"Bacalao from now on?" posted by ~Ray

Prenote - I woud like to note that this article was written some weeks agoIt all began with Henrik Larsson a player that was not a semi-god at Celtic but a God. Larsson was extremely appreciated at Barcelona even well before the Champions League final where he had a crucial impact on the game when he came on (he gave passes to both Barcelona goals in the game). It was almost a mystery to the press in Barcelona how much the fans loved Larsson as his goal scoring record was good but not as good to justify his status perhaps it was his work rate that he compared to many other players did not arrive to semi retire and live a good life in the south but that he came there to work and work hard. He proved to be hungry to prove himself and became a real role model for both Eto’o and Ronaldinho admired by both players and they always mentioned how much they lurnt from him. Back to Gudjohnsen it is never easy to substitute a semi-god (which Larsson became at Barcelona) but he was believed to be a sound signing. Someone who at least would have the same work mentality as Larsson and who had a good record for Mourinho and Chelsea (but as a midfielder). Gudjhonsen started very well creating goals and scoring goals in his first games when he came on as a substitute. Before he had to chance to truly adjust to his new team he was thrown into the limelight as Eto’o became injured. Eto’o is a player that who had an amazing record scoring almost a goal every two games. A player that was not just important for his goals but he was tactically extremely important as the defence started with him chasing the opposite players like a lunatic. Gudjohnsen who is a very different players was suddenly the one who had not just to be the new Larsson but also the new Eto’o. A task impossible for any striker only that Gudjohnsen is perhaps more suited as a midfielder. Gudjohnsen’s track record up until Christmas last year was nothing to be ashamed of perhaps he was crucified for missing that open goal against Madrid and the fans never really trusted him after that. It is never easy to come to a team that has just won everything and were now showing alarming signs of complacency everywhere and I mean everywhere. The team never really got going and one title after another was lost and in those circumstances it is extremely difficult for a newcomer to adapt and it was not made any easier having to be the player supposed to score goals and win games. January came and the Spanish Cup season started in those games it is normally the opportunity for teams to play their second or third choice players. Saviola who at that point was the third striker started scoring goals a lot of goals only that they were against second or third rated teams. A massive media campaign started with everyone shouting for Saviola to play. Saviola is another of those players who is or rather was (as he went to Madrid) loved like their own child by the Barcelona fans. The campaign claimed that he was not being played as he was a burden from the past a player that was not played due to political reasons (a signing from the past board) that he was much better than Gudjohnsen oblivious to the fact that Gudjohnsen scored against most major teams (Werder Bremen. Liverpool. Chelsea) and that Saviola had to my memory never scored in an important game. He was simply thought by the media and fans to be a much better player than Gudjohnsen. Rijkaard seemed to have been influenced by that campaign aThe campaign led to that Rijkaard a man who perhaps can be influenced or rather does not want any trouble started to play Saviola. The opinion amongst Barcelna fans has been divided between those who think that Gudjohnsen is not good enough for Barcelona even a bad player and those who think that the title was lost when Saviola took Gudjohnsen’s place in the starting team. That the campaign sank Gudjohnsen and his self confidence and if Rijkaard would have trusted in his capabilities (as a striker) the team would have won the league. Those fans think that the club and coach have been unjust to Gudjohnsen and he was never really allowed a chance to really prove himself that he was discarded far too soon. When Deco was playing awfully Gudjohnsen should have been given a chance in the position that is probably his best position an attacking midfielder but for some reason he was never tried in that position. From being el bacalao he became Badjohnsen and the club seemed to be more than willing to sell him in the summer. He might not be good enough for Barcelona as a striker even if I am sure they could use him there but he is definitely a player that could be important in certain games. Like the one at Ibrox ParkWith Deco out and only Xavi and Iniesta available. Rijkaard had no choice but to play him. Rijkaard who had hinted at the difficulty of Gudjohnsen getting any minutes (as two teenagers were even ahead of him as strikers) had to trust all his faith in Gudjohnsen. In Glasgow perhaps as the other stars did not shine at all. Gudjohnsen was Barcelona’s best player. Football can have that beautiful turn when one day you are a nobody and the next day you are a semi –god or at least someone who is much needed. It is obvious by now that Gudjhonsen is no Larsson and it was a big mistake by the club to flag him as the substitute for Larsson. It won’t be easy to be Deco but at least his qualities are better matched as a Deco type of player or he could well be the substitute for a player that perhaps was not much appreciated by the fans but a player that is essential in the Champions League especially the hard physical games. A player who probably contributed more than he is grated for as an important part in winning the Champions League. Mark Van Bommel. It could well be that the club and fans will realise that Gudjohnsen is a better player than Van Bommel and that his part is much needed in the midfield when games are both physical and aggressive. The kind of player that all teams who aspire to win the Champions League have look at Gerrard. Van Bommel and Seedorf. Gudjhonsen is probably not as good as Gerrard or Seedorf but at least he is of that profile. It is just a shame that it has taken the club one year and a bit to discover and try his real qualities and that is more due to an accident (injuries) than observation. Here is one of my favourite Bacalao recipes:Here is one of my favourite Bacalao Recipes for four people. Bacalao celery tomatoes diced raisins black olives onion coarsely chopped pine nuts. Salt and pepper. De salt the fish (think for 48 hours changing the water four times). Cut celery to slices and parboil in boiling salted water. Sauté onion in a little oil and add tomatoes. Add fish after a few minutes and simmer for five minutes. Add celery pine nuts raisins and olives. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes. If necessary add a little wter. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

"The State of the Big Blue Nation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:21:29

Eight months after Billy Gillispie former coach of Texas A&M University was what is the state of the Big Blue Nation? In the last two months we have seen significant injuries complaints about Gillispie's unrelenting criticism and pre-game workouts and players leaving the program mid-season. We have seen the Wildcats lose to a hyphenated university and get crushed at home by North Carolina and the very next weekend a brutal beating at the hands of border rival Indiana. Ladies and gentlemen of the Faithful the state of the Big Blue Nation is discord. From the team to the fans there seems to be no end to the unhappiness and dissatisfaction with what is happening to our once proud program. Most of us fans expected bumps in the road and an adjustment period that is inevitable with regime change but this? Nobody expected this or if so they kept it to themselves. Make no mistake. I didn't expect a seamless transition but neither did I expect to see players with good basketball skills play this poorly. Most of us expected to struggle a bit this year but not to the extent that we have seen so far. Watching this Kentucky team play is no fun at all right now. In fact at times while watching them this year I have been reminded of a visit to a Navy dentist who drilled out one of my cavities with no Novocaine. Fun? Not. So why is this happening to us? Perhaps we all had our Big Blue shades on just a little too long when we thought about how this aggroup would be. If you evaluate about it it is fairly instructive that we have a walk-on starting on our team over scholarship players. That should be a write to all that something is not well. But we have also seen some strange coaching decisions from Gillispie so far this year. Here is a inspect in point -- we have had players foul out of no less than three games so far this season two players foul out in each of the last two. One thing for sure. Gillispie sure doesn't protect his players from foul trouble. At this point. I don't experience Gillispie well enough to know if this is a bug or a feature but there is more. Gillispie has not played one back up of zone defense this year. Now. I love man to man defense but virtually every college coach in America has a govern in his repertoire except apparently. Gillispie. The armchair coach in me suggests that perhaps a zone would have been a good thing to throw at IU yesterday at least for a few possessions just to give them a different look. The biggest reason we are losing right now comes down to one thing -- shooting the basketball. 39% shooting will lose you a lot of games especially on the road. The reason we shot so poorly is pretty easy to see -- we aren't getting the ball to our players in scoring position and our spacing reminds me very much of our spacing last year -- poor. That led to a very high number of challenged shots yesterday and when that happens shooting a poor percentage is almost inevitable. Our ball movement is poor and it is poor for a very simple reason -- we aren't committed to getting the ball to Patterson in the low affix. You have to be committed to that and yesterday we saw Indiana force us away from the spots we be to get to in order to make a clean pass to the affix. It's fundamental basketball. The way you attack that is with a dribble drive to the spot or roll reversal but we just aren't very good at either one of those. Michael Porter is at a quickness disadvantage so when he is on the wing like he was most of the day yesterday he doesn't have the room he needs to command or screen availability. That makes it easy to deny the wing pass from him or force him to pass the ball back to the middle. If we had put him at the top with Bradley and Crawford on the wings we probably would undergo done exceed. Another way to attack the wing denial is to compete the high-low which we did a bit of yesterday with some success. The problem is you need to have a confident big man out high and although Stevenson is getting better he still struggles with it a bit. By the way it was easy to desire but Perry Stevenson had a really good game yesterday. He was manhandled a bit down low by that huge round fellow Thomas that Indiana has but frankly. Thomas pushed and shoved even Patterson out of the way a lot. But Stevenson managed ten points and six rebounds made all his free throws made a couple of nice passes to Patterson on the high-low and generally played good basketball. Kentucky must get more production out of Bradley and Crawford. Crawford has been in a move for two weeks and Bradley well he blows hot and cold when it comes to shooting. When he shot a free impel 12'9" instead of 13'9" and barely grazed the front of the rim. I knew he was likely in for a long day. Unfortunately without Alex Legion or Jodie Meeks we can't afford for either Crawford or Bradley to have an off game. We simply don't have anyone else who can score from the perimeter. At the end of the day the problem with Kentucky right now is ball movement and knowing how to attack defenses in different situations. Crawford and Bradley have just never been very good at figuring this out and who really knows why? But we need somebody who can evaluate out there on the floor and get people in the right places. That sort of leadership is currently what we lack and while Patterson is clearly able to deliver the emotional leadership somebody in the back court must direct the team. So far we just don't have that person available. So I say to all my Big Blue brothers and sisters out there don't lose your wits. I don't know if this team will ever get there without more help and that isn't going to be available for awhile. It's easy to inform fingers at the coach and for sure there are things there to criticize but it's a bit too early to see if this is just a learning turn personnel problems or something more sinister and permanent. Let's just try to keep our shirts on and fight through it with the aggroup. You know we ask the team to fight through adversity all the time. I evaluate it's about time some of us fans started fighting through the urge to rant and rave angrily and keep our outlook positive. I personally believe we will get there but we obviously aren't going to get there without some pain. Let's just buck up and take it on -- this team is not one for the fair-weather fan. New coach new HARD NOSED philosophy being imposed on players that were not recruited by the coach devastating injuries and a wayward young man (Legion) who has made a serious identify regardless if he returns or not. Finally the cupboard was left extremely bare by Tubby (overall returning talent is mid level college at best.. or more accurately we have a team of role players and few stars/scorers. The analysis of this team should wait until we are completely healthy (if that happens) or until next year when we have a few more players on the team.... It is very painful now but to analyze every single move of this team while they are going through this transition is really an exercise in futility. If everyone keeps this up they will have to put our whole state on suicide watch. We will be fine gang... just undergo to get through this rough time. It wasn't too desire ago that UNC was going through a stretch that is quite similar to what UK currently faces. They got through it relatively quickly (2-3 years) and I think UK will too. While I wasn't expecting this kind of futility on the court given the injuries and distractions I can't say I'm that surprised by it. I think if either Meeks or Jasper were healthy this would be a much better team and of course if both were healthy they would be worlds better. What we have is a superstar in Patterson a all-SEC calber player in Meeks a decent but limited point gueard in Jasper. With the incoming recruits the next couple years the talent aim will rise greatly. alter now we are dealing with a few role players that may or may not belong at UK and then we have Porter. Coury. Carter. Williams and Harris who should not be on scholarship because they just are not good enough they are out of their unify. is frustration. This frustration is understandable and expected. It is expected because of terrible recruiting of the past has filled UK's roster with players who be at Murray State and EKU not UK. It is understandable because of an injuries to a very capable Meeks and a decent to good Jasper. Two young men who would be starting. Reality is that UK does not have the talent to compete with the UNC's of the world. When you start Coury and Porter you cannot expect to be competitive with IU or UNC. UK does not have any high caliber talent on the bench object for Meeks and he is in a suit. IU destroyed UK with two of their own stars out. In real estate it is location location location. in college basketball it is talent talent and talent. Poor recruiting in the past has left UK in this lay. Poor talent. Absolutely no depth of talent. That is why UK is struggling. It will change. Athleticism and talent is coming. Some of us are able to bare it knowing the future is bright; others struggle with the reasons why and cannot over come their emotions to realize what is truly going on; and others simply need to cry a river build a bridge and get over it. All in all. I still think the Cats will ultimately be better than they were last season. If not. Gillispie will be in some serious hot water in year one because being worse than the '07 version just isn't acceptable. Gillispie is in no way in trouble and it would be STUPID. IDIOTIC whatever you want to call it to think he is in any way not capable of turning UK into the program it used to be. It is hard for me to believe that he can turn all the teams around and do what he did with Texas A&M by turning them into a national power (who were they before Gillispie) and then he can come to the most storied program in the NCAA and not do anything. Patience is a virtue is the way I am taking it. Lets see where we are 2 years from now... if no progress by then I will be worried. ... but you are always going to have a select number of fans that are going to go from one extreme to another. The fans just need to change state and let Gillispie get at least 1 of his recruiting classes in. He is left to try to coach a mid tiered team who is playing the best of the best with a target on their back. Again. Gillispie was great at his previous schools so its hard for me to believe that he is in any way over his head here and won't be able to do it. He just hasn't had any time everyone really needs to relax and be happy we have a coach who will get the recruits in. Yes we may have a lack of talent out there.. but despite all my feelings that Tubby had to go. I feel like he would have shown a exceed handle on that game than Gillispie did. I don't know how to explain my feelings for Billy Clyde right now. I almost feel like he's a nice shiny car that when you open up the hood its rusted out and has problems getting started. I love the energy I saw out of him in the off-season but so far I have been decidedly unimpressed with his break decision making. I think this feeling must be starting to change in many of us.. we tried to justify the GW loss by saying that he was trying to "teach them a lesson" for Christ's sake!!! We all expressed a confusion on why he made no adjustments at half-time of the GW game but had faith after a few more games. I'm beginning to wonder if he CAN make adjustments. My wife hasn't liked BCG ever since he was introduced at his press conference in the spring. She said he looked like a "goober" and that he was in over his head. She likened him to the captain of the chess team who just got a date to prom with the head cheerleader.. just clueless and out of his league. All through the summer. I shook my head and laughed whenever she brought it up. Then he came out with the sleeves rolled up on his warm-up outfit at Big color Madness and her commentary on his appearance and demeanor became nearly unbearable but I shook my head and laughed. Now I'm beginning to wonder... What isn't fair is those populate calling for his head or going overboard. Plus if he were to be canned this early it would be a black mark on our entire program. I think Gillispie will do just book and I have confidence in his ability as a coach. I think most of the BBN does as come up. We will probably all look back at all this angst and laugh. I can't help but recall the Louisville fans early last year when the Cards were looking weak calling for Pitino's job. That wasn't a small minority either that was a very significant be of fans. The all looked foolish after the season was over. I really have a hard time with that. I think any of us would take the team he built at Texas A&M in a heart beat right now... so why do you think he can't do that here? If he can take A&M definately not a basketball school and turn them into a national contender then do you really honestly think he can't do that here. It takes more than one year to do it... and I think everyone in the BBN would at least know it takes at least giving the man measure to bring in at least 1 of his own recruits.... Patterson and Legion are not what I would consider a BCG categorise although Patterson was a key pick up for him. All in all I think we just have to have patience grit our teeth this season and have confidence we will be back to CONSISTENT greatness in a bring together of seasons. That Legion abandoned his team when they were in greatest need. Missing our two starting guards and headed into our first road game of the year. Legion caused issues that kept him off of our sidelines. As I watched the debacle that was IU vs. UK. I couldn't help but feel that Legion should share in a majority of the responsibility. Granted his presence likely wouldn't have changed the outcome much. I still believe that his selfish decision making over the past week has been more detrimental to the team then anything else. This is a team with limited talent the result of years of mediocre recruiting. Only one player can be regarded as an excellent shooter. Meeks and he is injured. This team reminds me of Pitino's first team at UK limited talent although they played their hearts out. They also had some shooters although this team is better athletically. This team is not playing bad defense they just don't have many players who can score. Without the defense it would be much worse. The program was in bad hands for years and gradually fell to the present level. Give Gillispie time to move it around. The fact that both Coury and carry are getting significant playing time says it all. I grew up listening to Cawood on the radio. I remember the excitement of the '78 championship. Later on. I thrilled to the excitement of being able to watch the Wildcats on television. Every time the starters were introduced at the home games my heart would swell with pride for the Kentucky blue as the chillbumps grew on my arms. I have been a fan for many years and I have rejoiced with the team in a win and mourned their losses. When the team loses no one feels it worse than the instruct and the players. I don't think success is defined more as to how one handles adversity (loss) rather than how one reacts to prosperity (winning). Let's stop questioning the ability of our team/instruct so early into the season. The players may be reading these comments and they need all the support we can give them. There was mention of the 1978 team.... the nickname for that season was "A season without celebration." Why? Because a national championship was expected and when they won the players were more relieved than happy. The fan expectation is so high here. We are never satisfied. In 1996 we had possibly the greatest college basketball team ever yet people were upset that we lost two games that year. In 1997 probably Pitino's best coaching job there was a great broach of criticism because he would not play Derek Anderson and that we would have beaten Arizona had he played. In 1998. Tubby won with Rick's players (I for one don't think Rick would have won it with that team... that team was perfect for Tubby's style!). 3 Championships and 1 runner up and no one is ever happy. Now the shoe is on the other foot. We have Billy working hard to get us back to the top so we can worry more about a championship game vs who is going to transfer. This is utter chaos. I for one am tired of it! We are all using this new gift called "Thu Intranets" (little bush joke there) and my Dad who has been a barber for 39 years is laughing because this is how it has always been for him and his fellow barbers. All day every day through every season of every coach. It seems worse because we can all talk to each other and evince. I know we arent coming off probation but the express of the program is what it is. Billy G will get the job done we just have have have to be patient and give him the opportunity. Alright that was an ugly game for sure. Sometimes it's just one of those nights. Nothing seems to go right. Some of you might remember the 1984 final four bet against Georgetown with Patrick Ewing. UK shot something like 11% in the second half. Now that was ugly! My point is that sometimes even good teams have nights where the shots won't fall. It's the nature of the game. There are a lot of factors going on here with the injuries lack of depth distractions. Going into the season. I really though we were going to be loaded in the back act. With so many really good guards how were we going to keep populate happy with playing measure? I never thought I'd see us have Bradley and Porter hit out and then have to shift Crawford over to be the primary ball handler with no other guards in the game. Yep that was ugly but there's been worse. This group is a work in progress. Keep supporting them and they ordain be alright. i think us making ANY tournament this year hinges on how early meeks and jasper can return if its late in the year or not at all this year i do not think we will even make the NIT hopefully i'm do by but it doesn't look good nor did i expect it to of course i thought it would be better than it is but... 1) all the injuries 2) Legion gone no one could have predicted those things what was predictable however was that we were't going to immediatley be at the top bcg has to have time to get his players in and either lose or re-train tubby's left overs i have not lost hope in this new coach at all of all the turn arounds at his other schools none were done the 1st year it was the second year i will keep watching and will not lose hope at least for a few years each loss ordain cause to be perceived each victory will be sweet but just fasten on! The Tubby situation: True. Tubby did not leave behind an extraordinary amount of talent. But the level of ability is not as low as some would have us believe. Crawford. Bradley. Stevenson. Meeks. Jasper. Stewart. Those are six pretty good players. Joe and Ramel while not blessed with leadership skills can perform at a high aim. Consistency has always been their problem. Playing smartly has always been their problem. I don't think Simith is to blame for that. Meeks as we all know is a stud. Stevenson and Stewart both show a tremendous amount of potential. Stevenson especially is beginning to come into his own. Neither are blue chip players but I feel they can be molded and coached up to a level worthy of UK jerseys. Morris going pro obviously hurt. With him in the lay even with the loss of Meeks and Jasper this team would be much much better. Sometimes a player leaves and the team never misses a beat sometimes they struggle. This is one of the times that the team struggles. Jared Carter people forget was recruited and offered by North Carolina and Illinos. Ole cryin' Roy thought enough of him to visit Scott Co at least once to watch him play. The few minutes he has been on the court the last few years I undergo seen some athletic ability and a couple of nice post moves unfortunately he has had no time to hone his skills and become a better player. Who' fault is that? Tubby? I don't think so. Bad luck is who I blame. Clyde: He has through no fault of his own been placed in an unwinnable quandry. He is attempting to teach his aggroup in front of the world without two starter being present. I saw him coach approximately 10 games before he arrived at UK. My perception of him was that he was an excellent game coach. I don't think he has forgotten how to coach when the lights come on. All I hear him say before and after games is that "we have a long way to go". Truer words have never been spoken. I claim no inside knowledge into exactly what his blue print for success is but it is much much too soon to question his coaching acumen. I believe he has a plan and he is sticking to it regardless. I applaud his belief in himself. The Injuries: Fans who don't realize that the injuries to Meeks and Jasper have and will continue to cripple this team are living in another universe. Not having those two playes healthy have forced Coury. Harris and carry into playing many more minutes than their talent dictates. I have no problem with those guys (Harris and Porter) being on scholarship. But they are not SEC caliber players when it comes to starting. Every team has 2-3 players who don't see much action. Not every player can be a Top 30 guy. The rants I read about those two receiving too many minutes and blame it on the former coach alter me sad because I know there is some poor soul out there who is clueless. Injuries brother! Injuries brother! It really isn't that hard to understand. Legion: Some may disagree but Clyde needs to gather him up and let him know he is wanted he is needed he is loved. Ahhhh. Then kick him in his ass. The program needs him to stay if an agreement between him and Clyde can be reached. He is an extremely talented player and UK is not in a position to allow talent to walk out the door unless the situation is totally unresolvable. I don't want to here this crap about UK being bigger than any one player. "We'll get someone better" etc etc.. The time for prideful rantings are over. We need players especially someone with his talent especially with Meeks and Jasper ailing. End Game: The sun will rise gas prices will go up and my mother will create from raw material a magnificent Christmas dinner. Some things in life will always be the same. UK will be back help is on the way.-- Speaking of help. Mr. Hopson is sure talking like UK is at the top of his new list.-- Some knee jerk reactionaries theorize that it will be years before UK again dominates. I say assail. UK has had struggles before and will in the future. But they will always come back strong and dominant. tip on it. "I predict we have a pretty good team next season"We're losing Crawford and Bradley. Although they don't make us a great team they do provide a lot of minutes points and experience(even if they don't show it sometimes). They're being replaced by two freshmen who are supposed to be very good but lets approach it they're gonna be freshmen you don't know what your gonna get out of them. This years aggroup with Meeks and Jasper should be a good team but next year? I don't know."back to being great in two years."Great is maybe a little strong but I believe if BG gets two solid years of recruiting in it would be possible. But I would bet on more like 3 to 4 years before we have a chance at a truely great team But Patterson will be around one or two more years. Meeks will be back and ready to go and a healthy very serviceable Jaspers will return. Now you have three seasoned. UNSELFISH leaders that will bring along the future stars in Liggins. Miller (who will move up to 5 stars) and it looks like Hopson. I expect Hopson to sign with UK and if that does happen you arguably have a top 5 recruiting class. And these guys are atheltic... VERY athletic. My beloved UK fans patience.. the future has never been brighter! This is truly one year when you can smile and say wait until next year; because there is a change in the talent level that is occurring that is night and day from the previous years and it will make a HUGE difference. I also think these incoming freshman are going to furnish you more than Joe and Ramel furnish you which is minutes and every other game points. Thats about all they bring to the table. I think we will have a good team next year like top 30 good. I expect to be back in the top 10 by the time Miller is a soph. Keep in mind thats just my opinion not an expectation. but Miller and Liggins are gonna be freshman. We may just get minutes and every other game points with them as well maybe not change surface that much. Or they could be a couple of Durants and really take us to the top but I doubt it. I honestly think we'll be lucky to have Patterson back next year and I would bet a paycheck that he won't be around for his junior year. If there is one thing that has worried me about Gillispie is the approach that he's getting all these commitments but still no big man. Can you imagine if Patterson left this year it would not be a good year us next year. And it is very possible the guy is putting up consistent double doubles you know pro scouts are waiting in line to talk to him.

"THOMPSON GOES ?ALL IN? FOR IOWA CAUCUSES" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-12 23:15:57

FORMER TENNESSEE SENATOR Fred Thompson has decided to act his race and virtually all of its resources to Iowa in an all-or-nothing attempt to register a strong showing in the caucuses here on January 3. “We’re getting create from raw material to make this not only our back up home but our first domiciliate,” he told a small gathering of supporters at the Polk County Convention bear on on Friday night. Thompson and his wife Jeri chatted with the displace before making their way through the exhibits at the Iowa Farm Bureau’s annual meeting in downtown Des Moines. Beginning Monday. December 17. Thompson ordain launch a bus journey that will take him throughout the state. From the beginning of that trip through assemble night. Thompson ordain essentially be in Iowa taking only a one-day trip out of the express to celebrate Christmas at his home in Virginia. “Iowa is critical to our campaign and it may in fact be everything to our race,” says one Thompson official. “If we don’t do what we need to do in Iowa it will be tough to compete effectively down the road.” Outgunned and outmanned by Mitt Romney and on the downside of the go for Mike Huckabee who has captured much of the support the former Tennessee senator was depending on to be competitive. Thompson finds himself in a do or die position in Iowa. He has disappeared from polls in New Hampshire garnering less than 5% and trailing Ron Paul. Most importantly he finds himself 3rd in the vital South Carolina primary losing to Huckabee and Mitt Romney. Thompson’s troubles have been well documented by the national press (I detailed those criticisms for ). But beyond the familiar litany of charges that he’s too lazy too detached and doesn’t be to be president bad enough there is simply the be that Thompson never lit a fire under conservatives in Iowa or New Hampshire. This left an opening for Huckabee who patiently cultivated the religious right and then tapped into the enthusiasm of the bring together Tax movement. The combination has proved itself potent – up to this point. Recent revelations about Huckabee and his intervention to get a rapist paroled (who then went on to assail and murder two women) as well as a groundswell of opposition being spearheaded by The Club For Growth who see his fiscal policies as governor in a decidedly unconservative light may create doubts in voter’s minds. So Thompson’s “all in” act to Iowa may be coming at exactly the alter time. As people begin to really scrutinize Huckabee’s record. Thompson will help them along by highlighting his opponent’s total lack of undergo in foreign and defense policy: “All I’m saying is that national security and foreign affairs is the most important thing facing this country,” said Thompson. “It affects our security and the security of our children. And who has nuclear capability is the most important part of the most important issue. I think it’s best if someone has undergo in that believe. I’ve spent a lot of time—I served on the Intelligence Committee in the United States Senate. I’ve traveled around and met with foreign leaders. I chaired a committee that involved oversight of nuclear proliferation issues and things of that nature. So I evaluate it’s surprising that someone that would aspire to be president takes the lay like closing Guantanamo for example is a good thing. And does not keep up with what’s going on in Iran.” In addition to throwing a bucket of cold wet on the boom for Huckabee. Thompson’s emphasis on national security issues may finally arouse those conservatives who see foreign policy and defense issues as the most important criteria to adjudicate a potential candidate for president. Previously much of Thompson’s amaze speech has been devoted to his thoughtful ideas on federalism – not exactly red meat for the right but positions that have earned him praise from most GOP quarters. A change by reversal to emphasizing his foreign policy credentials while Huckabee stumbles over Iran and other issues dealing with the War on Terror could be just what his campaign needs to win back (or get off the fence) many conservatives who may be uncomfortable with Huckabee’s inexperience. Thompson has previously said that he must finish third in Iowa to remain viable. That look certainly appears within reach even if he can’t advance Huckabee. But realistically. Thompson must exceed expectations in Iowa by finishing second in order to generate the kind of momentum that would propel his candidacy forward. And a first place finish – a remote possibility but not unimaginable – would shock the field and give the campaign a huge boost making the candidate a contender even in states that he’s not doing well like New Hampshire and Michigan. There is something appealing about a candidate who recognizes what needs to be done and doesn’t hesitate to try and do it. In Thompson’s case he is putting it all on the line in Iowa in a make or break effort to achieve a breakthrough. [...] I accept with heap Moran: Thompson has previously said that he must end third in Iowa to remain viable. That look certainly appears within reach even if he can’t overtake Huckabee. But realistically. Thompson must exceed expectations in Iowa by finishing second in request to generate the kind of momentum that would propel his candidacy send. And a first displace finish – a remote possibility but not unimaginable – would shock the field and give the campaign a huge bring up making the candidate a contender change surface in states that he’s not doing come up desire New Hampshire and Michigan. [...] I wish Fred is a very strong third. I share yor opnion of the Huckster. If he is “the man” the GOP will get crushed; and we will deserved to be crushed. IMHO Fred is the only man to seriously address the major isssues of the 21st century with well articulated ideas. Some of his plans will ge painfull. But if we do not contend these problems(ie. Soc Sec) the end result ordain be much worse than a little pain. Which is why (IMHO)Hill. Rudy. Mitt. Obama et al are ducking them. Everything you list as aspersions against Fred are just that aspersions. They are also patently false and were created/repeated by the left leaning MSM and political pundits before Fred even entered the race…they are that scared of a real conservative occupting the color House. Given your take on the situation you were obviously taken in by it also. How could this be?.. because people don’t do their own homework they’re too work parroting nonsense when all the information they could ever want is at their fingertips. A very similar thing can be said about the Huckster only his reinvention of himself and what he says today on every subject except one yes one is a come end or complete opposite of his position or actions a very short measure ago. If you haven’t chosen who you’re supporting yet please do your research first as the work has been done for you from reliable and credible sources. If you have already chosen a candidate based on only what they are saying today you are being duped by several of the candidates…. Fred isn’t one of them. If you read what I wrote you would cognise that it is a slavishly pro-Thompson conjoin. To ignore the “aspersions” is to ignore reality – something you be very capable of doing.

"A day around Covent Garden" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:54:22

Much of my day yesterday was spent in the area around Covent Garden. Drury Lane and the theater district. The transformation of this area of London in the last 30 years is remarkable. From the old flower merchandise made famous by and it was very much desire this when I first started going to opera at the Royal opera House in the 1950s. Covent tend is now transformed into a fashionable and trendy shopping destination. The underground station can not mouth to act with the 21st century crowds so getting there is a create of hell. But this is all good for opera no doubt - and the Royal Opera is undoubtedly flourishing amidst the move of this merchant and restaurateur's paradise. I had a delightful lunch with my dear good old friend Julia Maynard and her accomplished associate Hannah Taylor. Julia has been around the opera business for a generation and is now now one of the most respected of singers' managers in Europe. And all this whilst bringing up a splendid family. She is now with after earlier extended stints with and. London is certainly rich in the services it provides in our business. And the biggest elephant of all is - these four together ensuring London's substantial decide of hold back over the industry. Following eat the Royal Opera once again generously provided audition space so I was able to surprise up with some interesting new talent. The evening was devoted to the 90th birthday celebrations for a friend of over 40 years standing – Alan Wood. Alan was a distinguished member of the upper management of the great Irish brewer. Guinness was the major support of the Wexford Festival when I was Artistic Director there from 1967 to 1973. Not only was there corporate commitment from Guinness but also the Guinness family was show in compel at each festival. Here was a very early example of private munificence to which we are relatively accustomed now but which was rare then. The commitment of a founding family may be unique. During all my years there and for many years after. Alan and Joan Wood brought parties of the great and the good to the Festival. He was a remarkable host and they were tremendous friends to us a friendship that has continued desire after we all left Wexford. He subsequently but much later departed from Guinness as that company lost its personality and separate identity in the merger and acquisitions fever which has eliminated so much engrave and individuality from international business. Guinness is now just another mark – so sad. Alan then went on to be Administrator of – a far cry from his measure job as continue of Guinness Overseas a huge company with breweries in Asia and Africa and elsewhere. His love of the arts and his extraordinary ability to bond with such a variety of populate from all walks of life made him an ideal leader for that theater at a time of great change. So we all his large family and so many friends gathered together at the last night to get together him and his accomplishments and friendship. His energy is undimmed and his sparkling eyes and wit likewise. And it was good to have been at the Garrick where I have been a member for 30 years. Living in Chicago my visits to the club are rare these days. And so today has been family day – opera and opera matters off the agenda. I am posting this rather late not being to get on line until after 11pm.

"10 Lessons X Three + Three" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:53:13

My father. Lee Devine is celebrating his 75th birthday this week. My parents (divorced both remarried) are two very different populate and I have traits of both. I feel lucky to have been raised by such individual people because I am richer for having these diverse influences. To commemorate my dad’s birthday. I‘ve described the lessons about life that I received from him. I would undergo an equally desire list of lessons learned from my mom but this list focuses on my dad. Dad is a fun-loving goofball. I am too when I let myself. He loves sports crafts tinkering in the garage making music and playing games. And he’s game for just about anything – I like that! Even after a tough day at bring home the bacon (physical work) he was available and eager to do something. He even made cutting the lawn fun by getting a speedy riding mower that had a adjust turning radius. We would zip around that thing like it was a dune buggy. One day the lawn was a bit wet and dad drove the mower alter into the furnish! How funny it was seeing him going in and hearing him yell as the mower hit the water. It never ran the same after that. Although he never went to college and finished high school via a GED my dad is a creative and ingenious man. He’s always been a MacGyver kind of guy who can make anything out of anything. My school science projects were always inventive and original because of my father’s ideas. He built our pool in the shape of Africa. He created beautiful stained glass doors and windows and made our yard an interesting work of art (Complete with peeing boy statues benefit lights and cannons!). I inherited my bring about foot from my dad. go is exciting fun and adventurous. A mundane move to the drugstore could change state an adventure in his homemade hotrod car (with no doors). Cape Coral. Florida was less populated then and we could go drink the streets unobstructed. I loved his ride rides and now go one of my own. Our boats sped through the water (often full check onto sandbars!). Our lawn mower was fast. Cars were abstain. Everything was fast. “Let’s get on with it!” Why sit around and mope? We could be doing something fun. I was fortunate that neither of my parents used the television as a babysitter. I was encouraged to be active and engaged and my dad loved to participate. We would hit around the obtain feed our Oscars (big fish in the cichlid family) compete tennis and discuss our theories about life and science (which could run the gamut). We would try to grow tomatoes and pick them right as they got ripe and eat them whole while chatting on the come in remove (much to my care’s disappointment because she never got to use any of the tomatoes for dinner). This desire to do something often resulted in odd projects. We created a coop and got a rooster and hen. The rooster did not experience when to stop crowing and the hen got out and was eaten by one of the resident alligators so that ended up not working out so well. We would go to the undeveloped areas north of town and surprise wild guppies to feed our big Oscars. Unfortunately the wild guppies ended up eating the fancy guppies we bought at the pet store. Other projects were more fruitful. How thankful I am not to be ruled by rules! As long as we aren’t hurting anyone or anything rules can be stretched and redefined (and sometimes should be). Take golf for example. When my Dad and I compete golf we break every rule and have a blast! No crime has been committed no one is harmed and the wet holes get half our balls. My dad has always had the attitude that a wee fib or stretching of the truth may be the beat way to go in certain circumstances. I think of his philosophy as a way to not get hung up on cram that doesn’t matter. So smart. Dad has always been change state to new ideas and theories about things. He is willing to think many things are possible. We don’t know what we cannot understand. I evaluate this is a very positive outlook and one that I am glad to acquire. Pyramid power? Sure. Life on other planets? Maybe! Alternative versions of how life evolved? Why not? My favorite of dad’s theories involves linking all three of these areas. He has this idea that Adam and Eve came from another planet to populate the hide and the pyramids were used as transmitters to the care planet/ship. Sounds funny but it is really any more of a stretch than other prevailing notions? My dad was a tighten believer in trying to fix or modify things before calling in the experts. This sometimes backfired on him. desire the time he set the house on fire (and he was a inform fireman – how embarrassing). Or the time he set the boat on blast and the time the car engine blew up. Perhaps this lesson should not be universally applied but aside from a few mishaps dad was able to alter most things better. His ingenuity allowed my family to be a richer life. We had a great house fun (fast) toys and a new trombone/bugle/dog/bike/tennis racket. My dad has always made very personal and wonderful gifts for populate. Each gift has been an expression of his creativity and thoughtfulness. Looking approve there were several personal gifts I did not appreciate enough. I regret this now. Luckily. I have moved past the yuppie materialistic 80’s and 90’s and now love giving and getting homemade gifts. Handmade gifts are an expression of love and are heirloom items. Life is worth living OUT LOUD. My dad has always had flair. He is not too shy to wear bright color pants and a pink shirt to play play (or just hang around) and his sense of fashion and décor has always been punctuated with boldness. Some of his ways of beingcolorful may be a bit garish but he is never boring. act his Jacuzzi spa. Around the spa he has several Greek styled statues poring water into the spa. There are plants everywhere and cool romantic lightening. Orchids bubbles and piped in music alter for a sensory explosion. populate who are hesitant to ask for what they be are often this way because they are hung up on getting a positive response. The irony is that if you don’t self-destruct when told. “no,” you ordain get more yesses. I learned the value of making requests early on. Most populate be to conform to us and many are happy to help! I also learned that I was a pretty good salesperson. Boats dogs hamsters chickens turtles fish birds bikes instruments tennis lessons camp go and bugle and debate club trips. He enjoyed seeing me excited about something new and didn’t get too frustrated when the new thing eventually fell out of favor – it’s all about experimentation. Dad has always poured a lot of energy into his domiciliate. This is one area where my parents have the same determine but kill it very differently. Dad fills his home with personal finds and homemade touches. My care creates a lovely uncluttered and serene oasis. You might sight my dad’s accommodate a bit kitschy but it is clearly his castle and is filled will all his toys and tools. He has a head that vibrates has speakers in the wings and a pyramid light overhead. It’s his govern. What I’ve learned seeing these two different styles is that wherever we live it must be personal and comfortable. Small gestures mean so much and my dad has reinforced this through the years. Sometimes the silliest things can be special. For example whenever I visit my dad looks forward to a fancy frozen drink made by bartender Lisa. I undergo never been a bartender but he loves the concoctions I go up with and knows I create them.
