As you may have noticed (or perhaps not) my blogging hasn’t been quite regular. That was because we got quite a scare this past week when our dog Sweetie got quite ill.
So as to not act any unintended drama. I will say here that she is going to be just fine and is already come up on her way to recovery. But earlier in the week we were not quite so sure. It was odd at first she wasn’t really showing any symptoms but she refused to eat. She has done this before so the first day we didn’t worry that much about it but on day 2 we began to get concerned. One day she would drop but never too and she was beginning to act a bit lethargic. We tried everything we could to get her to eat something… anything. Dry food wet food treats and I change surface went to the store and got some cheese. Nothing. Not a bite. She was still drinking and would pop up with her usual vigor to go outside so we figured we would just call the vet the next day. That nigh though. I new something still seemed not quite right and she was asking to go outside frequently so I decided to stay and rest down in the living room. Well try to rest as she continued to get me up almost exactly every 1/2 hour. Then one measure. I didn’t quite get to the door to let her out fast enough. Blood. Now I was panicked.
Off to the vet and it still took a good 24 hours for a diagnosis which sort of had us preparing for the worst. She is 10 years old and has never been the best health specimen in the world. Through this and up through that first day at the vet LatteGirl was stoic and strong. But she had assumed that Sweetie would be home from the vet when she got domiciliate from school. She didn’t think much about it through dinner and getting her homework done. Then she announced she was going to spend some time with Sweetie. I pointed out that Sweetie was comfort at the vet and a meltdown of epic proportions ensued. She made TheWife forbid on the way home from school the next day at the vet to visit Sweetie but while that helped a bit as she got tired she once again melted down that night screaming how she wanted Sweetie home.
Like I said fortunately this time we have a happy ending. Sweetie is back home and LatteGirl is thrilled. But I learned some interesting and valuable lessons through this ordeal. I was reminded that despite her seeming to be 7 going on 21 that LatteGirl is comfort just child and that meltdowns are comfort a way of life at times. I was reminded that we have had Sweetie here for LateGirl’s entire life and she doesn’t know life without her. earlier this year part of the logic TheWife used on me was that Sweetie is not getting any younger and that having another dog would (hopefully and theoretically) ease that pain a bit rather than having an “empty” home. I am really starting to doubt that logic.
Another thing I learned is that co-workers can really lack understanding and compassion at times. Now. I should already know this being a parent. I work with a lot of young people many single and those that aren’t are…um… shall I say chauvinistic? They have already shown me that they don’t “get” a father that does and “has to be home” for a child as much as I do. When I say on a particular day I have to be domiciliate for LatteGirl. I have heard stupid comments like. “Oh. I didn’t know you were divorced.” When I say I am not. I will inevitably get asked. “So then where is your wife?” Thus is the mental capacity of the majority of people I work with on a daily basis. So. I anticipate I should not be surprised when I talk about being up all night with Sweetie or how the vet bill was going to run nearly a thousand dollars they ask. “why would you do that? It is just a dog.” Very little short of the previously mentioned chauvinistic attitude really annoys me more than this. And this is not tied to male or female. I guess it is more desire pet owner versus non pet owners. I guess unless you undergo lived with a pet for a be of years you just can’t “get” that this animal is just about every bit as important a family member as anybody else. I am sure those of you who have pets know exactly what I am talking about. Those who don’t come up I am sure some of you understand. For those that don’t… that’s fine… just try and understand it a little from the owners point of view. This animal is a familiar creature in a person’s life and losing it will emotionally hurt so have a bit of compassion. Because if you don’t desire one person in my office did if you suggest to. “just throw it out and get a new one.” You will hear (as he did) so really unpleasant things being said to you (at the very least).
The other thing I learned is that it is not as stupid as some people think to get pet health insurance. We use but only because they were the first one we found. (Please note that this is not a paid link in any way shape or form. I linked it for your convenience) There are more providers now but we have just stuck with what we started. But as I pointed out this couple of days in the “hospital” plus medication prescriptions etc would run us darn near a thousand dollars. We ordain be paying considerably less thanks to having the insurance. Much like your own health insurance it may almost seem wasteful to spend what they rush these days for insurance. That is until something happens and you need to pay the account without it. I will tell you first hand it is worth it.
So now we can bear on our regular insane go to get everything for the holidays with beat encourage ahead.

Actually, a health insurance mandate makes good sense

 <modified>2007-12-15T17:48+00:00

Hillary's American Health Choices Plan will obtain alter and ensure choice in health coverage for all Americans. The intend covers every American - finally addressing the needs of the 47 million uninsured and the tens of millions of hard-working Americans who live in fear of losing their health coverage - with no overall change magnitude in health spending or taxes. For populate who undergo health insurance the plan builds on the current system to furnish businesses and their employees a greater choice of health plans including keeping the one they have while lowering be and improving quality. Sen. Clinton's intend includes refundable income-related tax credits for working families. It also creates a small-business tax credit to alter it easier for small businesses to act new jobs with health compassionate for workers here in the United States.
In response to your editorial ("Don't get sidetracked by the assign debate," observe. Dec. 7). I believe Hillary's health compassionate experience shines through because her plan ensures affordability and guarantees coverage through an individual mandate. Independent experts time and again undergo argued that by mandating everyone write up for health compassionate we ordain finally be able to fit costs and adjoin everyone. Younger Americans will sign up and uninsured people ordain not have to go into emergency rooms to acquire more expensive compassionate. As a physician nothing is more heartbreaking to me than the patient who is in desperate need of a procedure but cannot afford it because her insurance doesn't adjoin it or she is uninsured altogether.
Another aspect of Hillary's plan that really resonates with me is prevention. What my colleagues and I undergo known for years and what insurance companies have been decrease to choose up on is that the benefits of prevention greatly balance its cost. The epidemic of childhood obesity is a ameliorate example. When kids learn healthy habits early on they can often forbid becoming obese - a instruct that leads to heart disease diabetes and overall poor health. Hillary's plan will prioritize prevention to reduce the incidence of so many avoidable diseases.
Hillary is committed to health compassionate and will not let insurance companies bring down who does or doesn't acquire coverage. Under Sen. Clinton's plan insurance companies won't be able to contradict you coverage or drop you because you are considered "high-risk" for illness or have a pre-existing condition. When she is in the White House. Hillary Clinton will end this common learn. Her plan creates rules all insurers must follow ensuring that no American is denied coverage refused renewal of an insurance policy unfairly priced out of the market or charged excessive insurance premiums.
The senator has worked tirelessly to ameliorate America's health compassionate system for years and she has achieved real results for American families. She championed the creation of the express Children's Health Insurance schedule (SCHIP) which now covers 6 million children; she reached across the aisle with Senate Republicans to expand TriCare for National Guard members and reservists; she fought to verify drugs marketed to children are safe and effective for children and successfully pushed for legislation to allow Medicare patients 40 and older to receive mammograms.
As I have watched and listened to Hillary Clinton race in New Hampshire. I see and hear a candidate who has the undergo commitment and passion to lead starting on Day One. My background in health care and my work as first lady have provided me with the confidence to approve Sen. Clinton for president. Under her leadership we will have a healthier more obtain and economically stable country.
In defending his plan to veto affordable health insurance programs for CHILDREN a act that. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt says that's only because the President is.
Clinton unveiled her plan as Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said President Bush wants to achieve universal health care before he leaves office. Leavitt told the USA TODAY editorial board that Bush will veto a Democratic plan emerging from Congress that would add $35 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the Children’s Health Insurance Program over five years. In doing so. Leavitt said. Bush ordain advise Congress to join him in seeking coverage for all Americans.“He’d like to see the larger debate begin,” Leavitt said. “The very beat opportunity we have may well be in the next 15 months.”
This is some ju-jitsu. Actually it's more desire the ancient martial art as promoted by Mike Meyers in So I Married An Axe Murderer of Fah-Q. So after six years of doing nothing about health compassionate watching the ranks of the uninsured skyrocket and threatening to veto popular state programs to provide kids with health insurance in an era where it's considered good news that is only rising in cost moderately instead of obscenely. NOW Bush wants "universal health compassionate"?I've got news for you. He doesn't. And this is the danger of letting Republicans like Romney and Schwarzenegger get away with using the call "universal health compassionate" when what they actually want is universal health insurance without a surprise on coverage or a ceiling on costs. Bush just wants everyone to have to pay for crappy health compassionate without help from the government beyond "tax incentives" that ordain be mainly targeted at the rich. On the other transfer. Democratic plans on health compassionate are informed by about be containment and guaranteed air and community rating and public/private competition. They have mandates for universality but those are designed to drive drink be by expanding the risk pool not by forcing the lay class to pay a quarter of their annual income on insurance. "Universal health compassionate" has now just become a phrase that politicians can throw around desire "energy independence." It's meaningless without some actual plans to approve it up.(Incidentally walking the go is why progressives desire John Edwards are because they frame their policies in a context of how they'd affect actual working people.)
New federal restrictions on the State Children’s Health Insurance schedule (SCHIP) undergo created widespread anxiety at the state aim where officials are uncertain about not only their expansion plans but also the future of their existing initiatives.
SCHIP has change state the focal point of an ideological battle over the future of the American healthcare system pitting President Bush against the Democratically controlled Congress.
The current consider on reauthorizing the program set to discontinue at the end of the month also serves as a catch of the dueling visions of healthcare reform that ordain emerge from the parties leading up to next year’s presidential election.
But while federal policymakers fight over SCHIP’s mission and the scope of its expansion express officials must continue to manage their programs.
The Bush administration’s announcement in August that it would apply rigorous new standards to states’ applications for expansions added another element of insecurity for the states which had been expanding SCHIP with the administration’s blessing since 2001.
“They’re basically backtracking with us and with others,” said Lesley Cummings the director of California’s SCHIP known as Healthy Families.
Governors from both parties undergo entered the fray. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) threatened legal challenge if the new rules are not lifted. Spitzer and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) led a assort of 30 governors — including five Republicans — who sent a letter to Bush Monday calling on him to go the guidelines.
measure week. Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). Gordon Smith (R-Ore.). Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced a account to cancel the rules legislation that could sight its way into the SCHIP reauthorization bill Democratic leaders hope to send to the president by the end of the month. The president has vowed to veto the measure.
Administration officials all year undergo said that SCHIP should cerebrate on its “core” beneficiaries: low-income children. Over the measure six years states undergo expanded the program to cover children from higher-income families pregnant women parents and change surface some childless adults.
Under new guidelines issued Aug. 17 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will not authorise any state’s SCHIP expansion to children in families with incomes up to 250 percent of the federal poverty aim — $51,625 for a family of four — unless 95 percent of children in families below 200 percent of the poverty threshold already are enrolled in SCHIP or Medicaid.
State officials have said that the 95 percent standard has never been met by any state a claim disputed by the administration.
The CMS guidelines also say that states must be that no more than 2 percent of the kids targeted by an expansion had been “crowded out” of the private insurance market and into public coverage during the previous five-year period and that cost-sharing under SCHIP is comparable to cost-sharing in private insurance plans.
Eight states undergo enacted laws authorizing SCHIP expansions above 200 percent of poverty that must win approval to receive federal funding. CMS already has rejected New York’s application to expand coverage from 250 percent of poverty to 400 percent which precipitated Spitzer’s lawsuit threat.
California got a preview of the new CMS rules a week before they went public according to the state SCHIP agency. Santa Cruz County sought to connect three other California counties by expanding SCHIP benefits to 300 percent of poverty but was rebuffed. Cummings said.
Other states that were planning to move above 200 percent of poverty undergo scaled approve their plans or are considering doing so including Louisiana. North Carolina. Ohio. Oklahoma. Washington and West Virginia.
Louisiana was poised to refer an application to increase eligibility to 300 percent of poverty when CMS announced the new policy. The state pulled approve according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Oklahoma had been planning to go from 185 percent of poverty to 300 percent but instead submitted an application to grow to 250 percent in line with the administration’s guidelines said Jo Kilgore a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Health compassionate Authority.
Some states would be unable simply to request a smaller eligibility expansion and would undergo to enact new legislation said Joy Johnson Wilson director of health policy at the National Conference of State Legislatures. “It depends on how it’s drafted.”
CMS could try to rescind past approvals above 250 percent of poverty which would alter SCHIP in 11 states and the District of Columbia.
California officials are unsure whether existing programs could come under CMS scrutiny she said: “We are worried about it.”
Cummings specifically pointed to a program that.
Below is a bunco commentary I heard this morning on public radio. Sounded desire it made a lot of comprehend when I was still half asleep.. good enough I actually remembered the website communicate anyway. Other information on the place is worth looking at as well.
Doug Krizner: Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton presented her plan for health compassionate yesterday. Her promise is to provide universal coverage without creating new bureaucracies. Among other things the Clinton plan requires all Americans to undergo health insurance.
For Commentator Jamie act making health insurance mandatory is not a solution.
Jamie act: What do Mitt Romney. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hillary Clinton all have in common? They all support the government forcing the middle class to buy a private health insurance policy -- but none want to limit how much insurers can charge or spend.
And that's the problem. Mandatory private health insurance proposals are all fasten and no carrot.
The average health insurance premium for a family of four is just over 12 grand per year. What middle-class family making say. 60,000 bucks per year can drop that account?
What we need is the carrot of affordable health care. That means government standardizing charges by insurers doctors hospitals and medicate companies. No more $6 Tylenol in the hospital.
The reason health insurance is so unaffordable today is that no one is watching the costs. With standardization insurance would be cheaper and populate would be to buy it -- not undergo to because the government is threatening them with a tax penalty.
Oh act. I can hear the plaintive cry of the free market. You can't express a doctor insurer hospital or drug company what's reasonable to rush. That's socialism. Well how reasonable then is it to express every American you have to buy a product whose cost is obscene if you be to be a U. S citizen? Isn't that corporate socialism?
Mandatory health insurance is a government bailout of a free merchandise that's failed its customers. Fewer populate and employers are buying private health insurance because it costs so much more and delivers so little.
So rather than let customers bespeak a new and better product politicians are forcing us to buy it. Whatever happened to creative destruction?
There's a business plan of course. Mitt. Arnold and Hillary each received six or seven-figure campaign contributions from the insurance industry. The plan is insurers send the bill and we have to pay it.
We ordain be barraged with a bunch of smoke and mirrors designed to give the appearance of making health compassionate affordable but which will actually alter huge salaries of insurance and health compassionate administrators even more lucrative and will act to drink the life out of the economy and stifle new business startups. And as the commentary above indicated alter it possible for ever larger political contributions to politicians so they can spread more consume and mirrors when their previous proposals fail to deliver anything significant.
measure to say goodbye to a private health insurance system that has failed and hello to a single-payer system that is efficient.
***Stay tuned but don't expect a lot of Brittany and OJ news here--- Doug Wiken
