"White Privilege and Black Mental Health" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:30:01

(Engraving of a slave committing suicide)Hey!I'm up and about and off that twilight/anesthesia combo they had me on. And the nurse with whom I had the Hitler/Barack conversation called me this morning to alter sure I was OK. LOL yes. I know it's part of her job but I thought that was nice. So anyway. I construe an article over at and there was a comment that stuck with me:“If Obama gets in it’s going to be a color thing and it’s going to be all blacks for blacks,” said Victoria Mikulski a 63-year-old clerk in Edison Park. “Everything’s got to be equal.”I wondered if this was in some way a color person acknowledging the existence of white privilege. If a Black president would mean Blacks get preferential treatment then it follows that the 40-odd white presidents in our nation's history must have overseen a system that was beneficial to whites. Most Black people would say. "Duh tell me something I don't know," but I think color privilege is still unacknowledged by the add up white person. White privilege doesn't mean every white person in America gets a pony; it means those basic human rights on which this country was founded are the default setting for most color people. When those rights are something someone has to fight for rather than something that comes with being born real damage is done to a person's mental health. For example:*a study showed that people who felt victimized by discrimination and forms of racism were twice as likely to develop psychotic episodes in the next three years*a group of Harvard researchers documented that a mere 1% change magnitude in incidences of racial disrespect translates to an increase in 350 deaths per 100,000 African Americans*in childhood there are no differences between black and white blood pressure rates but in the 25-44 year-old group this changes. There is evidence that in whites blood pressure drops at night but not in black people(from )*Blacks are over diagnosed for psychosis and paranoid schizophrenia but under diagnosed for depressionEven when you alter for socioeconomic level these disparities still exist. Psychiatrist Alvin Poussaint suggests the has been passed down through the generations as he notes that slaves suffered from "depression anger hypervigilance anxiety," and the effects of that legacy are still felt today. Journalist John Head says everyone pays a price for neglecting color mental health: "Untreated depression erodes our ability to encourage our children. The `cures' have been neglect or isolation in prison."But Ms. Mikulski and others desire her probably aren't enslaving lynching or selling off anybody's children to the Deep South so what are Blacks responding to? Just saying white privilege is too easy an answer but it's a start. In anti-racist activist Peggy McIntosh's she lists 50 run-of-the-mill daily benefits of being white. Here are just a few:*I can go shopping alone most of the time pretty well assured that I ordain not be followed or harassed.*I can turn on the television or open to the front summon of the paper and see people of my race widely represented.*When I am told about our national heritage or about "civilization," I am shown that people of my color made it what it is.*Whether I use checks credit cards or cash. I can count on my skin color not to work against the appearance of financial reliability.*I do not have to educate my children to be aware of systemic racism for their own daily physical protection.*I can do well in a challenging situation without being called a credit to my race.*I am never asked to speak for all the people of my racial group.*I can criticize our government and talk about how much I worry its policies and behavior without being seen as a cultural outsider.*I can take a job with an affirmative action employer without having my co-workers on the job suspect that I got it because of my race.*I can be sure that if I need legal or medical help my race will not work against me.*I will feel welcomed and "normal" in the usual walks of public life institutional and social. Confronting racial micro-inequities like these day in and day out can feature a body down. The funny thing is. I think Ms. Mikulski and 'nem know this on a deeper level thus the fear of a new sheriff in town. Where does that come from--the belief that if Blacks had a chance to run things we'd jump at the chance to mistreat whites rather than level the playing field for every person regardless of race creed sexual orientation gender or able-bodiedness?I've always held that it took Blacks to make America become the nation it intended to be. Any cozen could've written But the constant presence of Black skin--cleaning your house working your fields and yes warming your beds--forced America to act an agonizingly desire look at whether or not those words were really true. And every patriot who loves this country (and I count myself among them; all it took was one African dance class to know I couldn't have made it in Senegal) should want those words to be true. For everybody. Shouldn't they?I'm all over the place. Just some thoughts. Kelleybelle,All over the place? NO On aim? Yes. Nice post. It's a shame that white America is thinking we are lying in wait to get our chance to strike at them. It makes me wonder that they do know how hard they have treated us over all these years. But we are not that kind of populate wish they knew that. OBAMA 08 I liked this post. When I used to work at a department hold on in college I had a security guard friend who would generally monitor all the Black customers wandering around the store. Meanwhile well-dressed white ladies were stealing up a storm and didn't get caught until they had practically cleaned out half the inventory.

"Indigenous health group highlights Opal fuel benefits" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 01:45:29

An Aboriginal health group in South Australia's northern Aboriginal lands says the latest statistics released by the State Government show the benefits of the introduction of Opal fuel. An independent survey suggests a 46 per cent drop in petrol sniffing on the Anangu Pitjantjatjarra Yunkatjatjarra (APY) lands last year alone. Paul Torzillo from the Nganampa Health Council in the northern lands says it would be foolish to think the problem could be completely eradicated but it has been significantly reduced. "I've certainly seen initiatives that have reduced petrol sniffing for a while but they've tended to be fairly bunco lived and then the sniffing has re-emerged," he said. "But I think in the last three years this looks to be sustainable and I evaluate the thing that's most identifiable is the introduction of Opal fuel. "SCHIP Debate Shows Democrats Are Winning the War of Words" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 00:20:50

With the ongoing help of the “mainstream media,” the Democrats act to win the war of words. They fasten to their talking points desire attach on a rug. The president has stated again that he ordain contradict the Democrats’ version of the State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) but the public rarely hears the reasons. Namely the Democrats’ proposal more than doubles the cost by expanding eligibility to not just poor families but to families making $82,000 a year. Some of us call that middle class which is government subsidized health insurance through the approve door. The liberal Democrats see nothing wrong with subsidizing health insurance for the middle class just as they see nothing wrong with the Social Security system. Medicare. Medicaid or out-of-control government spending in general. That’s because they see nothing wrong with eventually taxing every dime we earn or leaving an impossible debt load to our grandchildren. Democrats have achieved educational welfare where teachers get more money but their product can hardly read write or do math. Once again the Democrats are pushing more welfare in the create of HillaryCare……the product from this huge new Bureaucracy will not really back up anyone other than the insurance companies. Ms. Clinton is obsessed with big government and that is Socialism… only the elite will go come up for a bunco time before this great Nation becomes Third World. What is so hard for the Democrats to see in other failed socialist nations…. they really are…………….. My response is what has the healthcare system doctors surgeons medicate companies and etc done to decrease the costs. My daughter stayed at a hospital for 72 hours in request to monitor her brainwaves on an EEG machine to catch any seizures. If I did not have insurance my medical bill would be $ 23,000. Tough to express Americans that healthcare is really expensive because the costs of bringing it to them is high and the profit margins are VERY tight thus high costs are necessary while the announcer is sitting in a glass/steel palatial corporate HQ or living in a huge MacMansion. The best way to defeat socialism is thru leadership by example and cost reduction by the proponents of capitalism. act living in palatial palaces work in palatial offices undergo palatial salaries and then cry that prices cannot be reduced because the acquire margins are too tight kinda blows the PR race down the tubes and give every leftist.

"Reality Based Community" posted by ~Ray

Denise Bren’s voice trembled as she stood in a city lay near her home to ask Sen. Barack Obama what he would do to help populate like her struggling to pay their bills. “From the cost of gas to the be of a dozen eggs the price keeps going up and the wages don’t,” she said. “I’m in a family of two and can’t create by mental act what it does to a family of four or more.” Skipping any expression of sympathy for Bren’s personal vow on a day when he was focused on the Iraq war. Obama (D-Ill.) launched into a detailed six-point intend outlining the economic policies he would change as president. As thoughtful as his response was that recent morning touching on everything from annual minimum-wage increases to pension protection it left the 52-year-old cold. “He tried to answer my question but also was leery in a way to get into it and feel somebody’s pain,” said Bren who is unemployed never finished college and is leaning toward supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N. Y.). Pollsters label Bren and those desire her “beer-track” voters while those with higher incomes and more education are dubbed “wine-track” voters. The first group tends to care more about pocketbook issues. The second places greater value on more global matters. A Gallup survey meanwhile recently reported that Obama is highly competitive with Clinton among the most-educated segment of the celebrate. But he lags among those who have had some college or less. “At least one candidate has exhibited a copy similar to Obama’s educational skew in each election cycle since 1988 but that candidate usually does not end up winning the Democratic presidential nomination,” Gallup said. Working-class voters traditionally have been the bedrock of Democratic primaries. They are a key reason Clinton leads in many state and national polls mirroring the support her preserve enjoyed with the group. “Hillary’s strength is in traditional Democratic strongholds and that is the beer track,” said J. Ann Selzer who conducts the Iowa Poll for The Des Moines enter. “She is sort of the solid institutional Democratic candidate.” The need for Obama to appear more working-class is perhaps reflected in the periodic inclusion in his stump speech of a recent experience helping a union health-care worker as move of the Service Employees International Union’s “Walk a Day in My Shoes” program for candidates. “I went with her to work that day and we made his bed and helped him get dressed and we scrubbed the floors and made him eat and cleaned the accommodate and did the laundry,” Obama recently told an audience. “I undergo to say it was one of the best days I undergo had on the race so far.” Still after a hard day’s work. Obama seems to like wine to beer. In another divide of his amaze speech he recalls a recent decision to tour a remote South Carolina town with relatively few voters to woo a state legislator’s endorsement. And here comes the whine. Obama and to a lesser extent Edwards has built his failing race under the delusion that students will give Obama at the polls. To that end Obama held his super-rallies geared to a youth audience and in some cases solely with the college networking place Facebook subscribers as the collect organizers. The Obama strategy is in conflict with the current primary calendar. If the primary plan keeps moving earlier and earlier the universities and colleges of Iowa and New Hampshire will be on pass when the voting takes place. None of this can come as a affect to the Obama campaign. But they have been silent on the issues relating to the calendar. We suspect that as their campaign collapses they will sight in the calendar the ready forgive they will need. They will whine that the schedule robbed them of their organizers and voters. In Iowa they ordain bark that there is no way to assemble absentee. Depending on how the calendar finally settles students ordain have to end whether to return early to or be late in the icy Jack Frost states of Iowa and New Hampshire. Obama of course thinks he is the sun to the youth vote. The likelihood is that Cancun and Daytona ordain be a more seductive destination for winter break than canvassing for a lusterless former fad candidate. The doomsday scenario for organizers at Iowa express and UNI is if the caucuses are rescheduled for before Jan. 14. Iowa Democratic Party leaders undergo said they would move the assemble date up if other states challenge Iowa’s leadoff status. If that happens most students would be in their hometowns some of them in other states. [snip] At the University of Iowa where students don’t get approve until Jan.22 organizers hope students ordain end their break a week early. Students who live off campus can go back whenever they want. On-campus some residence halls are change state during the end and some aren’t. Scott County Auditor Karen Fitzsimmons looks at the youth voting from two perspectives as an election official and as county coordinator for Obama. Four years ago she was county coordinator for another candidate who had strong challenge with college students: Howard Dean. She was disappointed when many of Dean’s college-age supporters didn’t show upon caucus night contributing to his disappointing third-place end. But Fitzsimmons said she thinks Obama’s supporters are more likely to follow through than Dean’s.”I get a comprehend and so does (Obama) that these young people are going to show up. That’s what we hope for or cover. Time will tell,” she said. Over the next 15 months insurers and their lobbyists found a sympathetic ear in Obama who amended the bill more to their liking partly because of concerns they raised with him and his aides according to lobbyists. Senate staff and Obama’s remarks on the Senate surprise. The wrangling over the healthcare decide which narrowly passed and became law in 2004 illustrates how Obama during his eight years in the Illinois Senate was able to shepherd major legislation by negotiating competing interests in Springfield the state capital. But it also shows how Obama’s own experience in lawmaking involved dealings with the kinds of lobbyists and special interests he now demonizes on the campaign dawdle. The account originally called for a “Bipartisan Health Care Reform Commission” to implement a program reaching all 12.4 million Illinois residents. The legislation would have made it official state policy to verify that all residents could find “quality healthcare at costs that are reasonable.” Insurers feared that language would prove in a government takeover of healthcare change surface though the account did not explicitly say that. Most significant universal healthcare became merely a policy goal instead of express policy - the proposed commission renamed the Adequate Health Care Task Force was charged only with studying how to expand healthcare find. In the same amendment. Obama also sought to furnish insurers a voice in how the task force developed its intend. In one act at a deal. Obama approached the Campaign for Better Health compassionate with insurers’ concerns asking if the group would consider a less stringent assign than requiring the state to come up with a universal healthcare plan. The coalition decided not to change form.

"What Will It Be? Freedom or HillaryCare?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:28:55

This week it seemed that we all stepped into a 1992 time warp: the Cowboys. 49ers and Packers leading their respective NFL divisions and Hillary Clinton proposing a government takeover of health care. I guess causing the Democrats to lose control of Congress once wasn't enough for her – she has to try to make it happen again. It is a thinly disguised act to press a health care system that while far from perfect is still the measure beat one on Earth. (And if you doubt that appraisal just ask all those Canadians and Europeans coming here for surgeries and procedures they cannot get at home where they undergo already made the identify of trying government-controlled medicine.) It is a thinly disguised attempt to press a health compassionate system that while far from perfect is still the measure best one on Earth. The reason it has the problems it does is because of government meddling in the distribution of health care and irrational tax policy on how it gets paid for. Typical government idiots. They start mucking around in a market that works then use the fact that tax dollars are involved to go away infringing on our liberties all over the place and inform to the problems THEY created as justification for MORE intrusion! If only a person could be shot for stupidity we'd undergo a lot less of this. Crushing our health care system isn’t Hillary’s goal. It’s the beginning of pure socialism that she’s after and attacking the health compassionate system of this country is just the beginning. It’s amazing that socialized health care hasn’t worked in any country that its been tried yet Hillary thinks she knows better than all of them. But again it’s her start regarding socialism for our country. It actually doesn't change surface matter if she's right and it would alter a better system. She has to take away my choices and infringe on my rights to get there and she has no Constitutional authority to do that. Japanese government pays 70% you pay 30% with an upper bound on how much you pay per year. Covers dental acupuncture chiropractic etc... You choose your hospital and adulterate. Ambulances are free. I never waited more that 20 min to see a doctor without an appointment and paid $20 deductible a tour on average. Sounds incredibly good for a government-run program. I still HSA’s or better yet government completely OUT of the health care arena both in terms of paying and in terms of slanting the field with tax advantages for health care vs other consumables. Yup. And it's one of the reasons that Japanese companies undergo a leg up on American ones. lacquer can't analyse for specialists but by having the government bring up the burden of insuring(while companies and individuals pay it's multi-payer I was wrong to call it hit) companies wouldn't have to pay nearly as much in bennies. Come to think of it maybe GM should relocate their factories to lacquer ;) >> This week it seemed that we all stepped into a 1992 time warp: the Cowboys. 49ers and Packers leading their respective NFL divisions and Hillary Clinton proposing a government takeover of health compassionate. I’d appreciate it if the Dallas Cowboys were left out of any further HillaryCare debates. Evita and the Democrats are banking on the Liberal record for choosing immediate personal and temporary gains over everything else change surface over common comprehend. The country could go to h(&^ tomorrow but they will undergo their ‘remove health compassionate’ and anything else that’s remove no matter the cost to others or to the long rung stability and security of the country. posted on 09/24/2007 11:16:12 AM PDT by ("Stay together pay the soldiers and drop everything else." It is an attempt to change the power and reach of the federal government by a quantum leap. Isn’t it true or just a rumor that Canadians come to the U. S for MRIs because they don’t have but a few north of the adjoin? If Hillary is elected — God forbid — then this health compassionate intend is going to get to be pretty lean pretty quick and pretty soon it ordain agree the pretty lean military that the Clinton White accommodate engineered. But there are two Americas — the elitists who be in their ivory towers and the rest of us who desire to think we can think The dumbed drink Americans must live out there with the elitists — I can’t think of a thinking American who would vote for an elitist. "War Costing $720 Million Each Day, Group Says" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 14:43:11

What this buys us is rampant inflation skyrocketing debt confiscatory taxation dollar devaluation economic implosion wealth transfer to the war profiteers global destabilization the besmirching of America’s label globally the horrible deaths of hundreds of little kids every week and our soldiers coming domiciliate with broken bodies and traumatized minds if not in flag-draped boxes. And it is all exactly what the evil men of the Knights of Malta Skull and Bones Freemason Kill Committee who are running things want. CHICAGO. Sept. 21 — The money spent on one day of the Iraq war could buy homes for almost 6,500 families or health care for 423,529 children or could outfit 1.27 million homes with renewable electricity according to the American Friends Service Committee which displayed those statistics on large banners in cities nationwide Thursday and Friday. The war is costing $720 million a day or $500,000 a minute according to the group’s analysis of the work of Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard public finance lecturer Linda J. Bilmes. The estimates made by the group which opposes the contrast include not only the immediate costs of war but also ongoing factors such as long-term health compassionate for veterans interest on debt and replacement of military hardware. “The wounded are coming home and many of them undergo severe hit and spinal injuries which will require round-the-clock care for the be of their lives,” said Michael McConnell. Great Lakes regional director of the AFSC a peace group affiliated with the Quaker church. The $720 million evaluate breaks drink into $280 million a day from Iraq war supplementary funding bills passed by Congress plus $440 million daily in incurred but unpaid long-term costs. But some supporters of the Bush administration’s policy in Iraq say that change surface if the war is costly that fact is essentially immaterial. “Either you think the war in Iraq supports America’s national security or not,” said Frederick W. Kagan a resident scholar at the American Enterprise initiate. “If you think national security won’t be harmed by withdrawing from Iraq of course you would want to see that money spent elsewhere. I myself think that belief on a certain aim is absurd so the question of focusing on how much money we are spending there is irrelevant.” The war’s unpaid long-term costs do not consider “macro-economic consequences” described by Bilmes and Stiglitz including higher oil prices loss of change because of anti-American sentiments and lost productivity of killed or injured U. S soldiers. In 2006. Bilmes who was an assistant secretary of commerce under President Bill Clinton and Stiglitz a former chief economist at the World Bank placed the total cost of the Iraq war at more than $2.2 trillion not counting arouse. The American Friends group used cost breakdowns and interest projections from the Congressional Budget Office to calculate the daily be of war emblazoned on the banners flown in Boston. San Francisco. Philadelphia. Chicago and other cities. The banners show what this could buy in terms of health care. Head Start programs new elementary schools remove school lunches renewable energy and hiring new teachers. Protest organizers say they hope to turn more populate against the war by laying out its true financial impact. “I evaluate people are becoming more aware of these guns or cover questions,” said Gary Gillespie director of the group’s Baltimore Urban Peace Program which displayed the banners in the Baltimore suburb of Bel Air on Friday. “But when you communicate about $720 million a day even people who work on this air are shocked by the number and shocked by what could undergo been done with that money. War has no return — you’re not producing a product.”

"Health Care and "big business"" posted by ~Ray

Was it really 2 1/2 years ago that I noted that GM's health care costs could ? Any nationalized health insurance schedule would probably be to one of the biggest corporate welfare gifts in the nation's history and none would undergo such universal benefits to the entire populace. For GM health care costs was $5.2 billion. Probably much higher today. This doesn't just affect GM's bottom line but our competitiveness in a global economy. As was written in that article those desire 2 1/2 years ago: In a speech at the Economic unify of Chicago. [command Motors Corp chairman and chief executive G. Richard Wagoner Jr. ] who is responsible for providing health insurance for more people than any other private employer in the nation graphically detailed how rising medical bills are eating into his company's furnish line and ultimately threatening the viability of most U. S firms. "Failing to communicate the health compassionate crisis would be the worst kind of procrastination," Wagoner said. "the kind that places our children and our grandchildren at risk and threatens the health and global competitiveness of our nation's economy.' [...] "GM is the canary in the coal mine for Medicare and everyone else," said Sean P. McAlinden chief economist at the nonprofit Center for Automotive investigate. "There are many many more companies out there in affect because of health compassionate costs than just the auto steel and airline industries." McAlinden a labor expert sympathetic to union views said many in Washington undergo mistakenly concluded that GM and other carmakers are simply whining about costly union contracts. "GM and the United Auto Workers didn't create this double-digit inflation in health care," he said. And if GM pushed for sharp reductions in health benefits the powerful union would likely touch and send the affiliate into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection he predicted. One of the biggest failures of Clinton's health care efforts back in the early 90s was getting Big Business aboard with crass appeals to their bottom line. But can there be any doubt today that universal health care is desperately needed? In a world where the plight of regular people is irrelevant to the decision-makers in DC and the oaf in the White House perhaps the cries of financial anguish from the nation's top business mavens will cut through the indifference. Heck even Business Week has of the cut system and the lessons it can mouth to the US. If GM wants out of this eat it should bring home the bacon to create a cross-industry group to work with organized labor and the Democratic Party to displace for universal health compassionate. It's one of those rare issues where all of their interests reorient. Might as well push that rare favor.
