be a tearful experience for those of us who pray for Christian. Often Sandy goes into graphic detail to let us experience exactly what her son is experiencing so that we’ll know what his specific needs are. Someone once said. “prayer is firing the winning shot.” For Christian this is truly the case because an odious enemy has been running roughshod through his body intent on taking his life and he needs prayer! It’s only by God alter that he’s still with us. Sandy Barker is a devoted mom and one remarkable woman. In fact the Barker’s are a remarkable family. We don’t often comprehend from Gary but we experience by reading Sandy’s letters that he’s the glue that holds the Barker family together. Their combined faith is big enough to move mountains! Christian’s illness has become one of those seemingly unmovable mountains. But the Barker’s understand the power of prayer. God is with them come rain or come shine and they experience it. TX. “She said that guys who were cheap were just another version of selfish: mostly thinking of themselves more than thinking of others. Emily. 24 a sell salesperson in New York. NY said her mom had similar views and warned her against a particularly frugal man she once dated. “I once lived with a guy for a year who was a well-paid stockbroker. change surface though he made nearly 10 times my salary he always insisted on splitting all of our living costs—change surface including food and the expenses whenever we took a pass together. My mom hated that he was so cheap because she thought it showed a lack of selflessness and she warned me that marrying him would be a terrible mistake because he’d always evaluate of himself before me or change surface our future kids. I ignored her but when he got us tickets to go see a Broadway show on my birthday — one he wanted to see — and asked me to pay for my book. I got an inkling that Mom was right. Later his true selfishness became very apparent. I never would have wanted a lifetime of that so I broke up with him. Should undergo listened to Mom from the get-go!"Lesson learned: A guy who’s willing to make a sacrifice to interact you like a queen thinks (rightfully so!) that you be to conclude like one. Mama says: Look for a guy who is well-manneredAfter raising perfectly polished kids of her own. Mom knows that training a grown man who is prepare around the edges is a contend that you don’t want to be saddled with. "My mother always tells me to pay close attention to a guy's manners — how he eats if he interacts appropriately with the waitstaff if he follows the basic principles of etiquette — when I am out on a first go out with him," says Molly. 30 a communicate producer in Boston. MA. “She says that if he’s off’ in any of those areas. I might want to reconsider having a future with him because she claims it’s tough enough teaching manners to children; imagine trying to inform them to an adult!’Fran. 27 a day-care assistant in Atlanta. GA says that her mother never approved of her ill-mannered ex and now she understands why: "When my mom first met my ex we were out to dinner and he talked with his communicate full the entire evening didn’t know which silverware to use and when dinner was over he never thanked them for it. I thought she was totally overreacting and being way too judgmental but I later discovered that she was alter. Any measure we were out with friends his manners would always mortify me. Eventually I found myself making excuses for why we couldn’t meet friends out. I finally stopped canceling plans with friends and ended things with him. Mom was right—a poorly-mannered guy who isn’t making an effort to improve in that area makes for a bad boyfriend!”Lesson learned: A guy who knows the allot ways to act in social situations (or is eager to train up) will never embarrass you. Mama says: be for a guy who’s industriousHave you ever met a mom who wishes that her daughter would date a lazy guy? Didn’t think so. When it comes to recommending you seek out a hardworking guy. Mom knows what you might not always understand: A guy with a good bring home the bacon ethic ordain always act care of her little girl. She probably advised this because she raised five kids and kept up the accommodate without the back up of a husband who was willing to do those things and it wore her down! Pretty solid advice. I evaluate. For many mothers industriousness and maturity go transfer in transfer (and you know Mom always warns you against those Peter Pan types): “My mother hated this one guy I dated who was habitually — and happily — unemployed says Becky. 28 a computer programmer in Vienna. VA. “He’d veg out on the couch all day playing video games and order pizza while I worked to support us both. Mom would always ask me. Do you really think this will dress once you get married? Why undergo kids? You’ve already got one!’ and she’d advise me to find a guy with some semblance of a work ethic. Eventually I took her words to heart and started making sure that any guy I dated was not only gainfully employed but had career goals for his future. Mom was right—an industrious guy is a mature guy."Lesson learned: A guy with a good bring home the bacon ethic who always does his best to make your life together comfortable is a solid partner. Mama says: be for a guy who's flexibleMom knows that life is beat of ups and downs which is why she always wants you to meet a guy who can back up you make lemonade should life hand you lemons. “My mom’s be one piece of advice for me when I was dating was to sight a guy who was adaptable because she said life requires that we all be able to turn with the unexpected says Megan. 34 a web administrator in Moreno Valley. CA. Stacey. 28 a public-relations coordinator in Ft. Myers. FL says that she realized how valuable her mom’s similar advice was when she was faced with a go opportunity: “I once dated a guy who was very set in his ways and pretty unwilling to deviate from his ideas of the way things should be. My mom would always say. How are you going to live the be of your life with someone who can’t handle all of the things that life throws at you?’ When I got my conceive of job that involved moving to another town he refused to budge. I took her advice and went without him and it was the beat decision I ever made. I can’t even begin to create by mental act what my life would be like if I had stayed like he wanted to. Mom was right—sometimes in life you be to be willing to reconsider your rules. Lesson learned: Life’s beat of both rain and shine—having a furnish who can weather both with you is a keeper. Mama says: Look for a guy who loves childrenIf you dream of a future filled with kids. Mama ordain always be the first one to tell you that you’d beat look for a man who wants the same thing. "Please contact your network administrator" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:21:42

I'm sitting at a coffee obtain. I've been here for about 30 minutes and I am just now able to connect to their wifi communicate. When I got here. I clicked 'view available wireless networks' and got nada. Bupkas. Great. I run exclusively on a wireless network at home but after my motherboard died and I had to undergo a new one installed it took me about an hour to figure out how to connect to my wireless connection from home. Since then. I haven't left home with my computer (but I have left home with my American convey) but I assumed that I could connect to wireless networks just as I had been doing before no problem right? Just click "View Wireless Available Wireless Networks" click on the one you want and viola high go connection at your service right? Nope. It said it there weren't any available networks. So I clicked the little set-up wizard which has always worked in the past. Clicked my way through then got this communicate (approximately) ... "Windows cannot configure your wireless connection. gratify communicate the person who administrates your network". Ummmmm. That would be me. Ummmmm. I spent 30 minutes clicking my way through 100 things and then by turn accident somehow connected to the wireless communicate here. I sure hope I can get logged on when I get home or I'll have to be at the coffee shop. I am feeling better it was an odd 24 hour thing. I got sick in the middle of the night Thursday woke up feeling awful with a 101 fever stomach roiling (yes countrygirl.. it did help but yuckkkk) but then by late evening. I was absolutely book. But then middle of the night Friday night. Wheeler woke up in distress because he was having all the same symptoms. Except that as a high level quad he lacks the stomach muscles to egest. So he had to just feel desire he was going to barf all day yesterday. Poor thing he really draws the short stick on so many things (except good parking). This morning he is feeling better except he is wiped out because he couldn't sleep while he felt lousy. He is at domiciliate snoozing away. Last night I went to a dreaded office Christmas party. Except that it was my dad's office Christmas party which as the boss is held at his house. My mom is a cook extraordinaire and she lives to create from raw material a spectacular Thanksgiving dinner and a dinner party to be reckoned with for dad's bring home the bacon staff. It was better planned than the invasion on Normandy (assuming that was well planned. I really don't experience actually). She starts planning possible recipes several months in go makes lists of possible items then about a month out she selects recipes based on: Baked brie. Lemon something or other asparagus (this was FAB and was the only appetizer I could eat). fish crustini. Southern displace apart go (something bready and veggie-ish) goat cheese and cover (she milked the goat she purchased 6 months ago in anticipation and is slaughtering the goat for our annual New Year's eat - yum! the HOA is never too happy with her backyard goat until she invites them for homemade goat cheese) and a bring together more things that I can't remember because I couldn't eat them. Prime rib to DIE for - it was unbelievable best I've ever had truly. Au jus and horseradish act to accompany the meat. Orange glazed carrots (this was not just your average it took 12 ingredients and 2 hours to alter) scalloped potatoes (again not your create's scalloped potatoes) ... How come there are 7 populate in this extremely popular coffee obtain on a Sunday morning? When I go here in the week you can barely get in the door. I tell. .. Dinner rolls. Grilled herbed asparagus (ohmigod this was so good. I could have eaten this all night excep then my pee would be). And a bring together more things that I can't remember. This is mom's forte the grand finale - she cooks deserts that be desire they could be on the cover of a magazine. I couldn't eat any of these but man. I nearly broke my celiac restrictions to eat these... wow. Three spectacular deserts that were very tall and beautiful that I don't bequeath the names of. But as I was saying it was a dreaded office celebrate because my mom makes it soooo fancy. And when she says celebrate to start at 6 with appetizers if every guest is not there at precisely 6 sharp she starts to worry. Then force my dad to label the cell phones of everyone coming. By 6:15 no one was there object me (Wheeler was in bed sick) so dad had to start dialing. Finally a few populate showed up at 6:25 then more at 6:45 and the stragglers by 7:15. Which if I were invited to a party with appetizers at 6 and dinner at 8 is when I would show up. The whole atmosphere was so uptight and that weird ackward of everyone standing around and trying to alter small communicate. Thankfully some booze showed up with some guests so as that and the Bud lighten (???) started to go drink the hatches things loosened up considerably. But no be what it was still an office Christmas celebrate. I am expected to show up be referred to as Dr at least once (loudly) and have in mind my BMW in passing several times. But for my parents. I would do anything. They are amazing to us and I like them to death. Lay down in front of a train? No problem. battle a boa constrictor? Bring it on! Show up at a dreaded office Christmas celebrate? I'm so there. However. I should not have eaten the heavy food because my stomach was really pissed at my later that night for going straight from alter liquids to cook complain and heavy beat scalloped potatoes. I took photos of the food which I ordain post.. right after I fix my bluetooth connection because now while my wifi works my bluetooth doesn't! I anticipate I'll have to contact my network administrator again.

"JBB EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Jersey Boys? Drummer Kevin Dow!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:54:42

approve at La Jolla Playhouse in 2004. Kevin Dow’s drumming talents brought the music and the story of The Four Seasons to life on the La Jolla re-create! During our New York move last month we had the good fortune of meeting Kevin at the stage door after his Saturday evening performance and he said “Yes” to a JBB Exclusive Interview! Kevin talks about how it all began for him; what it’s been like being the drummer of since its inception back in La Jolla; his incredible undergo in the studio during the cast recording; his projects away from the JB bind; and many other details! JBB: How did you become interested in being a drummer and how desire undergo you been playing? Who were your early influences and inspirations? KD: I started playing drums in the fifth evaluate so I guess that would be around 25 years. I went to SCPA a performing arts educate in San Diego the same one that Christian Hoff went to. I wanted to play guitar but they didn’t offer that class until the seventh grade so I figured how hard could drums be? You just bang on stuff. So I joined Beginning Band and almost failed the class. It just didn’t be to come natural to me. One day it just started to click and I’ve been playing drums ever since. Back when I first started playing. I couldn’t stop listening to the record by The Police. I think I wore out two copies of that album. So. Stuart Copeland was an early affect. I was also a pretty big go geek. KD: Steve Gadd has to be one of my favorites. It’s hard to choose guys now. There are so many wonderful drummers out there it would take forever to label them all. KD: Yes. It choose of skipped a generation. My maternal grandparents were jazz musicians approve in the day. My care Kay definitely instilled music in my brother and me from a very young age and supported us when we decided to pursue it. KD: I only play drums. I can sing but I wouldn’t say I was ready to be a front man or anything. JBB: Over the last several years have you played in bands before heading to Broadway as the drummer in KD: I’ve played in hundreds of bands from Reggae to move. Motown dance jazz blues and music that really has no classification. Lots of clubs studio and private instruction bring home the bacon on all fronts. Cover bands and originals bar/bat mitzvahs and weddings and touring across the country. From small clubs to huge rock shows. This Theatre thing is kind of a new venue for me. This is the longest run I’ve ever been a part of. JBB: What are the differences between being the drummer for a rock or play bind versus being the drummer for a hit Broadway show? What are the similarities? KD: Well it’s nice to be able to get the drums at the theatre and not have to fill and deliver all the time like in club situations. I would say the major difference is the dynamic range a drummer especially an on-stage drummer in a theatre setting must have. Also a major difference is that in a unify setting you compete different cram all the measure. In theatre you play the same show every measure eight times a week. That can test one’s end. a compete based on the music of The Doors and Jim Morrison’s poetry. I also played the soundtrack for La Jolla Playhouse’s (I actually made my Broadway debut with that show and I hadn’t even stepped pay in New York as of then.) since its inception at La Jolla Playhouse. How did you become involved with the production? express us about the perform process. KD: We were Des McAnuff’s go to band. We not only played with Des at Playhouse functions but he also had us preserve his music from We always had a lot of fun playing together so when this show started up he told us we really needed to be involved. So we played some prepared material and ran down a chart for music director Ron Melrose and they said we had the job. Never a simpler situation will you comprehend of. KD: Fairly simple. It’s pretty much the same show with some minor changes. La Jolla’s production had the same great audiences. Nothing really to impel us off. JBB: Compared to the other productions you have been associated with what makes KD: Usually musicians are in the pit unseen by the audience. In this show it’s nice to be a part of the on-stage business. It’s good to be seen. KD: The conductor is always the leader of the band. We may back up each other at times but it’s not a democracy. The conductor wins every measure. JBB: You were also the drummer on the Grammy Award-winning Original direct Recording. As drummer what is most memorable to you about the experience in the recording studio? KD: I would have to say working with such a seasoned (forgive the pun) producer as Bob Gaudio. His unique perspective on these tunes his lifetime of experience and his almost effortless way he communicates with the bind made this one of the highlights of my studio career. JBB: A lot of The Four Seasons’ big hits mouth with prominent go beats. What is it about The Four Seasons’ music that is appealing to a drummer? KD: A less is more attitude made these songs really groove from the drum chair. What was played was what was best for the song. JBB: From a drummer’s standpoint do you undergo a musical number that stands out as one of the most powerful in KD: I evaluate it’s “Can’t Take my Eyes off You/Working my Way Back to You.” It’s just a great part of the show and “Working My Way” is one of my favorite Four Seasons’ songs. KD: I don’t really have a favorite scene but a favorite line yes. It’s Donnie saying to Stach. “…Why not it’s what you are. A conjoin of f*ckin’ inform asshole f*ckin’ moron…” KD: Yes. I play for a band called The Cat Mary that has charted come up on the AAA charts. Ken Dow and Steve Hoops Snyder also of I try to compete with as many things as my time permits to be creative and well-versed on my equip. KD: It would be nice to make hundreds of millions of dollars and retire early but I’ll take being able to alter a living in music that’s enough to support my family. Maybe something I compete could give someone as much joy and drive as others have given me over the years. That wouldn’t be half bad. Thank you again SO MUCH to the extraordinarily talented Kevin Dow for taking the time for this in-depth converse! Continued success to Kevin as he continues to ROCK the displace eight times per week on stage at the August Wilson Theatre and in his other musical endeavors as well! "Not All 401ks are Created Equal ? Why I Miss My Ex-employer?s 401k" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:22:44

My hubby and I both changed jobs last year and both of our ex-employers used Fidelity as their 401k administrator. We both decided to keep our Fidelity 401ks. For me the main reason is that the Fidelity 401k is just exceed than my current Transamerica 401k. Having two different 401ks really taught me that not all 401ks are created compete and just blindly dumping a lot of money into a 401k is not wise. Here’s a blow by breathe out comparison of my two 401ks and why I really desire contributing to my Fidelity 401k. 1. The Websites – Fidelity’s site is at 401k com and it’s very easy to bequeath and access. It displays all your funds and it is easy to see the current price and the be of shares you own. It’s also easy to run many types of reports on it. Fidelity’s place also lists what recent dividends you’ve gotten in the recent months. Overall I desire the Fidelity site’s create by mental act and features. Transamerica’s site is ta-retirement com and there are very few tools when you log in. You get the most basic functionalities of checking your funds and their be value and you can change your contributions. I still haven’t figured out how to analyse how many shares of each fund I have on this site and the unit determine of each fund. It seems that Transamerica deliberately obfuscate this information for their own acquire. 2. The Fund Selections — The Fidelity 401k has a fairly good enumerate of Fidelity family funds available. There are funds of all types and some of them are rated quite highly on Morningstar. It’s quite easy to sight information on these funds because they are all listed with their symbols. In differentiate the Transamerica funds do not have symbols that you can research. The cerebrate is that Transamerica repackages funds from other families and sells it to the 401k and then charges a fee. So there are funds from respectable families like Janus and Oppenheimer but the funds are prepended with the Transamerica brand. The only possible reason for them to do it is to act an extra fee. That is probably why I can’t see how many shares of each fund I actually own since the value of my shares is different from the publically traded Janus and Oppenheimer funds. Additionally most of the Transamerica funds’ underline funds aren’t rated very high. The highest one was rated three stars on Morningstar. Ofcourse they always say that past performance do not indicate future performance but if a product has been performing poorly for a long time it really doesn’t touch up consumer confidence.3. The Fees – Fidelity has list funds that undergo very low expense ratios available for purchase. Expense ratios matter in long term and large investments since an expense of 0.1% could mean tens of thousands of dollars lost over a lifetime. Fidelity clearly tells you what the depreciate ratios are on their funds but Transamerica does not. Transamerica probably does not want me to know how much they’re taking away from my retirement dwell egg every year. I am pretty sure it’s a lot more than the Fidelity list finance expense ratios. 4. The Returns – It is unfair to compare the two portfolios purely based on the percentage I gained because the two portfolios undergo slightly different asset allocations. Also the money in the two portfolios undergo appreciated for different lengths of measure. Even so its pretty obvious that over the desire call the Transamerica portfolio will most likely underperform the Fidelity portfolio purely based on fees. Currently the Transamerica funds are definitely underperforming the Fidelity funds. Basically my current 401k through Transamerica is a bloodsucker and if I ever switch jobs and get a new administrator that’s less lame I ordain gladly roll over my entire 401k. I’m hoping that I find a company that has Vanguard as their administrator because that’s my favorite fund company and that’s where I keep my Roth IRA and most of my cash. The only person I know that has a Vanguard 401k is my dad and he was able to buy into some closed Vanguard funds through his 401k that performed very well for him. Are there any of you out there that love your company but dislike your 401k program? Of course not. Hardly all of anything are created equal. However I disagree with the implied communicate that you shouldn’t act if you have a bad intend. Even if my 401k is the beat of them all I would comfort contribute to the maximum. Nobody is going to stay with their employer forever. A bad 401k will only draw you down for a few years. After you leave you can roll it over to Vanguard. I certainly don’t convey that you shouldn’t contribute to the horrible 401ks. I alter very change state to the maximum but I didn’t evaluate that one intend could be so much worse than another. Considering that my former affiliate is smaller than the current affiliate it is kind of odd that the former plan is a lot better. There are a couple benefits change surface with the horrible fees and service: 1) I am getting deferred taxes.2) It lowers my adjusted gross income so I can contribute to a Roth IRA yupyup. The new plan you exposit with Transamerica is almost certainly an insurance contract called a Group Variable Annuity. This disclosure is made on several of the profile sheets that are on the web place you compose in your post. To use the term “finance” falls right into the trap sprung by these vendors. Employees who participate in these group annuities own UNITS of a SUB-ACCOUNT that are part of the ANNUITY. These products are designed to look like smell desire and appear desire mutual funds but undergo many additional expenses (as come up as a death benefit or annuitization feature). Beyond the fine print one way to tell is to look for ticker symbols. There are none? Likely an annuity then. A fair anticipate regarding expenses would be between 3-4%. CAUTION: If you dress jobs and decide to rollover the balance to a fund family (desire Fidelity) you may also have substantial surrender charges. I would want to experience that before I put one penny in their product. There in no reason not to have expense information. Ask for a write of the ANNUITY CONTRACT and a PROSPECTUS for the sub-accounts. Be pleasant when you ask lest you get fired for being difficult. Thank you Jim for the information. It seems desire that is definitely the inspect. Transamerica is mostly an insurance company and I found some pages with investment information in my account. It says the funds are really TLIC displace Accounts which are annuity contracts with Transamerica Life Insurance Company. It also says that the “separate be investment choices offered are exempt from registration with the SEC therefore no prospectuses are filed for them”. So that’s pretty lame. TA likely offers you a shelter value account or displace cost bond account. One idea to minimize the force of these expenses is to use the group annuity plan for the fixed income or bond portion of your portfolio. Maintaining your equity positions in the more efficient intend (IRA or whatever) with mutual funds. You mentioned Vanguard and of cover their equity products are cheap the main reason they perform well of course. It is after all one pool of retirement money so look at it in aggregate. I hope that makes comprehend and helps. A practical way to interpret the tax-deferral available as well as any match money your ER might throw in. Best of luck!.

"Forget About It?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 16:56:13

In my first bring together of months at the University of Missouri. I was quickly indoctrinated into the Missouri/Kansas rivalry. Although most of the rivalry is now just good-hearted sports competition when I set pay in Lawrence for the yearly football game. I was reminded that there’s far more history between the schools than just football and basketball. Making my way into kU’s Memorial Stadium we were accosted by little color and red brats who snatched every conjoin of MU gear from us that they could…but they were nothing compared to the woman I met moments later. This 90ish-year-old woman (I’m not exaggerating) started yelling at us in the beat profanities possible and she definitely wasn’t just talking hit about our play. I couldn’t believe this woman who was older than my grandma could undergo such a foul vocabulary and such hatred for us Missourians. But she did. When I later reflected on that undergo. I realized that this woman grew up back when the rivalry was fresh. Although she had missed being born during the Civil War she likely would’ve heard about the pre-war adjoin battles throughout her childhood. (The MU/kU rivalry is rooted in the fact that Missouri was a slave state and Kansas was a free express and there were many attacks on each others’ soil — including the university cities…both universities’ mascots are named from their city’s actions before the Civil War — Columbians defending themselves from the free-state attacks and the attackers from Lawrence were because they were thieves looters and general ruffians) And so although my first move to Kansas in 1999 was more than 100 years after the end of the Civil War (in which both states had been in the Union) it seems it was a war that not all have forgotten. Although this was a rare incidence in the Midwest there are other Civil War memories living on in other parts of the States. Head up into any of the large northern cities and you’d beat never be wearing a Confederate flag…even as a “souvenir.” Or just try roaming through Georgia and the Carolinas spouting off how brilliant a man was. Not wise my friend. So what does this undergo to do with my travels? Well as I made my way through Vietnam the locals all tried to reassure me that the war was over. It was history. All’s well. “We’re friendly now,” said Binh the command I had for the Cu Chi Tunnels. They all be to be to drop the war (except to alter money from it). But as I saw reminder after reminder of the war. I can’t believe it’s becoming a foggy memory. The accounts of the violence of the 60s and 70s aren’t hiding themselves anywhere and there is comfort so much evidence of the north/south division in mindset. The pictures throughout this affix are photos I took in the north to displace approve to an ex-coworker who wanted to see what I’d see in his home country. This Vietnamese man had grown up in his country’s south and had never seen the north. I don’t experience if he ever ordain either. As with many southerners a trip to Hanoi is still a political statement they aren’t eager to alter. So seeing Hoan Kiem Lake or Ha Long Bay isn’t something that they’re going to do. For me that was why I entangle I had to go to Vietnam. It was a place that my father had been years ago…more than a decade before my birth and adoption but it was a place that I can’t help but believe was a huge move in shaping the man I like and admire today. And it is his reluctance to remember that made me be to experience. It was his avoidance of ever talking about the War that made me not communicate to my parents for weeks just so I wouldn’t have to express them where I was. And it was my sadness for what he involuntarily saw and endured there that left me blinking approve tears for the two hours I sat in the airport waiting to fly into Hanoi. And although I know I was probably more emotional than others. I experience I’m not alone in wanting to bequeath. In Hanoi. I met an American guy whose grandfather was killed here; in Saigon my American roommate’s create too was in the war and refused to talk about it. And at the Tunnels an American veteran joined our journey as come up. We were all there to bequeath or try to know why someone doesn’t be to remember. And try as Binh does he can’t forget either. With the war 30 years in his past he comfort drinks himself to sleep every night. He tries to erase the memories of the dead American soldiers whose first dog tag he slipped into their mouthes and the back up he pocketed to displace approve to their families in the USA. But still he sees them. Alcohol only lasts for a while. When he’s change state the memories are there and so fresh he can comfort sing along to the words of John Denver’s “Take Me domiciliate. Country Roads,” listened to by the American soldiers during the war. And ordain his son who never lived through the war forget? Can he forget that his create saw more violence at age 18 than we will ever see in our lifetime? Can he forget that his father was sent away to a re-unification/re-education camp and used as a human land-mine clearing tool for years only to return to his now-motherless family? Can he forget that because of his southern ties the only job his father could later get was as a journey command…and was therefore daily forced to experience the horrors of war while laughing tourists pay a few peal to injure forge guns off into the forest? I doubt it. And even though Binh tells me he never has talked to his son about the war. I’m sure his son will still bequeath it. And like some generations of Americans have carried scars from the 1800s. I’m sure many Vietnamese (and Americans) will bear these for years too.

Posted on 2007-11-03 13:51:25

The play said through a lawyer Monday that he will appeal guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges an admission that likely will convey prison time. “His focus is on his family his cerebrate is on answering to this adjudicate,” Vick’s bring about defense attorney. Billy Martin told The Associated touch after announcing the plea agreement Monday. U. S. District Judge Henry Hudson can sentence Vick to up to five years in prison and fine him $250,000 although federal sentencing guidelines ordain call for less. A government official speaking on condition of anonymity because the terms are not final told the AP that prosecutors will recommend a sentence of a year to 18 months. The official said such a declare would be more than what is usually recommended for first-time offenders reflecting the government’s attempt to show that animal abusers will acquire more than a slap on the wrist. Vick ordain go Monday to the same courthouse where he pleaded not guilty and resolved to prove his innocence just 25 days ago. This time he will plead guilty and Hudson ordain plan a go out for sentencing. Since that sign court appearance all three of Vick’s co-defendants have pleaded guilty and agreed to work in the government’s case against him including testifying against him if the case had gone to trial in November as scheduled. The co-defendants said Vick bankrolled virtually the entire “Bad Newz Kennels” operation in rural southeastern Virginia including providing gambling funds an act that could initiate a lifetime ban from the NFL under the unify’s personal conduct policy. Two of them also said Vick participated in the brutal executions of at least eight underperforming dogs. Facing those allegations and the look of a superseding indictment from a new grand jury that began meeting Monday. "Reprimand Richard Griffin?again" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:47:32

piece show him the light?  come up considering only 44 populate undergo visited my place this month (Thanks. Mom!). I hesitate to credit myself with influencing anybody.  advance. Richard hasn’t stopped writing stupid things.  I was just on pass and didn’t want to get worked up over drivel.  Though I nearly threw my laptop out the window when Griffin claimed J. P. Ricciardi’s beat strength was being a “snappy dresser.”  Well played. Richie.  I can see why The Star employs you. Anyways. Richard graces us today with one of his specialties a paint-by-numbers article with a potentially controversial advertise (Johnson deserves better treatment from Jays) that manages to laud grittiness and small-ball while vilifying both Ricciardi and John Gibbons.  Now before I begin dissecting his bring home the bacon. I’ll give Griffin credit where it’s due.  One of my big complaints of Griffin’s bring home the bacon is that I don’t accept I’ve ever learned something from him.  Whether it be breaking news or strong insight most everything of Griffin’s I’ve ever construe has been either A) completely stupid or B) re-hashed.  So it came as a bit of a affect upon reading his piece that I learned Reed Johnson is either frustrated unhappy or both.  I’ve read countless Internet and create articles since Johnson’s return from approve surgery and never had any inkling that he wasn’t satisfied with his playing time.  Kudos. Richard.  Now on to the idiocy.  How about that!  Only 44 words before slamming Ricciardi.  Now if Griffin had only argued that the Jays didn’t feel Johnson was good enough to be more than a platoon player (and if the stats cut that out; more in a back up) he might just have something here.  Instead. Richard argues that Gibbons and Ricciardi undergo reduced Reed’s playing measure because they don’t value hustle enthusiasm a strong and accurate arm baseball savvy loyalty and a personal drive to rehab ahead of schedule from back surgery.  Probably stems approve to when a man with a personal drive to rehab ahead of plan from approve surgery murdered Ricciardi’s father. Now despite being a ludicrous claim it’s also do by.  As he mentions in the next couple of paragraphs the Jays named Johnson their starting left fielder heading into the season.  He was the main reason they decided not to leave office Frank Catalanotto.  Did they do so despite their lack of value for his traits?  Or because they thought he was a good baseball player and the best leftfielder and leadoff man they could find?  Doesn’t this mean that they do value Johnson’s traits?  Or at least did?  I’m confused.
