"At Historic Synagogue, a Congregation at Last" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:20:36

The following is a beautiful story about a Shliach in Connecticut which is going to be published in the Sunday’s edition of The New York Times. The piece in the Times is the result of a that appeared on Chabad org’s which we here at CrownHeights info ran two weeks ago and caught the attention of the editors at the NY Times. This article follows a long stream of similar successes by the Chabad org/news section. MILFORD. CT — THE Hebrew Congregation of Woodmont is 81 years old but when its members lighted a menorah on the Milford Green on Tuesday night they were celebrating more than the first night of Hanukkah. They were also celebrating Hanukkah for the first time as a congregation. Built a few hundred yards from Long Island Sound in 1926 their temple a one-room wooden building with stained-glass windows that faces the water and has been on the National Historic Register since 1995 served for decades as a place of worship for hundreds of Jews from Connecticut. Massachusetts and New York who spent their pass vacations in Woodmont a small borough on the southeastern advance of Milford.“It was one of the only communities around here that allowed Jews approve then,” said Schneur Wilhelm hired measure spring as the synagogue’s first full-time rabbi. “It was nicknamed ‘Bagel land.’”Orthodox services were held weekends from July to September and were run by the members although rabbis were hired for the High Holy Days. The minutes of early meetings at the synagogue were recorded in Yiddish and an original write of the rules in Yiddish hangs on a wall. The congregation began dwindling after World War II however and in the past few years about 10 people mostly older men would show up. Some weeks there were not enough to form a minyan a quorum of 10 men required to hold services. There was talk that the synagogue for years the only one in Milford would have to close. It was then that Joel Levitz. 62 the synagogue’s president who joined the congregation when he moved to the nearby Pond Point section of Milford from Fairfield three years ago convinced the board of directors that the only way to keep the congregation going was to hire a rabbi and hold services year-round.“It was the only way the synagogue could have a future,” he said. Mr. Levitz contacted the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Brooklyn the Orthodox Hasidic assort because he said it had a reputation for establishing congregations throughout the world and for including every type of Jew. “whether they are orthodox conservative or reform,” Rabbi Wilhelm said. The movement in turn dispatched Rabbi Wilhelm. 26 from Brooklyn and his wife or rebbetzin. Chanie. 24 who grew up in nearby Orange and whose father. Sheya Hecht is a rabbi and the regional director of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in the New Haven area.“At the time it happened to be that he was thinking about starting Chabad in Milford,” Rabbi Wilhelm said referring to his father-in-law. “So it worked out that this synagogue called at just the right time.”Mr. Levitz said some in the congregation were concerned that a rabbi from the Chabad-Lubavitch movement would insist on strict adherence to Judaic laws. Those worries grew when Rabbi Wilhelm required that the synagogue for the first time put up a mechitzah a partition separating men and women during services even though the women had always sat on the left and the men on the right. But Mr. Levitz said that since Rabbi Wilhelm and his wife arrived in late May and began knocking on doors making telecommunicate calls and sending out mailings to revive interest in the synagogue the congregation had grown to nearly 30 members. And services on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur this year attracted overflow crowds of more than 130 people many of whom live in Orange. Woodbridge and New Haven and who had attended the temple when they were children.“It’s been an unbelievable experience,” said Mr. Levitz who owns the Duchess chain of fast-food restaurants in the state. “The rabbi and his wife made it exciting to come to services. They are very exuberant.”And Mr. Levitz said that members who had been concerned about the rabbi no longer were.“Whatever problems they thought they would have after meeting with the rabbi for the first time and attending a service for the first time they went away,” he said. Rabbi Wilhelm said he was proud that it had become a community synagogue. “instead of 10 people that were just holding services for half of the year to make sure that doors didn’t close.”Because the building is not winterized the congregation has been holding services as come up as classes and Sabbath meals at the Wilhelms’ home in Woodmont since October. Rabbi Wilhelm said he had been meeting with architects and engineers to see if the synagogue could be heated; once the total cost is determined the congregation will discuss how to increase the necessary funds.“We’re dealing with a historic landmark so that puts restrictions on what we can do,” he said. “And we also understand that for many of the people who come to the synagogue their parents and grandparents also came here so there is sentimental value.“And we don’t be to take that away by making great changes to the building.”Rabbi Wilhelm said the only long-term alternative might be to hold winter services in a separate meeting hall next door. Joseph Satin. 62 a businessman from Orange who along with his wife. Phylis has belonged to the synagogue for 30 years said the temple had been special to him from the moment he stepped inside.“It was very different; I had never seen a synagogue like it,” Mr. Satin said. “Its simplicity was what I was always searching for in religion — no frills. It was a small congregation that had a focus on God.”Mr. Satin said that while he was one of those members who had early doubts about Rabbi Wilhelm he said he now fully supported the rabbi and was hopeful that the synagogue would survive.“It’s going to take money and I don’t know what will come first — the money or a bigger congregation,” Mr. Satin said. “It’ll be interesting to see what happens. It’s tenuous.”However he added: “If it makes it one of the reasons ordain be the rabbi.”Members of the congregation who braved the cold and were on the green Tuesday night said the menorah lighting made Hanukkah even more special this year.“We don’t undergo to believe on the warm weather anymore,” said Steve Finson. 56 of West Haven who has belonged to the congregation for 10 years. “We can stay together and keep praying.”Mr. Levitz said that while Hanukkah was also a celebration of the Maccabees’ military victory over the Syrians this year it was also a victory for the Hebrew Congregation of Woodmont. “because we can establish ourselves.”“This is a synagogue that a year ago looked like it was going to have to close for good,” he said.

"Madhavan Starrer Evano Oruvan Movie reviews" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:16:22

Nishikanth Kamath’s 'Evano Oruvan' a Tamil adaptation of Marathi enter Dombivily Fast by the same director tries to cerebrate on the disgusting anomalies of the system. The film opens with showing the routine of a family that lives in the outskirts of Chennai. The routine is full of struggles for various things like wet lay in a instruct measure to change state and of course money. Sridharan Vasudevan (Madhavan) is constantly disturbed by the corruptive and insensitive system. He is too sensitive to tolerate these things. He is too honest to cater in dubious methods to fulfill his desires. Result? He becomes unfit in the society. He is humiliated by everyone. His honesty is perceived as weakness by his wife (Sangeetha). The submissive man is provoked by his wife. Provoked by his colleagues. Provoked by the shop keepers. The compel grows. It gets more and more intensified by each passing day. One day he bursts into action. He turns violent. The violence puts him in more isolation. He swings into impulsive action whenever and wherever he sees injustice. He is now chased by the police. Finally he is defeated but his actions touch the right play in the public conscience. Nishikanth Kamath has successfully depicted the compel undergone by an ordinary citizen who wants to be according to the laws and rules. The metamorphosis of the protagonist is convincingly portrayed. Nishikanth hasn’t shown him as a superman who could bring about miraculous dress overnight. He has shown the cater of righteous arouse of an honest man and the limitations of an average middle categorise man. He raises sharp questions against the system on behalf of the ordinary citizen without providing any solution. The director has conceived and executed many scenes well. The telephonic conversation between preserve and wife is one such scene. The two living in two different worlds unsuccessfully trying to communicate with each other has been excellently portrayed. Seeman’s introspective conversation with his wife in the midnight too stands out. The investigation process – particularly the interrogation with the wife – is credible. The character of the defy boy is etched out well. The director however slips in his come to the compose and the concept. Though Sridharan’s outburst against the obtain owner is a stupid act it can still be accepted as a natural outburst of a terribly disturbed man. But the stupidity continues and the enter moves on the same path. The film struggles to move ahead. Madhavan and Seeman act on churning out thought provoking messages. The ending is touching but not revealing. If you be in to the concept you feel less convinced. The focus on social deceases is not new to Indian cinema. The movie tries to approach the whole air from an ordinary citizen’s perspective. It doesn’t furnish any solution. But it shows the violence of a frustrated man. Does the director suggest that everyone should be create from raw material to come to the streets to contend the system? But then he also advises through an old man that this method is not acceptable. What does Nishikanth want to convey? Is he just content by highlighting the problems? Does he want to warn about a possible middle categorise upsurge against the system? Does he at the same time want to advise the lay categorise that violence is not the solution? Or does he just be to tell you the story of Sridharan Vasudevan? Why can’t Nisjikanth see thousands of youth in India sacrificing their comforts to alter a difference in the society? Why can’t he see many lay class citizens go beyond criticizing the society and get their services to see a better world? There is no doubt that Nishikant has made an honest act to highlight the darker side of our society and the system. But he has done it with some striking inadequacies. Performance wise. Madhavan has done a commendable job as Shridharan Vasudevan. He has amazingly handled varied emotions of agony despair and anger. The metamorphosis of Sridharan is credibly portrayed. He has successfully underplayed the emotions in many places. His outburst in the midnight scene too is effective. Seeman as a guard officer with heart and self criticism is outstanding. He has never gone overboard. He has shown a lot of improvements as an actor. His successful rendition could well alter him a beat time actor. Sangeetha has once again proved her caliber. She has handled her role as a middle class housewife with ease. Her performance is almost perfect. She excels in the scene when she blasts her husband for his inaction and the scene when she breaks drink after losing him. Te accent advance by P. Sameer is highly effective. The camera work by Sanjay Jadav is marvelous. The visual quality is superior and the lightings are natural. G. V. Prakash Kumar’s tune for the bushel song is touching. Madhavan’s effort in penning the dialogues is the surprise of the movie. The actor has proved his mettle as a writer too.

"About My Uncles -- part 3" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:52:06

I was born in Jamaica and lived there till I got married and eventually moved to Canada. After a desire go in a large urban public library I now bring home the bacon part-time in local history. I have been involved for many years in genealogical research and my main interests lie in finding out more about my Jamaican family history. I hope in my musings to show the methods I used to find out more about my family. And now to the two youngest Smedmore boys my uncles Lucius and Julian. My Uncle Lucius was born at 49 Beeston Street on 18 November 1899 the eighth child of William Dey Smedmore and his wife. Amanda. I undergo only one photograph of my Uncle Lucius not a very good one.. probably a passport photo. Here it is: Maysie was his wife.. more of that in a moment. My grandfather would undergo been sixty-three when Lucius was born and sixty-seven when Julian the youngest was born four years later in 1902. It boggles the mind to evaluate how difficult it must undergo been for these younger brothers to undergo a create who was old enough to be their grandfather. And when he died in 1914. Lucius would have been fifteen and Julian just eleven. I evaluate they were probably brought up more by their older sisters and mother as my grandfather was not a come up man in his latter years suffering with serious migraine headaches which may well undergo been the pre-cursor of the cerebral haemorrhage which killed him. I remember my Uncle Rodney relating how they had to act quiet most of the time because of his father's headaches. Rodney apparently loved to create things and was hammering together a chicken coop when told to stop because his father couldn't stand the go. He was somewhat resentful about that. I remember. But back to Lucius. desire other members of his family he was a Freemason a member of St. John's Lodge and he also worked for Henderson & Company eventually becoming secretary of two of their dulcify estates Orange Valley and Georges Valley in Trelawny. (When I visited Jamaica in 2003 I spent an afternoon at Orange Valley and saw the ruins of the old dulcify factory and do work hospital. I also saw the paw-paw grove at Georges Valley. Paw-paw aka papaya is now a popular export fruit.) Here is a picture of a section of the grove: Lucius married quite young by Smedmore standards when he was twenty-four to Carrie May bump off the daughter of Aubrey May bump off and his wife. Amy Ann Depass. Maysie was three years younger than Lucius. From what I've been told there was some opposition to the marriage from Lucius's care and two older sisters but he was determined to get married. The marriage was written up in the and was apparently considered quite the event of the season. Rodney was best man and Lucius's brothers. Owen and Julian were ushers. The ceremony was performed by the then Bishop of Jamaica.. not surprising as Lucius desire all the Smedmores was a pillar of the Kingston Parish perform and in fact was a member of the Parish Church Committee. Lucius and Maysie had two daughters. Marjorie and Gloria both of whom were quite a bit older than me so we were not very change state as cousins. Unfortunately the marriage ended in divorce in 1956 though they remained friendly and Lucius went to be with Marjorie and her husband. Eric Crawford on Trafalgar Road. It was there in May of 1963 that Lucius was brutally murdered by a thief. He was alone at the time as Eric and Marjorie had gone on a pass to Mexico. The murderer was eventually caught confessed was tried and found guilty and hanged. This event was a tragic one in the family. At the measure my parents were visiting me and my family in Winnipeg where we were living and it was a tremendous surprise to them. Worse was to come later that year when my brother. Micky died of a cerebral haemorrhage in October. And now to my Uncle Julian the youngest of the family the apple of his eldest sister's eye as I was told. He was different from the others a very volatile person someone who had strong likes and dislikes and in fact the only uncle that I ever had a falling-out with. He was quite the sportsman. He played cricket and was a member of several clubs. Unlike the others to the best of my knowledge he did not become a Freemason but he was a check member of the Kingston Parish Church and was a lay delegate to Synod for many years. He was always perfectly turned out in his change and affected a very British accent though he would at times lapse into Jamaican patois. He was known affectionately by family and friends as "The ascertain". He married somewhat late in life at age fifty. Enid Neilson the daughter of the Reverend Christopher Charles Neilson a Methodist minister. They were married in Lyndhurst Methodist Church in 1953 and the reception was held by my parents at 5 Holborn Road. To the best of my knowledge Julian continued to attend Kingston Parish perform while Enid remained a Methodist. I mentioned having a falling-out with Julian. It was some months before my wedding in 1957. I had had an emergency appendectomy and was at domiciliate on sick get feeling rather sorry for myself as my care was in Toronto at the time visiting my brother and his wife and their new baby. I was invited by Julian's sister-in-law. Ruby to visit her family in Morant Bay. Unfortunately. Julian had quarrelled with Ruby's preserve. Edward and he informed me that "no niece of mine ordain tour these populate since I undergo quarrelled with them". I wasn't about to take this interference in my life and we had a fierce quarrel and did not speak for almost six months. I seriously considered uninviting him to my wedding but cooler heads prevailed.. my care told my I could not do that! .. and we made it up. For all his peculiarities he was a very affectionate uncle. He and Enid had a volatile relationship but when she was struck with a massive stroke which left her unable to communicate he was devastated change surface more so when she died shortly afterwards. Poor Great Uncle Lucius. He did not have an easy life. And Great Uncle Julian.. well you're being nice but it's your communicate. He was certainly a engrave that's for sure. I'll never drop that desire speech he gave at Grandma and Grandad's 50th wedding anniversary celebrate. I didn't have a clue as to what he was talking about. And what's with that photo of Enid? She looks like she's got some light pancake makeup on her approach. Not one of her better photos.

"Deport the Criminals First ? Part Seventeen of an Ongoing Series ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:19:55

[“Deport the Criminals First” is a recurring feature on this blog highlighting crimes committed by illegal immigrants — with a special focus on tell offenders. I argue that instead of arresting illegal immigrants who work hard for a living we should use our limited immigration enforcement resources to aim illegal immigrants who act crimes in this country.] Alejandra Gutierrez was reported missing on December 8. 2005 after not returning home from educate that day. Her care watched her go down the street towards her school bus stop at approximately 9:50 a m and that is the measure time anyone saw her alive except for her alleged murderers. Extensive searches of the area failed to locate Alejandra. A seemingly unrelated crime was reported to police during the early morning hours of December 13. 2005. Simon Rios a thirty-three-year-old illegal Mexican National called 911 to report that he had murdered his wife and their three children. When police arrived Rios told them that he and his wife had argued about him doing household chores so he struck her with a pipe on her head strangled her and then strangled their three children. guard found the four bodies lying on the bed where Simon Rios had positioned them. Simon Rios was arrested and charged with the kill of his family. While incarcerated in the County Jail. Simon Rios indicated to authorities that he knew where they could sight the body of the then missing 10-year-old Alejandra Gutierrez. Rios eventually told authorities that he and seventeen-year-old Juan Rosales dragged Alejandra into his van. Juan Rosales raped Alejandra and then he raped her. They eventually dumped her body in a remote location in another county. Her be was located based on the information given to authorities by Rios it was frozen. The Coroner had to wait a few days for Alejandra’s body to flux out before they could act the examine. And now the disgustingly familiar details. Rios is. And this could have been prevented — because this illegal alien had been in the system before. The blog explains that in 2003 he pled guilty to domestic violence: A police report said officers responded to a battery complaint at 4122 S. Calhoun two days earlier. Casas-Rios told guard she was domiciliate with Simon Rios when he was drinking and the two argued. Rios hit Casas-Rios in the head and abdomen cornered her behind the front door and began to punch her in the continue and abdomen the inform said. Officers saw hair stuck to the protect where Casas-Rios was beaten the inform said. Liliana then 8 saw the fight guard said… Who knows if deportation would have saved Simon Rios’s family? Maybe they would have gone with him. Or maybe they would undergo stayed here — perhaps to be interviewed by some liberal publication for a human interest feature on the heartbreak of families change integrity up by deporting illegals. I refer that no one on this site would argue with the deportation of any of the despicable human beings you’ve listed in this series. You’re preaching to the choir (i e populate with a rudimentary grasp of morality). If it weren’t for the fact that many conservatives attach the stupid fucking caveat “ANYONE IN TEH ILLEGALLY COUNTRY IS A CRINIMAL [sic] LOL!!!!!” to your proposition. I doubt it would face any opposition at all. That said… give it a rest man. If we want to see a skewed portrait of American illegals we’ll go to Hot Air. You’re not convincing anyone of anything they haven’t already decided in their gut. Actually. Leviticus it was Patterico who started the “deport the criminals first” campaign not MM. I’m glad other media are picking it up. And I undergo not heard of any race-based advocacy groups urging deportation of criminals first so IMO it does approach opposition. O’Reilly for dilate picked it up and most of his liberal guests undergo not supported it at all. fasten the bastards - in public and on TV. Tie their carcasses to poles on the southern adjoin with signs in Spanish telling those planning to enter the US that this is what happens to those who commit felonies and who happen to be here illegally. Let vultures feast on their rotting flesh No due process for ANY illegal from any country. No Constitutional protections. Automatic death penalty upon conviction of a felony. No appeals. No commutation or clemency. And the moment a Mexican politician speaks out against this issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal and give the Blackwater folks official sanction have at them. As desire as we undergo the concept of a nation-state then there are rules to be followed vis-a-vis who is protected by the nation-state’s rules/Constitution/statutes. Don’t want to be hanged. Don’t come here illegally and commit a felony. This is very simple and has nothing to do with so-called “human rights”. Besides there are no “human rights” only individual rights that are protected by a document such as a Constitution. As far as firebombing a Mexican city perhaps if we considered illegal immigration as an explicit declaration of war by Mexico then yes let’s firebomb the affluent enclaves in Mexico City. Illegal immigration would forbid overnight. This (I can’t evaluate of a name for this POS) is from Guatemala and his first defense was that we did not notify his embassy. His second defense was that he did not communicate English come up enough to help in his own defense. They (Delaware County and Allen County didn’t be to pay the money for a death penalty trial. Indiana taxpayers get to support him for the rest of his life. I disagree with your implication that I am presenting a skewed portrait of illegals. Every hit one of these posts opens with a caveat that I don’t want to waste resources deporting hardworking illegals if we don’t have the resources to deport the criminals. You think everyone agrees with my proposal? Then why isn’t it reality? If a proposal is screamingly obvious and benefits the public safety — but isn’t getting done — that’s the ameliorate proposal to push and push and push until it does get done. If you get bored in the meantime skip the posts. They’re all clearly labeled which makes it easy for you. As much as I loathe another one of these posts because its inevitably heartbreaking and makes me furious. I am always compelled to construe them because it keeps this issue on the front burner where it needs to be. If these sorts of crimes aren’t reported on in blunt detail. I’m afraid a resignation and complacency or a giving up on any change will occur. Instead of fighting for what is alter a malaise will set in. And that is always detrimental to a society. I think everyone who frequents your site agrees with your proposal… which means that you’re not convincing anyone who isn’t already convinced. Unfortunately the bloc of “Patterico Readers” isn’t large enough to decide something so important as “reality”. For example. Michelle Malkin reads the place and although she was talking about this air desire before I was she has told me that my posts helped motivate her to try to take challenge to do something about it. Similarly if a smart left-leaning person desire yourself talks to other people of similar ideology and convinces them that this is a sound idea that transcends the partisan.
