"Lecture by Bob Huish: Health care as a service, a science or as sales" posted by ~Ray

Bob HuishSimon Fraser UniversityTrudeau Foundation Scholar. promote's GraduateHealth care as a service a science or as sales: Cuban medical internationalism and a changing global ethics of furnish prestige and profit. consider1 in 20,000 European mothers die every year from child birth while in Africa the mortality rate is 1 in 100. The Swiss enjoy a doctor to patient ratio of 1:277 while in Malawi that ratio is 1:50,000. Never before has more money and time been dedicated to overcoming health care inequity in the global south. Governments charitable foundations and the private sector are all bringing tremendous financial and material resources to the table. However on a global scale health care remains painfully inequitable. Despite this global inequity one small poor nation is making a world of difference with an amazing investment in resources: human resources. For 46 years Cuba has sent over 100,000 health care professionals to 103 nations in order to deliver badly-needed services and to instruct locals to be health professionals themselves. From Haiti where over 500 Cuban physicians have delivered services in rural areas to Pakistan where over 2,000 health professionals responded to the needs of 110,000 victims of the 2005 earthquake. Cuban medical internationalism has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people from the developing world through human resource based community care. Cuba's medical internationalism has been a success not simply from the amount of physicians and medicines it has sent abroad but how it has applied its services. This economically hobbled nation has embraced a project in international relations and community health compassionate that reaches marginalized communities improves their capacity and invests in human resources for sustainable health compassionate furnish. Cuba's approach to health compassionate as a right and as a function has made an incredible impact in the global south. Yet the country has also made impressive scientific advancements and it actively seeks business ventures in the health care sector to acquire national revenue. How does Cuba balance the ethics of health compassionate so that it provides services to the poor achieves outstanding scientific advancements and obtains foreign capital? To answer this question it is important to understand the ethics of investing in people before things; an idea connected to the pensamiento of José Martí This approach desperately needs discussion and understanding in global health dialogues as it.

"Sustaining a Healthy Online Community" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:48:56

I’ve in a bring together of places but I don’t evaluate I’ve actually posted what we ended up kind of coming up with as pretty decent measurements of the health of a community. But perhaps I should first define what I mean by community health: Heh. Right. So what this really means is that you be to first set your goals (with an emphasis on qualitative) and nextdefine your metrics. Of course after all of that is set out you canfigure out how to bring home the bacon that (which is just as convoluted). So it was recently brought to my attention that perhaps I’m indulging my virtual world appreciation a little too much these days.  Well– there are person/professional reasons for it (change is healthy).  I thought I’d post Tara’s fab article instead of my typicaly VW rambles.  Tara capture over at HorsePigCow has a great write up about the health of a community.  The article above is totally worth checking out for anyone in communities.  She covers a) setting goals b) defining metrics c) Qualitative measurements and d) important thoughts on metrics.  The bipolar chicago weather today has forced a “brain darken” upon me… I’d like to inform advance about the importance of the elements Tara explained in regards to kids/youth/tweens/teens… but that darn hit cloud is hiding the sunshine of thought.  Ugh.  (It was 90 degrees two days ago it’s 50ish today - fall is coming in hard!)
