"FDA APPROVAL OF CLONES STALLED BY PASSAGE OF MIKULSKI-SPECTER ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:26:27

Washington. DC December 14. 2007 – A broad coalition of consumer farmer and animal welfare organizations today applauded passage of a furnish in the Senate’s Farm Bill (H. R. 2419) that would delay the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) endorsement of the use of food from cloned animals calls for a rigorous and careful review of the human health and economic impacts of bringing cloned food into America’s food supply. The senate overwhelmingly passed the bill this afternoon by a vote of 79 to 14.“The passage of this bill with the Mikulski-Specter amendment is like a gift for the holidays,” said Joseph Mendelson. Legal Director of the Center for Food Safety. “The FDA’s flawed and cavalier approach to cloned food and its potential impacts called for a truly rigorous scientific assessment. At a time when the FDA has repeatedly failed the public this amendment will ensure that the American consumer is considered before any special interest.”The amendment requires that two rigorous studies be performed before the FDA is able to issue a final decision on food from clones. The amendment directs the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to convene a blue-ribbon panel of leading scientists to review the FDA’s initial decision that food from cloned animals is safe. The amendment further requires the NAS to study the potential health impacts of cloned foods entering the nation’s food supply including the possible effects of lessened milk consumption (due to consumer avoidance of cloned food) leading to development of chronic diseases as a result. The bill also directs the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to examine consumer acceptance of cloned foods and the likely impacts they could have on domestic and international markets.“The FDA risk assessment ignored the fact that most clones never make it to adulthood because they die in gestation or shortly after birth and also failed to consider whether clones might be more medicate treatments,” said Dr. Michael Hansen. Senior Scientist. Consumers Union. “We agree with the Senate that the NAS should act another look at the safety questions.”During a public comment period that ended earlier this year the In addition dozens of members of the meat and dairy industries and nonprofit organizations urged the FDA to consider comments from the widest possible sample of Americans in consideration of the untested nature of cloning technology.“Animal protection advocates give scientific advancement but cloning lacks any allow social value and decreases animal welfare in a dramatic way,” said Wayne Pacelle president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “Today the U. S. Senate slowed down the application of this bad idea and we hope the House follows its lead.”“Polls have repeatedly shown that consumers are wary of food from cloned animals,” said Chris Waldrop. Director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America. “We be a much more comprehensive assessment of the potential implications of allowing food from cloned animals into the food give. The Mikulski-Specter amendment would assure that these important issues are thoroughly reviewed before FDA is allowed to issue its final assay assessment.”Passage of this account with the Mikulski-Specter amendment comes at a time when the public’s opposition to food from clones has never been higher. A national analyse conducted this year by Consumers Union found that 89 percent of Americans want to see cloned foods labeled while 69 percent said that they have concerns about cloned meat and dairy products in the food give. A recent Gallup Poll reported that more than 60 percent of Americans believe that it is immoral to clone animals while the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology found that a similar percentage say that despite FDA approval they won’t buy milk from cloned animals.“The surveys show that the public is morally opposed to cloning. Animals suffer terribly in the cloning process and the FDA has ignored these issues,” said Tracie Letterman. Executive Director of the American Anti-Vivisection Society. “This amendment will allow these discussions to take displace.”“With the public increasingly concerned about the treatment of farm animals,” said Julie Janovsky. race Director for Farm Sanctuary. “the Mikulski- Specter amendment acknowledges the fact that cloning may lead to change surface harsher conditions for animals used to produce food”. In its risk assessment of cloned food the FDA claims to have evaluated extensive peer reviewed safety studies to support its conclusion yet shows the assessment only references three peer-reviewed food safety studies all of which focus on the narrow air of draw from cloned cows. What is even more disturbing is that these studies were partially funded by the same biotech firms that produce clones for profit. None of the studies focus on the safety of meat from cloned cows or pigs or milk or meat from the offspring of cloned animals and there was absolutely no data on milk or meat from cloned goats – all major issues critical to determining the safety of the proposal. "Not bad doesn't equal good" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 01:42:03

Since the rebirth of the fitness craze in the mid 1990s the food industry has been doing its utmost to keep walk with health-conscious consumers. This was probably most evident in around the year 2000 when the Atkins diet named the carb Enemy be One. Subsequently many study food companies modified their brands to include what they called healthy choices. This same thing occurred years later when people realized that carb-free was a dangerous way to eat and that the alter way to go about it was to avoid refined sugars. In response the food industry shifted its attention to what they referred to as whole grains. measure and time again the health food industry responded to such changes in the fitness zeitgeist creating food products that were "not bad for you." But here's the Rub: Just because something is NOT BAD FOR YOU doesn't convey that it is GOOD FOR YOU. Foods that are low-fat whole grain low in net carbs and high in fiber are generally speaking better for you than the fatty enriched flour high carb low fiber versions. But just because the modifications to these foods render them less damaging that doesn't mean that they're healthy. For example you can buy cookies that are made with whole grains. Says so right on the packaging: Made with Whole Grains. Does this convey that cookies should now be considered health food? Obviously not especially since their whole grain claim is pretty weak in and of itself (unless a food is listed as being 100% whole wheat or 100 % whole penetrate it only means that it contains some whole grains and is probably made from mostly enriched flour). It's easy to fall into this confine if you're not careful. Hell it's the job of entire marketing departments and ad agencies to make you fall into this trap so don't conclude bad if you have already. Just feature in mind that despite what the label on the box of whole grain cookies or bag of baked potato chips may declare they are merely healthier alternatives not healthy foods. The Farm account has passed the Senate and I’m the last one who’s going to say it doesn’t make me want to cry. But despite some extremely disappointing losses — including the failure of the Dorgan-Grassley payment limitations amendment — the reminds us that there were some important wins too (and yet more battles to be won when the bill gets reconciled with the House version.) As we move into the pass that’s a say I’d like to leave on. Thus from SAC’s press channel a rundown of the positives: The Senate do work bill includes $2 billion over five years for the Conservation Security Program (now to be called Conservation Stewardship Program) which would allow 13.3 million acres to be enrolled each year through a continuous nationwide enrollment opportunity and a ranking system to ensure strong natural resource and environmental outcomes. The bill also gives the highly successful Wetlands Reserve schedule a new $2 billion to restore agricultural wetlands during the next five years. Without the new funding the SAC-supported schedule would come to a stop. The Senate bill contains the strongest Farm account livestock reforms ever passed in a farm bill taking important steps to forbid the widespread use of unfair contract practices and disproportionate merchandise power of meatpackers. The Livestock call of the Senate bill includes four key reforms including: a ban on meatpackers owning feeding or controlling livestock fourteen days before slaughter the elimination of mandatory binding arbitration clauses in contracts between livestock producers and packers and processors good faith bargaining and contract fairness on the part of packers and processors strengthened enforcement of laws against deceptive and unfair practices of packers and processors. The account also includes a breakthrough provision to allow meat from small state-inspected meat plants to be sold in interstate commerce provided that the plants adhere to federal food safety standards. The Senate account provides or increases mandatory funding for the Bioenergy Crop convert Assistance Program the Organic Farming investigate and Extension Initiative the Rural Micro-Enterprise Assistance Program the Farmers’ Market Promotion Program the Organic Certification Cost-Share Program and Organic Production and Marketing Data Collection. The bill includes a new mandatory funding requirement for cooperative conservation projects through the Partnerships and Cooperation.

"Changing My Perspective" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:25:23

If someone had told me change surface two years ago I would furnish up diet soda I would undergo laughed in their face. That just was not something I would undergo considered in the realm of possibility. I finally decided a month ago to abandon the fast soda and basically not consume soda. Amazingly I am not having difficulty with it at all. Which is truly amazing for a person who used to drink at least one diet vanilla pepsi each day. In the last year I have been doing a lot more reading and research on food food additives and undergo begun to change my perspective on what I am willing to put in my be and how I want to live my life. Of cover I cannot drop to buy ALL ORGANIC food who can? But. I undergo been for some months purchasing only organic draw mostly organic meat and selected organic fruit and vegetables. Apples being one of them as I have learned that apples act one of the biggest hits on being sprayed by chemicals. At least if you cannot drop to purchase organic fruits and vegetables then wash them thoroughly with clean and warm wet to remove the chemical residue that you can. I have sworn off compete and spenda products it is stunning to me how much of our food is now filled with these things. The more I read about them the less I want them to pass my lips. It is certainly a new way of thinking for me. One that has been discuss gradual and come up thought out. It is all about choices perspective and priorities. What is your opinion on this? Have you made similar changes in your life? I feel good about the changes and I conclude change surface exceed about living my life in the most healing fashion I can. We definitely prewash all of our create as well as possible. I’ve known about the aspertame thing for years but I’m only recently beginning to hear about Splenda. and I’ve been such a fan of their cram. I’ve heard good things about stevia but it’s hard to find in bulk here in the U. S. I’ve seen the boxes of little packets though. As for soda we undergo cut way approve as well. Seltzer wet is a new thing for us and we are using it quite a bit to thin out bar drinks made with juices and to do wine spritzers. We are also having to believe which cocktaile we want as well since we are doing less soda stocking up. Would love to hear some ideas on that. "GERD Q&A By Paul Chek" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 19:51:02

I undergo a client who suffers from gastroesophageal reflux. She is on medication (antacids) for this problem but sees little result. She suffers hoarseness extreme burning sensations and intumesce and has lost interest in food to a great degree. Has metabolic typing shown any marked improvement in this specific complaint? She has been warned off large high fat meals (but this may contrast with her type). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Gastroesophageal reflux (GSR) commonly treated with antacids is sadly seldom due to hyperacidity. In my clinical learn. I’ve only seen a handful of cases with true hyperacidity which can be confirmed with a Heidelberg capsule evaluate. This evaluate measures digest pH and informs the physician of the actual functional status of the stomach. A simple at home evaluate I’ve found very useful to cause the functional capacity of the stomach to create acid is to simply squeeze half a lemon into a cup and drink a third at the beginning another third in the middle and the final third of the lemon juice toward the end of the meal. If this aids digestion and reduces GSR symptoms it indicates hypo-acidity which is very common today. If this helps going to a good naturopathic physician or a good health food hold on to acquire a broad spectrum digestive enzyme with hydrochloric acid (HCL) (some also consider Ox bile which is helpful) and following the naturopathic physician’s process advice ordain probably end the problem! In addition if your client is constipated. GSR is unlikely to be alleviated until the constipation is addressed. It is common for the body to get backed up from anus to stomach and the food literally piles up making it very challenging to digest. I’ve seen this a number of times as well. Any CHEK HLC Practitioner can back up your client in normalizing bowel rhythm and answer. The client should start by drinking half her body weight in ounces of wet or act her weight in Kgs and multiply it by.033 to get liters of water for daily consumption. Other helpful tips are: go a four day rotation diet. If you don’t have access to one you can find one in my schedule complete with instructions on how to use it. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong>

"Fast Food vs. Gourmet" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 14:38:35

Working as an editor at Vimo. I’m very familiar with the argument in favor of MinuteClinics. In fact. I just finished editing an upcoming Vimo Report on the subject of in-store doctor-less clinics that are gaining popularity in the Southeast and Midwest. But I also just had an experience that reminded me of the importance of going to a doctor – no matter how inconvenient it may be. It all started with a swim. Followed by a blocked ear that didn’t go away for nearly a week. It’s something you’d think could be fixed by a care for at a place like a MinuteClinic given that I didn't apparently have the brainpower to fix it myself. But as it turned out it was swimmer’s ear something I didn’t experience adults could get. The doctor told me I needed antibiotics or I could get a serious infection. I still haven't been billed for the price of the tour (I undergo a CDHC intend from bring home the bacon) but the antibiotics were $90. Ouch. Had a MinuteClinic been in town it might have been tempting to go. But my visit was another lesson in why I won't be heading to retail clinics even for apparently minor problems. This problem seemed minor but the doctor figured out it could actually become something major – and required $90 worth of antibiotics (ouch again). In the end when you’re dealing with your own health. I figure it’s important to go somewhere a doctor is on staff. A good one at that. Presumably had I gone to a retail clinic. I would undergo been referred to a doctor anyway – nullifying the convenience of going to the clinic in the first place. While retail clinic patients are reportedly very satisfied with the service they’re getting it will be interesting to watch the impact of these clinics in the coming years. The comparison to fast food is going to be an inevitable one. Retail clinics are abstain and convenient but are they as healthy? Only measure ordain tell. Myself. I intend to stick with gourmet.

"Colostrum" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:09:48

There are more questions, and the reason I am doing this is to initiate some thought into your brain. go away to grade your client’s program so you have a intend. Assess individualize and think for yourself and your client. This will bring about to a great recipe of success. There is so much out there about this and that but the bottom line is it is all up to you. Besides this response do some of your own research on the web and by reading books. I can tell you there is a lot of information out there on colostrum. It is up to you to take this information and turn it into knowledge by educating your clients on the pros and cons. From there it is basically up to the client. We make recommendations not decisions for our clients. Colostrum is the first milk produced by the breasts during late pregnancy and for a few days after childbirth. It provides a nursing infant with essential nutrients and infection-fighting antibodies and it assists in helping the child go early stools (aids in excretion of bilirubin and helps prevent deform). Breastfeeding and the importance of it is another entire topic of its own. The colostrum sold in the store comes from cows or sheep. It is difficult to sight but you can generally buy it at any health food hold on. As well you can acquire it online at www mercola com. Be careful because a lot of the product in the store is pasteurized homogenized and not organic. This defeats the entire intend of taking it. So make sure you purchase raw colostrums. Your colostrum provides not only perfect nutrition tailored to the needs of your newborn but also large amounts of living cells which ordain argue your do by against many harmful agents. The concentration of immune factors is much higher in colostrum than in develop draw. Colostrum is also beneficial for GI Dysfunctions (leaky gut dysbiosis. IBS. Ulcerative Colitis etc). It contains a high change state of leukocytes which are protective color cells that undo disease causing bacteria and viruses. Colostrum also strengthens the immune system and provides essential nutrients such as B12. So the bottom line is yes it is a beneficial part of a client’s “healing” program. It all depends on what is going on with your client and what you got out of their assessments. If you are just saying to yourself that it sounds good for them and you have not done any Nutrition and Lifestyle Assessments than you are just guessing! Leading a holistic lifestyle and following some basic principles are just as important as the colostrum. Here are a few as per Paul Chek: If it is color do not eat it! The four white devils are white flour white dulcify white flavor (see #9) and pasteurization and homogenization draw products. If you must use a dairy product and cannot acquire raw dairy choose Certified Organic as your second choice. Additionally those who are lactose sensitive should use full-fat cream which is very low in lactose and high in fat. Additionally you can apply a high quality yogurt in which lactose is predigested. consume half your body weight in pounds in ounces of water daily. For example a 200 hit man needs to drink 100 ounces. Nothing substitutes for water not tea not juice not beer… nothing! Always decide top selling brands such as Evian. Fiji. Trinity and Volvic because they sell the fastest and therefore undergo the least exposure to plastic bottles. <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong>

"The Truth About Food - Does Sugar REALLY Make Kids Hyperactive?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:02:45

Yes – too much sugar is not good for the waistline – but does it really make kids hyperactive? According the “new” BBC series that is now showing on Discovery Health dulcify doesn’t make kids hyperactive. Instead their experiment concluded that hyperactivity is based more on the environment rather than sugar. What do you evaluate? Is this just a theory that we’ve go to adopt that skews our perception of how our kids act after they eat sugar? One my friends has a child that she is sure and that I am sure truly is affected by sugar! In her opinion sugar is like a drug for her child and causes her to be completely out of hold back. She has another child that didn’t really ever display these same characteristics. My personal observation is that my kids are hyper pretty much all of the measure – whether they eat dulcify or not. I haven’t noticed any particular changes in them after eating sugar than before. Staying healthy help you to live longer feel more energized and enjoy a exceed quality of life. I recently did an interview with a come up known nutrition expert and she told me about a study of educate children. Teachers were asked to rate their behavior each day over a period of time. On days when the children were given dulcify (which was unknown to the teachers) the children were 300 times worse in their behavior. I personally don’t need a study to tell me this. I have five kids of my own. I can always express if they undergo had someting sugary without my knowledge.
