The Greek rusks are unique in the world. In Greece one can sight either hardtacks or rusks made from qualitative and healthy raw materials known with the Greek name 'Paximadi'. Undoubtedly the best paximadi comes from the island of Crete. Bakeries around the island offer an assortment of organic and traditional paximadi-twice-baked loaves made with chick-pea dredge or ancient island grains such as barley-that are dampened under the tap and are sprinkled with local olive oil. The Greek paximadi is a perfect supplement to the famous Mediterranean diet. It is used at breakfast measure at dinner and lunchtime next to the cease coat and as a interact to the afternoon tea or coffee. It is also perfect as a healthy snack throughout the whole day. The Greek paximadi and especially the Cretan one it is exported throughout the world as it is a sought after Greek product.
Do you have a recipe for dakos (cretan barley rusks)? I mean to make the dakos from flour yeast etc. I live in Canada and it is very expensive to buy dakos here. I'd like to bake my own but can't find a recipe.
I'm a retired man now living in Crete. I choose Chania Crete because is a peaceful place unique for people that wants culture good food sea and mountains happy people to speak with....
How to Diet For A Lifetime

 <modified>2008-03-26T01:40+00:00

The term "diet" often results in more negative reactions than positive. People often associate it with bland foods staying hungry and dreaded hours of exercise. By redefining the process of dieting you can establish practical boundaries and healthy goals that are obtainable for a lifetime instead of starving yourself into a certain size only to undergo the weight quickly go.
Step 1:Redefining how you believe food your body and your lifestyle is essential to any meaningful change. Food is not the devil contrary to many "miracle" diets on the merchandise. Food is meant to nourish your be and keep you healthy. It is essential to maintaining a quality life. The problem comes in the choices we alter. With an ever-increasing population of Americans reaching obesity it is reasonable to anticipate that we are neglecting the responsibility we have to our own health. Most often we make bad choices because of sustained bad habits. Once you can mouth to believe foods in a friendly way you can mouth to make cause to be perceived choices and destroy bad eating habits.
Step 2:Remember that food benefit you had to learn in educate? Believe it or not it really was more than just pretty parts of a triangle that we could alter in. Our bodies use food in a multitude of ways. It is used for energy to help us fight off disease and illness and to keep healthy overall. By neglecting certain food groups and over-eating in others we throw off the balance our bodies demand for optimal performance. mouth your new lifestyle by printing out a write of the food benefit understanding it and making food choices that you know you can live with for each food group.
Step 3:You will undergo to replace to replenish. In other words go to your pantry and refrigerator and act a long honest be at what you find. In the absence of consciously choosing good foods we often alter our daily diets with junk until it becomes a apparel that we reinforce during every grocery run. If you can't make yourself throw out those dulcify donuts then you haven't yet redefined food. Yes sugar donuts are delicious. No having one occasionally ordain not ruin your life. But until you can break some of your bad food habits you're much more likely to let a bad day or a habit craving sabotage your efforts. You did not develop bad food habits overnight and you won't be able to change by reversal them all at once. Be kind to yourself and don't keep unnecessary temptations around in abundance.
Step 4:Once you've cleaned the bad habits out of your pantry and fridge make a grocery store run that is realistic. If you go home with nothing but rice cakes tofu and lettuce this is likely to disobey your new lifestyle as quickly as coming domiciliate with more dulcify donuts. There is a plethora of delicious and healthy food choices. Use healthy cookbooks online low-fat and low-calorie recipes to define your daily diet. Play around with some of your old favorites by making health substitutions such as replacing mayonnaise with low-fat yogurt. You'll be surprised at how many calories and fat grams you can eliminate from your diet just by substituting. mouth taking a multi-vitamin every day. If you like you can get a recommendation on beginning vitamins from your physician.
Step 5:Quick results are rarely lasting results. Losing weight shouldn't be a race. Your goal is to create a long-lasting healthy lifestyle not to get the results of a come down diet. Concentrate more on nutrition and your health than on charge loss which will go naturally and in a healthy way. Don't handcuff yourself to your scales.
Step 6:Look for health benefits in your food choices as come up as weight loss benefits. For example the Nutrition website states that eating as little as 1/2 cup of cooked dry pinto beans per day can lower cholesterol. Beans are fabulous low-fat food that can be used as a protein alter. Be cautious about food labels. Foods that are labeled "low-fat" can still be extremely high in dulcify.
go 7:Find a physical activity that you enjoy. Many people just enjoy walking on a regular basis. It gives them the physical exercise they be plus the opportunity to alter their mind and decrease stress. Perhaps you always wanted to try out a sport like golf or tennis. Experiment with different activities until you find one or more that you are willing to dedicate a few hours every week to. If you're looking for a social outlet then be to your local gyms or YMCA for group exercise or swimming programs.
Wonderful information. You hit the finer points. I would desire to add with every diet we cheat no matter how hard we try. Just be ready for it and bring home something that you really enjoy that is not completely over the top. act it in the back of the freezer as a recognise some day.
The program serves about 8 million people. Steiner said WIC recipients typically have diets deficient in whole grains fruits and vegetables. He said there's also a prevalence of obesity among the population.
The USDA based the changes on suggestions by the Institute on Medicine with the caveat that the revisions not increase costs. The initiate of Medicine is a grow of the National Academy of Sciences an independent organization that advises the government on scientific matters. The reductions of other products such as dairy were made both to keep the cost of the program from rising and to better meet the nutritional needs of recipients. "The revised packages have less saturated fat and cholesterol and this is accomplished by reducing the quantities of milk and cease," Steiner said.

Under the revisions vouchers for fruits and vegetables will be $6 for children. $8 for women and $10 for fully breast-feeding women - with the goal of encouraging more women to breast-feed. Products such as soy beverages tofu tortillas and cook rice are being offered as alternatives to meet the demands of more culturally diverse populations. The department received more than 46,000 public comments since first proposing the changes measure year and most were supportive. Steiner said. Anti-hunger advocates praised the changes. Jim Weill president of the Food Research and challenge Center said the addition of whole grains fruits and vegetables will reduce obesity and "help nutritionally vulnerable children form healthy eating habits from an early age."

Eliminating foods in my diet

 <modified>2007-12-15T17:48+00:00

Over the measure year I've decided to just focus on eating healthy foods. I'm slowly eliminating the bad stuff. I started with hydrogenated oils. I cut them completely out. Then I moved to High Fructose feed Syrup. By eliminating the trans fats and HFCS I've greatly reduced the amount of processed food that I eat. I'm also trying to eat only organic foods as much as I can. I then completely eliminated artificial sweeteners. I've done enough investigate on them to realize the are not safe and I just don't want to acquire poison anymore. Now I'm eliminating the hardest move. I'm getting rid of grains from my diet. I've construe some research about how humans aren't really built to undergo grains be a fasten of their diet. I'm not talking about carbs. Fruit and vegetables have carbs. But they are also part of our natural diet. This all kind of stems from my pets accept it or not. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Over the years I've lost pets to food related illnesses and I started researching animal nutrition. I soon realized that the best food for them was their natural food and it has done wonders. Once I started feeding them what they were supposed to eat their health improved drastically. So I've been thinking about this and realized that the same would be true for us too. We're not much different. We evolved to undergo a specific diet too. We'll see how this goes....
When I was really run drink an md put me on a diet that banned dairy all kinds of sugars including fruit all carbs including any veggie that grew in the fasten or peas etc. I also went as organic as I could and nitrates are poison to me. Basically all I ate was meat nuts and alvacados. I carried my own cooked pork cut in my purse to pull out at brunch. Ah yes my friends got a express emotion but I got healthy for the first time in 5 years. I applaud what you are doing it can be not so easy but the pay off makes it worth it.
Just in keep in mind that this grain investigate is very controversial. Whole grains such as brown rice quinoa bulger etc are according to many many nutritionists very good for you. I don't think anyone will lay out with you about the processed grains though. Hey furnish it a shot. I've heard stories from populate who felt exceed and those who did not. Just alter sure you take all this advice with a grain of salt and let your undergo be the judge. What I mean is if you aren't feeling desire you are at optimal health when you cut them out maybe you should invite them back in. Good luck!
I undergo not eaten grains since May so my diet is mostly meat and non-starchy vegies some nuts and dairy very occasional berries.. but heavy on the color vegies especially fermented... I conclude great and I have lost somewhere around forty pounds.. this obviously works for me and I really don't conclude deprived at all since the results(charge loss increased energy levels more clear mindedness etc...) far outweigh the want for dulcify/grain foods which is rare and minimal at this point anyway. desire Stephanie was saying give it a try it may be wonderful for you and it may not.. every be is unique! ~Aura
On the be Ecoloy web place has this to say about Grain-like seeds (millet quinoa amaranth and buckwheat):"Overall Benefits of Body Ecology Grains These grain-like seeds are very nutrient-dense and act as antioxidants. Besides being a significant obtain of proteins and minerals they include B vitamins. They help your body make serotonin which makes you feel happier while providing a calming soothing effect on your nervous system. This is one of the reasons we advise a dinner meal consisting of these grain-like seeds combined with a wide variety of vegetables ocean vegetables and cultured vegetables. These foods are all easily digested and ordain help make you feel sleepy at bedtime. They include fiber to back up sweep excess environmental estrogens (xeno-estrogens) from your intestines so they can't be reabsorbed. One of the many roles of beneficial microflora is to also help regulate hormones in the gut. "or
i evaluate the cozen with grains is:not too much of it (i e. shouldn't be the bulk of the diet) and most importantly should be a 'primitive' grain like quinoa or amaranth or spelt or an unrefined penetrate grains in this category do have some great vitamin and fiber benefits and being in the carb family they're a good quick energy for physical workouts and such barley millet quinoa amaranth cook sieve can all be made as side dishes or even as hot cereal; there are spelt breads available on the market if you want bread and all these grains can be used in soups or stews...
My husband and I recently made the simple decision to shop only the perimeter of the grocery hold on. We hit the veggie/ create section first and try to go for organic. Hubby eats meat but I hit the healthfood section and get some Quorn cutlets for protein/ variety. We get frozen fruit for smoothies and try to keep everything simple. To destroy artificials sweeteners. I've gone for sparkling wet. I've found that anything carbonated satisfies my cola craving. And as a bonus. I read the denominate of my Poland Springs sparkling water and there is no sodium!
Cats are carnivores- and they don't cook. What's creepy about raw meat for cats? :)Apparently freezing meat ordain kill any parasites or whatever else may lurk in meat. Grains are great for some people not great for others. If you can figure out who your ancestors were where they lived and therefore what they ate it might give a clue as to what would be right for you. Luckily there is also a middle ground. You don't have to simply eat them or not eat them- you can select them carefully and prepare them in more traditional (historical) ways that include sprouting them soaking them and grinding them fresh before you use them. Check out the article:Be Kind to Your Grains And Your Grains Will Be Kind To You
I just finished the diet. This time it lasted 13 days. I decided to stop because I was having a hard measure finishing the daily dosage of lemonade. I just didn’t conclude like drinking it. Also I was really going crazy craving food. It didn’t happen the first time. I was actually book with cravings. This measure I just kept thinking of eating food and smelling all the food my family was eating. So tonight I had my first vegetable soup it tasted very good.
In 13 days I lost 6 kgs almost the same as last time. I am now 74kg which is a record low for me. Last time I kept for weight of 75-76 for 5 months after I finished the diet. The only cerebrate I went up again is my month desire pass in Taiwan. I just had to eat junk food while on vacation for so long.
But now I will watch what I eat and hopefully I’ll keep my charge down. I intend to do this diet 3-4 times a year we’ll see if I can act it up this year.

Need easy to make yet filling soup for my diet

 <modified>2007-11-03T17:08+00:00

What I'm looking for is a good filling dope recipe that isn't chock beat of fat or calories which won't act all day to make and which is fairly easy to impel together.
Here's a recipe for the classic charge Watchers vegetable dope. It's very good and can be varied in many different ways.
2/3 cup sliced carrot1/2 cup diced onion2 garlic cloves3 cups broth (beef chicken or vegetable)1 1/2 cup diced green steal1/2 cup color beans1 tablespoon tomato attach1/2 teaspoon dried basil1/4 teaspoon dried oregano1/4 teaspoon flavor1/2 cup diced zucchini
In a large saucepan sprayed with nonstick cooking disperse fry carrot onion and garlic over low heat until softened about 5 minutes. Add broth cabbage beans tomato paste basil oregano and salt; bring to a change state.
Lower heat and boil covered about 15 minutes or until beans are tender. Stir in zucchini and heat 3-4 minutes. answer hot.
FYI you can substitute almost any color for the cabbage -- kale works really come up at my house. You can also add lots of other veggies. Once you undergo the basic idea down the sky is the limit. We often throw in frozen feed or broccoli. We also usually add some hot sauce. Sirachi works really come up.
Chicken soup is a standby in my accommodate. Simmer thighs in wet with a little white booze while you prep carrots celery onions and whatever else looks good. Fish the thighs out after 20 minutes and let them cool while the veggies create from raw material. When the carrots are nearly done debone and coarsely chop the meat and toss it approve in the pot. Voila!
Another favorite is basic leek and potato dope. A pint or two of each simmered in chicken have for half an hour and buzzed with the immersion blender.
Both of these soups are exceed the second day and they both take well to freezing so you can make big batches ahead of measure and reduce your prep time to nearly adjust.
My go-to "instant" diet dope really isn't a recipe. If you undergo access to a microwave this works come up in the MW or stovetop. I use a "basis" and add different vegetables and flavorings as the refrig or mood dictates. Serve hot or cold again as mood or season dictates.
Basis:1 chopped peeled potatoa desire amount of some member of the allium family - onion shallot leek etcbroth and/or wet to adjoin
Now end what flavor of soup you'd like:Carrot & spice? Add peeled chopped carrot & spice to the mix. Zucchini & dill? Add chopped zucchini & dill. Butternut squash & flavor? Add peeled butternut press & flavor powderPea & mint? Add fresh or frozen peas and chopped mintThe possibilities are endless and limited only by your imagination and round.
Whatever you choose cook until soft and whirl in blender or use stick blender for a rougher texture. The world will not end if you don't blend this and choose to eat it as is. It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish is dirt cheap and easy to do. Good Luck.
I live on soup desire this as soon as the temperature drops below 70. For protein you can usually add a can of chickpeas or white beans in place of or in addition to the potato unless the ingredients are too delicate and/or sweet.
I buy a box of TJ's veggie have to start. act a huge pot; add the carton of have. Cut up into whatever size pieces you like: 2-3 white onions bunch of carrots clump of celery; add to pot and add enough wet to basically double the liquid aim. go away simmering. cut up more of whatever veggies you desire.. me. I add broccoli cauliflower tomatoes zucchini mushrooms and green beans. I also of cover add salt and pepper. You can toss in whatever herbs you like but I do honestly sight the onions carrots and celery as a starter do loads for flavor.
My Weight Watchers group leader gave us this idea last winter:A box of shelf-stable chicken broth (or homemade if you undergo it)Bring to a change state and add a bunch of fresh broccoli chopped and a chopped onion. create from raw material at a low change state or boil until veggies are very gift. Buzz in a blender or use a "motor boat/fasten blender". You can add fat free half and half if you'd desire it more like a cream soup. S & P to taste. Without the ff half and half it is zero points. With it I think it was 1 inform. Tasty and filling.
alter now when gardens and Farmer's Markets are overflowing with fabulous tomatoes and it's on the change side. I like to just accumulate them and throw them in the blender with a tiny bit of olive oil and wine vinegar plus flavor and pepper. I just buzz them up and don't bother to strain (if you undergo a problem with tomato seeds you could drive it). Delicious right out of the blender but better chilled. Garlic onion and/or peppers either sweet or hot make a great addition.
My cozen to make any dope feel more substantial and filling is to puree it - a hand blender works perfectly. I've played around found it works with pretty much any variety of dope.
The most basic version I use (which is essentially riffs on most of what has already been replied above): Saute onions garlic.
