£6M Investment For Dental Education In Liverpool

One of Europe’s largest facilities for training dentists ordain change state in Liverpool tomorrow marking the start of a £6 million investment programme. The new £1.1 million Operative Skills Suite features 46 ‘phantom heads’ which alter University dental students to create clinical skills on a life-like replica of a human mouth. The state-of-the-art facility features digital X-ray imaging connected to each unit so students can view clinical demonstrations as they learn. The opening of the suite by the UK’s Chief Dental Officer is part of a £6million investment by the Department of Health (DoH) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in enhanced teaching facilities in the School of Dentistry which will enable an increase in student places from 275 to 400 by 2009. The investment programme includes the construction of five sedation suites and five oral surgery suites state-of-the-art training facilities new tutorial rooms enhanced patient facilities and new laboratories. A specialist unit for patients with disabilities ordain also be created. The unit has been specially designed to accommodate wheelchair users with street aim access and larger areas for administering treatment. Sedation and recovery facilities have also been designed for patients with special needs in mind. Professor Cynthia Pine. It will provide them with most up-to-date facilities for practising clinical skills before they register the workplace so they are trained to the highest standards in dental techniques. Clinical Director of the University of Liverpool Dental Hospital said: “We are absolutely delighted with the investment being made in the Dental Hospital. As well as improved training facilities for students the funding will alter us to create and equip new clinical facilities for patients undergoing minor surgical procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth. In addition the new sedation suite will mean a better dental undergo for those patients with disabilities and complex medical needs."The new facilities will be accommodated in a dual extension to the Dental educate and adjoined Dental Hospital. A two-storey extension will house an additional multidisciplinary clinical skills suite with interactive life give simulators as come up as new seminar rooms and a lecture theatre. A further five-storey extension will include enhanced patient facilities such as a new sedation suite. 10 new surgeries and provision for integrated clinical and laboratory testing.
