"Aroostook Mental Health Center - Depression: Major Depression ..." posted by ~Ray

TUESDAY. Nov. 25 (HealthDay News) -- contradict changes in health behaviors are a major reason why heart patients with depression have an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack say U. S researchers who followed 1,017 outpatients with stable coronary heart disease for an add up of 4.8 years. Depression has long been recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in healthy people and for recurrent events in patients with cardiovascular disease. But the reason for this association hasn't been alter. Dr. Mary A. Whooley of the VA Medical Center in San Francisco and her colleagues used a questionnaire to measure the heart disease patients' symptoms of depression. The researchers then used various models to evaluate the connection between subsequent cardiovascular events (such as heart failure heart attack stroke) depression disease severity at the start of the chew over and biological and behavioral factors. The researchers found that patients with depression had a 50 percent greater risk of cardiovascular events -- 10 percent among those with depression compared to 6.7 among those without depression. When the researchers adjusted for other existing conditions and cardiac disease severity depression was associated with a 31 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events. Whooley and her colleagues further adjusted for certain health behaviors including physical inactivity and open there was no longer a significant association between depression and cardiovascular events. They calculated that physical inactivity was associated with a 44 percent greater rate of cardiovascular events. Heart patients with depression are less likely to follow dietary exercise and medication recommendations and poor health behaviors can lead to cardiovascular events said the authors of the study which was published in the Nov. 26 issue of the "Understanding how depression leads to cardiovascular events is necessary for developing interventions to decrease the excess cardiovascular morbidity (illness) and mortality (death) associated with depression," Whooley and her colleagues wrote. They said their findings "raise the hypothesis that the increased risk of cardiovascular events associated with depression could potentially be preventable with behavior modifications especially exercise. Given the relatively modest effects of traditional therapies on depressive symptoms in patients with heart disease there is increasing urgency to identify interventions that not only reduce depressive symptoms but also directly target the mechanisms by which depression leads to cardiovascular events."

House lawmakers are set to hold out a presidential veto threat and choose to grow the state children's health program or S-CHIP that expires on Sunday."President furnish should support the bipartisan S-CHIP legislation for ten million reasons," said House Speaker. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D). The decide would extend coverage to more children of the nation's working poor. The money would come from increased tobacco taxes including a bring up in the federal cigarette tax to a dollar a pack. President Bush vows to block it. "I accept this is a step toward federalization of health compassionate. I know that their proposal is beyond the scope of the program and that's why I'm going to veto the bill." But the President looks increasingly isolated on the decide."Mr. President please reconsider your decision on this account," pleaded Senator throw Grassley. (R) Iowa. On Monday the account's Republican support stood alongside hospital and insurance groups in support of the 10-year old program."We've seen more kids get regular checkups more access to care getting a healthier start to life and being more productive day in day out," said President & CEO. American Hospital Association Rich Umbdenstock. A contradict could force congress to pass an emergency extension of S-CHIP. Federal health officials are urging states to compose contingency plans to help children who may suffer coverage without it. "Fact Check on Children's Health Care" posted by ~Ray

Second this account does not expand eligibility for SCHIP. It overwhelming targets resources to low-income children and it discourages expansion to families with more moderate incomes by lowering the overlap the federal government will pay for such coverage. The bill also adds practical guidance that maintains state flexibility on SCHIP eligibility prioritizes coverage of low-income children and limits the crowd-out of private coverage. This come replaces the administration’s flawed one-size-fits-all guidance. Third the bipartisan conference agreement does not cover adults. So the guy sitting at that bar isn’t going to be covered by the schedule. It is illegal as come up as unlikely that the child of a hit care with an income of about $40,000 would be at that bar. CLAIM: Secretary Leavitt said. “They suggest that the account will affirm 4 million additional children. There are 900,000 children who currently do not undergo coverage who would qualify for SCHIP. That means that the balance of them which would be 3.1 million children are children from families with higher incomes.” FACT: This claim rests on data analysis that has been widely discredited. Asked to comment on Secretary Leavitt’s claim that there are only 900,000 children who currently do not have coverage who would qualify for SCHIP the Congressional Budget Office Director wrote. “In summary. CBO regards the estimates of between 5 million and 6 million children who are uninsured and eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP as more allot for considering policies aimed at enrolling more eligible children in those programs.” The CBO offers non-partisan cost and coverage estimates used by Congress. Furthermore in its analysis of the Senate bill which closely resembles the conference agreement. CBO estimated that over 85 percent of the 4 million uninsured children who ordain gain insurance under the plan are already eligible for coverage. This is the reverse of what Secretary Leavitt suggests. CLAIM: Secretary Leavitt said. “The problem we have with this is that a very large percentage some argue as much as half as many as half the children that would be added already have insurance.” FACT: CBO found that two-thirds of those who would gain coverage under the Senate SCHIP bill would otherwise be uninsured. This estimate of 33 percent “crowd out” is much less than the roughly 75 percent crowd-out estimates associated with past administration proposals to cover the uninsured that rely.

"Monroe County Adult Health Report Card Mixed" posted by ~Ray

"The survey confirms that we undergo made significant if not remarkable progress in some areas but we comfort face study problems particularly in the area of obesity." The results of a county-wide analyse released by the Monroe County Department of Public Health show that obesity and associated health problems – diabetes and hypertension – be a growing public health threat. At the same measure the survey confirms that interventions and public awareness campaigns in areas such as smoking vaccinations and colon cancer screening undergo produced positive results. “The survey provides us with a critical snap-shot of the overall health of the community and the challenges we face,” said Nancy M. Bennett. M. D.. M. S. deputy director of the Monroe County Department of Public Health and director of the ’s Center for Community Health. “And the data confirm that we have made significant if not remarkable progress in some areas but we still face major problems particularly in the area of obesity.” The Monroe County Adult analyse was conducted over the summer of 2006 and consists of telecommunicate interviews with 2,545 individuals over the age of 18 on a wide range of health topics. The measure analyse was conducted in 2000. The chew over was funded by the county the The analyse showed that the evaluate of obesity among adults has increased from 21 to 27 percent and the number of individuals diagnosed with diabetes doubled over the six year period. These trends are particularly troubling as they place these individuals at a far greater assay for a host of diseases including coronary heart disease hypertension touch and even some cancers. While the results on obesity and diabetes are cause for alarm the survey also shows that significant progress has been made in the areas such as smoking cessation colon cancer screenings and vaccinations. Bennett attributes this progress in great part to sustained and coordinated community-wide efforts to raise public awareness and change magnitude access to health services in targeted areas. These efforts consider broad partnerships among community based organizations local government faith-based organizations neighborhood associations and the region’s health systems and insurers. One example is the Racial and Ethnic Adult Disparities in Immunization Initiative or READII a schedule that has essentially erased racial disparities in adult immunization rates in and the University of Rochester Medical Center involves inner-city neighborhood health centers hospital based clinics group practices and many community organizations including Action for a Better Community (ABC). Lifespan. SouthWest Area Neighborhood Association and the Urban unify. As a result of this community-wide partnership has a strong track record of coming together and solving daunting public health problems,” said Bennett. “It is clear that we now be to apply that same focus and energy to the problem of obesity. It is my hope that this analyse will answer as a change state up label to all of us to address this epidemic in children and adults.”

"NYC Mayor Bloomberg Discusses Latest Steps In Addressing Health ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 19:17:59

"More than 400,000 people-not just New Yorkers but Americans from all 50 states-may undergo been exposed to the dust and smoke produced by the attack on the World Trade Center. The physical and mental health problems that many of them now face or may face in the future resulted from an act of war against all America. Diagnosing and treating their health problems is a national duty-and measure week saw study steps toward fulfilling that duty. "First our Administration testified on behalf of a account introduced by New York City Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Republican Congressman Vito Fossella and supported by our City's entire Congressional delegation. It would give Federal funds for investigate and treatment of 9/11 health-related conditions-research and treatment that we calculate ordain require some $150 million a year. It would also open the World Trade Center Victims Compensation Fund to those whose injuries and illnesses have emerged since eligibility for the Fund expired in 2003. This bill is vital to those whose health may have been affected by 9/11 including people from all over the nation who helped in our recovery efforts. "While federal challenge is essential. New York City isn't waiting for any outside back up. Instead the City has committed some $100 million to 9/11-health programs between now and 2011. That includes nearly $50 million for expanding Bellevue Hospital's free WTC Environmental Health Center. It's the only schedule that treats not only firefighters guard officers and rescue workers who responded to the World Trade Center attack but also all those who lived and worked in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 and during its aftermath. measure week we launched satellites of this WTC Environmental Health Center at two other public health care centers: Gouverneur Healthcare Services on the Lower East align and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens which serves an area where many workers exposed to WTC dust and smoke live. With this expansion by early next year the WTC Environmental Health Center ordain have the capacity to investigate and treat up to 20,000 people through 2011. "The need for beat long-term 9/11 health programs was underscored last week by an FDNY inform on the more than 14,000 firefighters and EMS workers who either responded to the World Trade Center attack or who took part in recovery efforts. It open that six years later many of these courageous responders have respiratory conditions or lingering mental health problems related to that terrible disaster. Clearly first-rate care is the least that our nation owes these defy men and women. "We also owe those who perished on 9/11 a fitting permanent memorial. That's why today in Pittsburgh. I'm meeting up with the National Tribute Exhibition Tour for the September 11 Memorial & Museum. The tour features a steel smile that will be move of the Memorial that ordain be built at the World change Center site. It also includes photos and artifacts that will be on display at the Museum and that re-create the story of 9/11 in all its pain and pride. The tour is set to visit 25 cities across our land. And it says a lot about Americans' shared commitment to all the unfinished work of 9/11 that since the journey began just 13 days ago it has already raised some $1 million in donations for the Memorial & Museum.
