"Clinic provides health services to the uninsured" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:25:03

The Oregon health care system isn't perfect. For those who fall through the cracks and don't qualify for the Oregon Health intend or can't afford private health insurance there are the Community Outreach. Inc. Medical Clinics. The Community Outreach Medical Clinics provide five medical clinics per week - three at the Corvallis facility one clinic in Albany and one in Lebanon. The clinics are vital to community members who otherwise could not afford to acquire medical care due to lack of insurance."Each clinic is anywhere from three to four hours in length," said Lisa Quick. M. S and Health Services Director for the clinic. "We undergo a minimum of three student volunteers at each one along with other non-student volunteers of course.""We see a lot of pre-med students inform here along with a lot of Spanish majors who work as interpreters or pre-med students with a minor in Spanish," Quick said. "However you don't have to be a pre-med student to volunteer here. We've had a wide variety of majors volunteer here because they wanted to or because they wanted community service hours."Pre-med volunteers have the opportunity to shadow a doctor or nurse practitioner - who also volunteer their time at no charge - but are not allowed to diagnose patients. Most volunteers help out with administrative duties such as filing medical charts checking in patients or coordinating the clinic."Volunteering here has been very helpful in the aspect of seeing patients that you normally wouldn't see in a regular health clinic," said Jessica Fowler a senior majoring in biology. "Most of these people are in unfortunate financial situations and without this clinic they wouldn't be able to receive any care whatsoever."Volunteers are also exposed to vital medical terminology and gain knowledge of how to treat everyday medical ailments. They also make connections that go with shadowing health compassionate professionals."If you are applying to med school there are some great opportunities here to get letters of recommendation from the doctors and various health care professionals who work here," said Lea Vanlue an OSU alumna and current Certified Nurse Assistant. "It gives you a big appreciation for the doctors and nurses who volunteer their measure for these patients."The Corvallis Clinic is located on 865 Reiman Avenue. "Return to Mazista: a South African village recovers its health" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 00:12:48

Eight months ago just before the G8 meeting in Germany. I visited the village of Mazista in the North West Province of South Africa and. I described how villagers were too scared to disclose their HIV status and how the only easily accessible health service was a mobile clinic that visited twice a month. A week after returning from Germany I received a call from the North West Department of Health inviting me to an open day in Mazista where they were planning to educate people about HIV and AIDS and voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). Before I had a come about to accept their media liaison asked me why I had to air their dirty laundry to the world. His question took me by affect but made me wonder whether my article had anything to do with their invitation. I was told it was a coincidence. I couldn’t make it to the open day and in any inspect I wasn’t sure it was worth travelling 300 km for what I believed to be a publicity hinder for the health department. To my surprise it was not. The people of Mazista now undergo a mobile clinic that comes twice a week. Here they have find to testing and counselling for HIV. Some drugs not previously available such as medication for tuberculosis are also being delivered. I learned this after a recent tour to the village when once again I met Mmabo Lefatshe who had been so open about her HIV status and outspoken about the lack of services. She told me that some people in the village had been angry when they heard from the health authority that their business had been told to the world but she said they now understood. Lwandile Sicwetsha health department spokesman told me Mazista had been identified as one of the priority areas for healthcare services in the province. “Home-based caregivers have been trained and are now working in the village and updating the ministry with information regarding health needs of people in Mazista,” he told me. “Mobile clinics visit the area twice a week but this is complemented by health programmes targeting the area with door-to-door campaigns and awareness campaigns on HIV and AIDS pap smear and mental health.” According to villagers the door-to-door visits happen once a month - not enough but better than nothing. However the problem of access to antiretrovirals is yet to be addressed. Villagers still have to travel miles to get treatment. And I am worried that populate may not be taking advantage of the VCT being offered. The department could not provide me with data.

Yet again we are subjected to the lie that privatisation is more efficient that the public sector. At a international level just be at the US to see what an absolute travesty the private sector brings to health care. They pay almost twice as much as the UK as a proportion of GDP but don't provide care for 40 million populate. Cuba spends less than the UK's GDP proportion but has 5 times more doctors per head than us and has a fantastic health care record... Hospital chief: privatization is the best way forward. Kingston Hospital's ÂŁ1.6m intend for a private company to run its elective care is the only way to contend falling numbers of patients according to the hospital's chief executive Carole Heatly. She said that turning to the private sector was the best way for the hospital to increase the quantity of its elective compassionate - a necessary safeguard against losing its training status. If the 10-year deal is brokered a private company will act control of the hospital's new surgical centre day unit and eye unit. It would also be put in charge of the hospital's small private protect. Coombe go which it might be able to increase with profits shared between the hospital and the private company. The claim split of profits has not yet been finalised but Ms Heatly said the hospital's share would be re-invested in the NHS. It is also hoped that the company would grow the hospital's catchment area making the most of the patient's power to choose a hospital by marketing its services to GPs and potential patients. cater would remain employed by the NHS for at least two years but they would be seconded to the private affiliate who would manage them. Ms Heatly said that after two years staff may be able to decide to be employed by the private affiliate and that in similar set ups across the country many staff had chosen this option. Nora Pearce hospital midwife and Unison representative said: "The hospital has always said its most valuable asset is the staff. Now what are they doing? Selling their most valuable commodity."

For laparoscopic cholecystectomy the sites were consistent; hernia repair data varied more widely due to lack of data; and the different evaluation sites provided conflicting results on colectomy.- Limitations of included sites: lack of working definitions for quality-related terms (e g complications); inadequate procedure-level information; concerns about timeliness of data; fragmented and inconsistent data sources supporting the sites Current hospital quality data sources may give inconsistent results and utilize "suboptimal" measures of quality in some instances. Given the apparent trend toward patient consultation of such indicator sites surgeon involvement in data gathering and resource refinement may be key ways to improve the utility of these resources. Is it any Time reduction for processing LMO of Health function staff like nurses. . you may have already checked this:if not it may help. Apologies if it's not the right information and if I am stepping on toes.. not the intention. HRSDC processing times differ but at present you should count on at least 14 to 18 weeks if not longer from the day LMO application is received by them.  Andrew P.
