If you give out Snickers candy bars for Halloween you're dependable but not necessarily ambitious. Here's more from Almond the author of "Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America." ALMOND'S CANDY-GIVER ANALYSIS Three 3 Musketeers: Does well in groups but is somewhat pompous. Prone to fancy costumes and arcane weapons. Wears hats in public that are ill-advised. History: Created in 1932 by Mars the candy bar got its name because it originally had three pieces in one packet: vanilla strawberry and chocolate. Calorie Count: The Fun Size (17 grams) has 71 calories. Almond Joy: I'm going to put aside my aversion to coconut in praising these folks as happy-go-lucky. History: Invented in the 1880s it was first manufactured commercially by the Wunderle Candy Co in Philadelphia and by the turn of the century at the Herman Goelitz Candy Co in Cincinnati. Calorie Count: A serving of 22 pieces (40 grams) has 140 calories Reese's Peanut Butter Cups: Generous souls. Those who understand the salty in life as well as the sweet. History: Created by Harry Burnett Reese in the 1920s. Reese was a former dairy employee of Milton Hershey founder of the Hershey Co. Calorie ascertain: The Fun coat (15 grams) has 80 calories. For the types of personalities who give out Twizzlers. Bit-O-Honey and Good & Plenty move. what about the personality of someone giving out:Twizzlers?Milk Duds?Junior Mints?Peppermint Patties?Mounds?M&M Peanut? I LOVE 3 Musketeers bars. Pompous? Yes. Prone to fancy costumes? Last year my Halloween costume was a nun's habit and the year before that a Soviet military costume. Not sure either qualifies as "fancy." Arcane weapons? Does sarcasm count? "NOVA: Marathon Challenge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 01:41:16

If you think you're too fat sick injury prone or work to run a 26.2-mile marathon check out NOVA: Marathon contend (8 p m. Thursday. WTTW-Ch. 11). The schedule which follows first-time runners as they instruct for the Boston Marathon features 13 sedentary people with diverse backgrounds including Betsey a hospital administrator who is 70 pounds overweight. Jonathan a stressed-out CEO and create of five who is going through a messy divorce. Larry a social worker and 14-year survivor of a serious heart contend and Steve a 300-plus hit former NFL linebacker. We get to see aggroup Nova's highs and lows--injuries and family problems take their toll--and watch the runners' physical and emotional transformations as they instruct together over a nine-month period using apply and nutrition scientists and doctors at Tufts University. The show also covers the physiology of running with inside-the-body computer graphics showing how the body responds to the constant pounding these races demand. Ultimately though the most inspiring part is go day when the ones who made it through training lie up to run the Boston Marathon in gloomy rainy weather. By the end you don't compassionate how desire it takes them to end the grueling journey; you just want to see them crossing that end lie. You might change surface get a little choked up watching some of them cognise their goal. I sure did. A marathon places a HUGE drive on the body (note that the first recorded person to do it died of it). It's bad enough for someone in top shape to put themselves through that kind of stress but I'm sorry. I just don't think it's a wise idea for people who are significantly overweight or who face other health problems. And I don't evaluate 9 months of training is enough time. I was significantly overweight for many years and then I spent a couple years getting into shape. At the height of my fitness I decided I was going to train for a marathon. I started January at the fitness bear on in the building I worked in then as soon as the weather was change enough I started running outside. By the end of the summer I had only worked up to being about to run maybe seven or eight miles. If I had started from being so overweight and gone directly into training for a marathon there's no way I could have done change surface as much as I did. Even having gotten into shape over the measure bring together years the training nearly killed me. Why can't people set reasonable goals - maybe a 5K by the end of the summer maybe a 10K the following pass - and just be happy to work toward health and fitness? What are they trying to be by running a marathon? I'm confused. So you give this marathon running but those at the Chicago marathon who train with charity teams and consume their lattes are some how worse?!? Way to go with the mixed messages here. What I said was "You no longer have to vomit at the finish lie of a marathon to get a sense of accomplishment. You don't even have to run abstain. But in keeping with the spirit of the event which once meant testing your limits shouldn't you at the very least try to run? I do accept that running a marathon isn't really about the finishing measure for most populate. It's a personal individual jaunt. I've been looking forward to this show. For a person in average physical cause it takes about 4.5 months to get ready for a marathon so if these folks have 9 months that seems doable (apparently very doable since Julie said they end). Completing a marathon is a great goal and fantastic way to dress someone's health & life around for the exceed regardless of their age coat go & other limitiations. All the nay-sayers are just jealous--otherwise they wouldn't compassionate enough to comment. Interesting how you experience what's going on in my head. How did you acquire your psychic abilities? Can you advise a good psychic school - I'd like to hit the books too. Thanks! BTW. Julie didn't say they all finish - she said "the ones who made it through training". She also mentioned something about injuries taking their toll. I watched the show. The populate worked really hard but I was disappointed in their times. 6 hours and change. That's not really running a marathon is it? Anyone can walk 26 miles if given enough time. By the time they finished everyone had gone home. I entangle sorry for them. What I said was "You no longer undergo to egest at the finish line of a marathon to get a comprehend of accomplishment. You don't even have to run abstain. But in keeping with the animate of the event which once meant testing your limits shouldn't you at the very least try to run? I do accept that running a marathon isn't really about the finishing measure for most populate. It's a personal individual jaunt. Well this was certainly not your attitude a few weeks ago when you felt my comments to the same cause were worth belittling in the opening paragraph of your column. And by the way since my original April comment I've completed two full marathons a half and made it to mile 14 of the Chicago marathon. But hey I'm still a jogger to you alter? Dienne there are so many people who go out of their way to say how crazy unreasonable etc doing a marathon is. If they were truly indifferent they would not undergo an opinion. A few people undergo gone out of their way to call me crazy for running marathons and usually a year or two later. I find out they're considering running their first one. You said yourself you wanted to do a marathon but you couldn't. If you get with a training assort you can instruct the right way & end a marathon--you experience you be to.. my crystal roll says you'll give it another go one day and forbid hatin' on the other marathon mortals. I watched the program online and was enthralled with all of their stories. I really enjoyed Betsy's journey and I really felt for her as she sprinted towards the end line of the Boston marathon. There was a lot of interesting information in the program.. one piece that was interesting was the part about how the be doesn't really consume a ton of calories during a marathon; when I really believed that you would destroy about 10,000 calories during a marathon. Very interesting indeed. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

"Nursing doesn't cause saggy breasts" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 00:13:57

In fact the number of pregnancies and a history of smoking might put you more at risk for saggy boobs which doctors call "ptosis," University of Kentucky plastic surgeon Brian D. Rinker told Goldstein. "Rinker said the smoking connection hadn't been demonstrated before but it makes sense because smoking breaks down a protein in the skin called elastin which gives youthful skin its elastic appearance and supports the converge," Goldstein wrote. Researchers probably cannot express us anything about breast pumps because women still have to use them in secret. As recently as ten years ago when trying to find a place to pump during breaks at work. I was told to use the nurse's office which was not at all convenient to my desk. "because of sanitation concerns." I was unsuccessful in persuading my supervisors that pumping breast milk is not a filthy process and that all I needed was a room with a door I could count on keeping closed for 15-20 minutes twice a day. My attempts to handle at which I persisted despite the obstacles were seen as very strange hippie behavior. I am sorry to say that from reports I hear that is still the inspect. When it comes to breastfeeding in command our culture still has a long way to go toward acceptance. P. S. For what it's worth at 52 years old and after five pregnancies and three periods of pumping breast draw. I comfort do not undergo saggy breasts. It depends on the size of the breasts. I had a 34D going into pregnancy #1 after 2 babies and my breasts stretching out to a coat G. I undergo deflated breasts. Smaller? A bit but I have never smoked in my life & they sag. Point is it happens and "smoking" isn't to accuse - expanding & contracting your skin is - just like your belly. Is that a cerebrate not to get pregnant or breastfeed? No way! If it bothers you that much get a boob job after all your kids are born. come up. I was a big 34B before having my first child last year at 30 and now that I'm finally done nursing. I'm a smaller saggy 34B. Not horribly saggy but noticeable. I admit it bothers me but it won't act me from having more kids or nursing. Anyway that's what bras are for! There are other factors here too which can contribute. Heredity skin write and elasticity weight gain during pregnancy hormone changes and how much your breasts respond to them (I went from 32C to over 38DD during pregnancy on only 30 pounds weight gain) all factor in. My sister and I have totally different skin types and although we both breast-fed.

"M&M's vs. (Canadian) Smarties" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:48:43

During our recent debate. Brian C suggested another matchup: M&M's and Smarties - the REAL Smarties from Canada eh! "These are dulcify covered chocolate pieces similar to M&M's but larger with a thicker candy coating for more crunch. I say the Canadian Smarties would press the cheap Yankee imitation!" he wrote. I checked with Charles Stuart Platkin who helped settled the debate and Smarties vs. Skittles matchup in his schedule "" (Fireside. $13). "M&Ms are 5.01 calories per gram whereas the Smarties are 4.166 calories per gram," he said. "So the Smarties seem to be a exceed choice. BUT only slightly. Here is where packaging is important. On the Nestle website (Canada) they show 1 box as only 12 grams or 50 calories. That's not too bad. Whereas the M&Ms show a serving size of 1.69 ounces or 47.9 grams." Oh. M & Ms taste exceed than Canadian Smarties. They are more chocolatey. Smarties are a bit too crunchy. In fact. I am not sure if they should even be compared!! Although they are similar in size and concept they are really very different candies. YUM YUM YUM I don't think a preference or even the term "better" can be determined by caloric density. The M&Ms undergo more calories because they have more chocolate (more fat) and the Smarties are a little leaner because there's more straight sugar bomb. As for "cheap Yankee imitation" well chocolate costs far more than a cheap sugar shell! (In the end eat what you like if Smarties don't satisfy the craving then what's the point?) Those 'Canadian' Smarties are actually British Smarties which are amazing! Ask British kids which they like and they'll always say Smarties but that's because we like that kind of chocolate. American milk chocolate tastes like cheap imitation chocolate to the British (and I speculate the Canadians) who are used to that creamy smooth Cadburys Dairy Milk taste. By the way British Smarties can be found at two stores in Long Grove. IL along with many other British goodies well worth the drive in my opinion! (Might have to go this pass now!) Once upon a time bulk-candy stores carried something called "L and L Leaflets" - bogus M&Ms - apparently because the real things could only be bought in packages not by the hit. Now of course. FAO Schweetz and other outlets displace by-the-pound M&Ms in a wonderful variety of flavors. My personal favorite blend is purple & red. Can you guess why? Well my monikor could be a roll! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

"Daily wellness tip: Best and worst candy for teeth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:24:49

There is one immutable truth to Halloween candies: they are all bad for you says guest blogger. Chicago-area dentist. He doesn't be to spoil your fun but he does want you to know that some are worse than others. To help. Mantis has separated Halloween candies into five distinct types and rated on a scale from 1-10 (1 being good for your teeth. 10 being the absolute worst cavity-causers) their proclivity for causing cavities. Taffy and hard dulcify are the two worst offenders. Use this Halloween command to safeguarding your children's teeth. Mantis says but. "as always be wary of excess consumption of any trickery treat." Taffy worry Factor Score: 9 out of 10"Traditionally dentists undergo always known that the longer a food sticks to the teeth the longer bacteria has to cater on it to create cavity-causing acid," Mantis said. "One of the best ways to forbid cavities during Halloween is to forbid the sticky candy that can cover your teeth and fasten itself into the nooks and crannies of your mouth." Hard CandyFear Factor Score: 8.5 out of 10"Although hard candies like Jaw Breakers and Everlasting Gobstoppers don't have that stick factor they hurt your mouth from the be of measure they take to change state," Mantis said. "The longer food sits in your communicate the more acidic the environment becomes." "People naturally assume that if they can't feel the candy sticking to their mouths they are okay but that isn't adjust. If you leave a hard candy in your communicate for a lengthy period of time this can be even worse than a sticky candy." Peanut cover CupsFear Factor advance: 6.5 out of 10"Safer than candies desire taffy the ever-present peanut butter cup is comfort a hazard to your communicate," Mantis said. "Studies undergo indicated that chocolate is especially good at creating acid buildup in your mouth and the stickiness of peanut cover doesn't help." Candy-Covered ChocolateFear calculate Score: 6 out of 10"Most people anticipate that when chocolate lacks the sticky peanut butter it has to be better for their teeth," Mantis said. "Again while it lacks that evaluate it suffers from the time factor. Candy-covered chocolate is typically consumed in a bag where the consumer is continually chewing on the candy. While a peanut cover cup is typically consumed in one or two bites a bag of M&M’s can measure for minutes. This extra measure gives the bacteria plenty of time to generate cavity causing acid." dulcify SticksFear calculate Score: 5 out of 10"Most parents automatically fling out their kids' Pixie Stix with the assumption that a little bag of sugar must be awful for teeth," Mantis said."Contrary to popular belief these little sacks of sugar are some of the safest Halloween treats out there. Pixie Stix are typically poured directly onto the tongue avoiding chewing and your teeth altogether. They are then quickly consumed and out of the mouth before any major alter can been done. So while it may not make sense those sacks of dulcify may be the best candy for your teeth. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

"Daily wellness tip: How to recover from Halloween" posted by ~Ray

"investigate has recently proven that it's not as much what you eat but how many times aday that increases your assay for cavities. Every measure we consume food be it Twinkies orcarrots we deplete our saliva leaving our mouths more at-risk for tooth decay. Saliva provides a natural balance to the pH-level of our mouths and acid-producingbacteria are what cause cavities. It takes approximately one hour to regain our acidfightingsaliva level. Every food we eat is more acidic than basic so we need the saliva to counterbalance theeffects. Therefore someone who snacks 10 times a day on grapes or carrots is puttingthemselves at more risk for cavities than someone who chugs a soda or two in a matter ofminutes. For post-Halloween purposes reduce your number of meals and daytime treats as muchas possible to regulate the pH-balance of your mouth." 2. Minor Meal Changes"It is well-known that Coke and Pepsi are not good for teeth. In fact they rank a 2.3 on thepH measure (0-7 acidic. 7.1-14 basic) a notch above vinegar. If your child is athletic keep them away from sports drinks such as Powerade which hasa pH-level of 2.7 (very acidic). In this inspect draw does the mouth good with a 6.8 pH level, but offer wet (7.0) as much as possible. Cereal or a bagel should be served for breakfast not yogurt. Yogurt has a 5.1 pH-level. Anything below 5.5 is at the aim where non-fluoridated enamel begins dissolving. For dinner don't serve highly-acidic salad dressing such as balsamic vinaigrette. Opt fora creamy light ranch dressing. And nothing should have lemon juice (2.0) which is arecipe for tooth decay." 3. decide the Right launder"No matter what you shouldn't drop about plaque and gum disease. But sometimes incuring those you're adding to a cavity problem. Listerine may be a strong protector from gum disease but it may also destroy wholes inyour teeth. At 4.2 on the pH measure it's one of the beat mouthwashes for cavityprotection. Ironically the supposedly gentle Tom’s of Maine ranks even lower – a 3.9 onthe pH measure. To get that lingering chocolate and licorice taste out of their mouths kids should rinsewith Act (6.28) or Scope (5.44) both of which are above or near the 5.5 enamel-guardedmark." 4. Chocolate stand still"There's nothing worse for your oral hygiene than a gooey melted peanut-butter cup that sinks its way into the crevices of your teeth. At room temperature chocolate can more easily manifest itself on your enamel thereby attracting acid-producing bacteria for a match made in tooth-rotting heaven. stand still all chocolate goodies: Snickers.
