Saginaw County infant mortality rates took a dramatic dive measure year compared with 2005 the Department of Public Health says.

The No. 1 cause of infant deaths in Saginaw County measure year was asphyxiation such as a baby suffocating under a cover or when a sleeping parent rolls over on a child. Shanafelt said. Premature birth was the next leading cause.
"Suffocation outnumbered prematurity by one death," she said. "This shows we need to continue our safe sleep education."
The coalition has invited 300 health professionals educators and community leaders to a Fetal and Infant Mortality Leadership Summit Friday. Nov. 2 at the Saginaw County Intermediate School District's Transitions Center in Saginaw Township.
The goal of the summit is to create a new collaborative plan for combating infant deaths. Shanafelt said. Efforts to change magnitude knowledge about women's health before and between pregnancies and help those most at assay to change behavior are top priorities.
