"Healthy Diet for the Dog" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:27:50

It has been about a year since I watched a schedule on television that changed my life.  You see it was a special about what was in and how they made it - and it changed my view on the world.  I was no longer interested in buying store bought food - I would rather give my dog something healthy. So at that point all the hold on bought food went in the garbage.  Thing is. I really didn’t experience what I was going to do but I knew that there had to be alternatives.  I took a trip to the pet store down the street and took a look to see if there was anything that I could make.  I found a cookbook there for that I purchased immediately. When I got home. I read through the schedule cover to cover.  I made a grocery list and decided to try some of the recipes out.  The first thing I tried was to make him some that I could bake in the oven like cookies - and he liked them. Now almost a year later we are still experimenting with different recipes.  But my dog just loves the food I make and is more healthy since I moved away from hold on bought food. "7 Unhealthy Eating Habits of Unproductive Bloggers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:50:53

There is so much controversy about eating healthily - what’s good what’s not and what you should and shouldn’t be eating - that when Darren asked if I’d be interested in writing more about health on Problogger. I seriously had to evaluate twice. You guys and gals out there reading this post are all individuals. You each undergo unique requirements when it comes to your health and dietary needs. I can’t possibly advise you in one blog affix on all the beat things to eat and wouldn’t even dream of trying. You experience best when it comes to your body and what it needs to be healthy - not me. Some of you however might undergo forgotten this or forgotten how to listen and comprehend what your body is telling you…you might change surface have the following symptoms or signs from your body: You must have had that undergo when you’ve forgotten to eat and suddenly feel starving…a root around the cupboards and refrigerator turns up nothing but a bag of chips some chocolate or some instant noodles and even after you take those down you’re hungry again within the hour. With a bit of forward planning you can have more of the ‘right’ foods in your fridge and cupboards and less of the ‘naughty’ foods that you experience you clutch when the hunger pangs strike. Stocking up with quick and easy solutions to nourish your be in the lay of a blogging frenzy is a great way to maintain your productivity without having to reach for the junk food. Grabbing food here and there as and when you remember to eat is one way to mess up your blood dulcify levels and metabolism. There’s a reason why the advice to “eat regularly” is in every hit diet and nutrition book you’ve ever read…it works! From a blogging perspective it helps maintain your blood sugar levels and therefore your energy levels - and also helps you maintain your focus and concentration for longer periods. If you are trying to lose weight it is also a great way to ensure that your metabolism remains stable and your be doesn’t go into starvation mode when you’ve forgotten to cater it after 6 hours of non-stop blogging. Food combining high protein low fat no carbs vegetarian - no one write of diet works for everyone. You undergo a unique biochemistry and therefore unique nutrient needs. What works for your friend won’t necessarily work for you and vice versa. How do you know what works for you? Largely by trial and error and by listening to your be. Everybody needs a fit of the 3 main macronutrients - proteins carbohydrates and fats. If this is the case play around with the balance of foods at each meal until you get it right. Try eating more carbs in relation to proteins & fats. Or the other way round - eat more proteins & fats in relation to carbs - this is usually the most common adjustment people be to make. When you get the balance right (and bequeath it might differ by meal and measure of day) you will feel satisfied and nourished a comprehend of wellbeing and easily able to focus and concentrate on your blogging. There is an ever-growing awareness of how much healthier organic locally grown foods are for you. Obviously however they can be expensive and if you’re still not convinced then that’s ok. A wide range of fresh foods in your diet however are infinitely better for you than surviving solely on packaged/canned/tinned/dried/frozen foods because of the quality and range of nutrients provided. Whatever your calculate always aim to get the freshest and best quality foods you can to consider in your diet. Supplementation is a necessary consideration these days because of the destruction and contamination of our natural food supplies. The over-processing of food even organic food destroys much of the nutrient determine and can often fail to give your body with the full range of nutrients it needs. …which is admirable but not so great when you give in to your cravings and eat that huge bag of chips sitting in the cupboard. Cravings are often a sign that you haven’t got the balance of your meals alter yet - so bring home the bacon on this first and your cravings ordain cease. If you follow the 80/20 rule and nourish your body with the food it needs 80% of the time there is nothing wrong with treating yourself to the things you apply 20% of the measure. There is nothing like an ice cold beer or furnish of red wine at the end of a successful week of blogging - and it is absolutely book to do this. A qualified health instruct said so! Every hit cell in your body knows exactly how to do its job perfectly. When something’s not alter your be will express you - it’s your job to listen and act accordingly. Ignoring these signs is desire ignoring the comments your readers get on your blog if they’re not happy with what you’re doing…it’ll only end in tears! If after years of do by and unhealthy habits you’ve lost the ability to comprehend to your be then go away by incorporating some of the heathier habits above into your eating routines and you should begin to notice the signs your body tells you. Your body is a finely-tuned blogging forge - establish healthy eating habits and cater it well and it ordain keep you blogging for years to come. This is interesting since after only two months at my communicate. I am already seeing myself alter poor food choices on a regular basis. This is a direct result of improper planning;. This bind was timely as this is in my psyche alter now. I’m also finding excuses not to work out and I’ve missed my yoga categorise three times — something unthinkable before blogging. I was saying to myself this week. “I gotta get back on track” and I gotta be more conscious about my health.” What I mean is that if you’ve never really been healthy (or haven’t been in a desire measure) you have no baseline. You think it’s normal to feel the way you do. On the other hand if you do apply regularly and eat healthily and slip up for a week or two you experience it: you feel crappy and you know why: too much junk food too little apply. I’ve had a busy busy week and I feel sluggish fuzzy. too much holiday food at parties too little apply.. I’ll fix that but I know that a LOT of the populate I see around me conclude like this every single day. They simply do not experience how badly they conclude! It hits too close to home for many bloggers and webmasters I would suspect! I see that my favorite breakfast eat eat and dinner items are featured prominently in this affix. But of the items pictured. Snickers is a lot healthier than the other sugary foods. Sugar-aside it has nutritious value - that’s what I keep telling myself :) I don’t experience what type of chocolate they use but it may have some antioxidant properties too. Healthily is a mouthful of a evince. Saying it out loud makes your tongue want to jump out of your mouth. My whole be convulsed when I read it! Such is the life of a ninja editor. Just an observation. Try reading the declare again with “healthy” instead of “healthily.” There isn’t that exceed? Sorry to be so nit-picky but I cannot ignore my ninja training. As I get older I’m getting more aware of how important it is to eat “healthy”. I do undergo this ritual where every month when I get my adsense payment I ordain order out just to praise.

"Why oh why do I do this? And have any ideas?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 19:53:05

I'm a student and on tuesdays and thursdays. I have class from 8:00am - 9:15am and then I am on a break (and in the cafeteria) from 11:00am - 12:15pm. I eat a healthy breakfast with lots of fiber before I get for school but then in that break time. I get hungry; lately. I've been buying a small bowl of chili on those breaks. The problem is that I know that I am buying that chili (as opposed to yogurt and fruit or other healthy alternatives) because I be something hot and comforting. The chili isn't the totally worst thing that I could buy but it's not the best. I don't really have the money to be spending on snacks either. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought about the following brought-from-home alternatives not many of which would "soothe" or alleviate me. I shouldn't be eating to comfort myself anyway. That's part of why I am overweight! Here is what I've come up with none of which seem very comforting to me:fruityogurtalmondshomemade trail mixluna bars100 cal eat packsA couple of things that would be okay with me would be starkist tuna and crackers kits and those soups in a microwaveable container that don't be refrigerated. They undergo a ton of sodium but at least I experience the calorie ascertain. Anyone undergo any other ideas? I am a "salty" person not a sweets person. I don't like oatmeal and I need stuff that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Thanks in go! I have a great "thermos" style insulated container that is desire a large (but still portable) roll that keeps things desire chili and soup hot. I buy them wholesale and if you want to buy one from the same company (NOT from me this is not a sales fling!!! ) PM me for the name. When I can't intend ahead. I eat at educate too. I also crave warm comforting foods. I am eating at school and the best choices I undergo found are steamed broccoli with brown sieve ($2.50 be) and I carry baked tofu to add to it on some days. __________________Tamed women are safe. They don't challenge the prevailing request. But untamed women roar when injustice is done. They emit when they're stepped on. They get up and get when things aren't alter. And they bring dress when dress is needed. Karen Alexander Hey there! That's a great idea about the Thermos. Maybe I ordain look into one of those. I could handle steamed broccoli and brown rice. I forgot that there is a Panda Express on campus and I think it is open that early (that's another problem: most places are closed object for the convenient hold on and Rubio's and a few other places)... I could get some of those steamed veggies they have. Thanks! I love cup of dope tomato soup (in the little powder packets). It's not health food by any stretch of the imagination but it's only about 80 - 100 calories depending on the mark. If your cafeteria gives free access to mugs and boiling water all you undergo to carry with you is the packet. Campbell's makes a microwavable tomato dope product as come up that has about 100-120 calories. I think they undergo other types as come up but I've only had the tomato. You can drink it right from the thing it comes in so you don't be a remove or anything like that change surface. Just the microwave! You can alter many delicious kinds of soups that will feel great and be filling on a cold day. I alter big pots of soups and freeze them in individual containers. If you pull one out of the freezer in the morning and bring it to school with you it will still be pretty frozen by the measure you micro it for your eat. No need to keep. I act soup a lot of days to work. I undergo a real good unbreakable STANLEY "thermos" shaped like a move with a command it's pretty heavy duty that keeps it hot no problem ran about $25 at Target. Since I have made better choices I have been eating a lot of Progresso soups. You can get the "lighten" Italian-Style Vegetable 60 calories 0 fat or the chicken Noodle 50% less sodium 90 calories 15 fat or the 45% less sodium Chicken and Wild Rice 90 calories 15 fat. 2 servings in each can. I really like them a lot of varieties at Ralphs and Albertsons.. they run about $2 a can cheaper at Albertsons. Dill pickles and stuffed olives pack easy.. a little make noise not many calories. Good luck KIDDO. Have you looked into those Ziplock go bags? You could impel raw veggies in there and go them in the microwave. I also used to buy microwave rice. It comes in a sealed container (desire a TV dinner) but is shelf stable. You evince it and zap it for 2 minutes and viola rice. Also try freezing what you want to eat that day. If you displace it from the freezer at 7 it ordain still be cold by 11 (unless it's 90 degrees out). A store I used to bring home the bacon at had the same problem - nothing around was open when I went to eat and I had no way to hold on food. I started putting everything in the freezer so by eat time I just had to zap it. Hips : -1 inches (7 inches to go)Waist : -3 inches (8 inches to go)Bust : -2 inches (6 inches to go)Total Lost : 6 inchesRemaining : 21 inches Trooworld. I am not sure if you have find to a microwave or if you can cook at home. If you do (both things) make your own chili and soup like baffled suggested. I do exactly the same thing. I stand still the soup or chili in a muffin tin. I displace one to work in a microwaveable container and nuke it when I am create from raw material for eat. Campbell's makes a microwavable tomato soup product as come up that has about 100-120 calories. You can consume it alter from the thing it comes in so you don't be a spoon or anything like that even. Yes this is similar to what I was thinking of. I think Campbell's makes the soups that I am thinking of they come in their own microwaveable "bowl" and you just pop the top and microwave it. I evaluate I will also end up doing this. I was trying to avoid taking a container to school and then having to shove it in my backpack when I'm done but I evaluate that is the bottom line.. it would be more healthy than the canned soups. I have a real good unbreakable STANLEY "thermos". Since I have made better choices I undergo been eating a lot of Progresso soups. Dill pickles and stuffed olives case easy.. a little crunch not many calories. Ah ha! Now I experience your secret to success! dope for lunch. I like pickles and olives.. but how would I shove those in my hike without them getting crushed? I can't take anything that doesn't fit in my hike. I undergo to go pretty far to school and don't want to lug a lunchbag around with me. What about frozen pickles and olives? No that would probably be gross. That's a good idea. I don't undergo find to mugs but if I pay. I can use their boiling water. I could use their microwave for free though. You just made me think of something: I could get those packets of chicken broth and add them to wet and consume those. Tons of sodium but I would get my fix. undergo you looked into those Ziplock steam bags? You could impel raw veggies in there and go them in the microwave. I *like* those veggie steam bags. I am too lazy to actually steam veggies so I buy those already in a bag and cut up veggies and pop those in the microwave and they come out great. beat invention in a desire measure. Trooworld. I am not sure if you have find to a microwave or if you can cook at domiciliate. If you do (both things) alter your own chili and soup like baffled suggested. I do indeed have find to a microwave. I think I ordain go away making dope on the weekend and freezing it in individual containers.

"Question #2 9/18/2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 14:40:09

Dear uncle ezra,I undergo a really important question for you and I really hope that you will respond to this because I dont know who else I can talk to. In high school I was diagnosed with depression and then bipolar disturb my educate found me a great local therapist. Sheila to back up me.She was the first person who I ever opened up my heart to and I became very attached to her. Over the two years that I saw her. I became very attached. However since coming to Cornell it has been very hard for me to let her go now that I dont see her anymore. It just breaks my heart that shes not in my life anymore. She slips into my consciousness everyday (change surface though I really try not to think about her) and I dream about her all the time (especially when I need her most). Some days I evaluate Im going nuts the way she preoccupies my thinking. Im very conflicted because I desire her terribly and I wish all the measure that I could reach out for her help but at the same measure Im so angry at her. I know its wrong but I feel deeply betrayed by the fact that its nearly like she was paid to care for me and now that she is not paid for her services anymore she doesnt care about me.She was one of the first person who I felt truly ever cared for me and she was the only person in this world who I thought truly loved me (if that is change surface possible). And now Im broken how could I undergo been so nave to ever undergo believed that what I felt was real! My divorced parents left me to my grandparents to start their own families that I could deal with but this just hurts too much. I thought she taught me what was like and she showed me how to be honest change state and trusting. How can someone truly care for someone only conditionally? Only for a period of time? Only for the hour she sees me. If so what is like care really? What does it mean by what she said to me? And the way she made me feel? AND how do I GET OVER HER (ONCE AND FOR ALL). I know you probably think that I should sight a new therapist at Gannett but I really cant feature to go through this again. And I can't ever trust my feelings to anyone anymore. But at the same time I need help. Ive been off meds and my life has been spiraling out of hold back since freshman year. (Can I see a psychiatrist at Gannett without being referred by a psychologist?) Its a new year and Ive let this slip for too desire. Im stuck and I know I ordain be until I figure this out. Please uncle ezra shed some light. In my continue I imagine you to be my wise old uncle. Please tell me why life feels so tiring so difficult so painful. Please share your wisdom and tell me how I can survive to your age all those years that lay ahead of me still yet to conquer. How fortunate that you open a therapist who was able to see how valuable and lovable you are. As she slips into your consciousness each day be sure to remember all of the things that she noticed and loved about you. All of those things are still part of you and need to be recognized by you now that she isn't close by. You might even want to write a list of your best qualities. The ones that she saw that are sometimes hard for you to see. All relationships go and go change surface those that last almost a lifetime. The fact is you learned how to receive and give caring. You know how to do it and you know how special it feels. What you entangle was real. Right now you are feeling the loss of that relationship. That's normal and natural. I don't declare you GET OVER HER. I declare you cherish every wonderful hour that you spent together and accept the fact that it was a relationship with limitations. You can't recreate that relationship but you can move on to form new caring relationships. Maybe relationships that don't have those limitations. I actually don't know if you should find a therapist at Gannett but it is obvious that you need to go to Gannett for a medication assessment. Spiraling out of control is not fun and it's usually easier to put things approve in order at the beginning of the spiral rather than towards the end. Don't let this slip any longer. So call Gannett right now and set up an appointment. They have a variety of services; you and the person you talk to there will figure out which are right for you. Life doesn't have to be difficult and painful. Many many many populate with bipolar disorder live very happy and healthy lives after they evaluate out the right medication and learn how to bring home the bacon their stress levels. In fact. Kay Redfield Jamison who has bipolar disturb and is a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins is coming to Bailey Hall today - Sept 18 at 7:45 to talk about her life with bipolar; the challenges she has faced as well as the extraordinary achievements she's made. Bipolar disorder comes with amazing qualities of creativity and exuberance. Come to the lecture and hear about the assets that go with bipolar and learn that you are not alone. Many people in the audience will be there because they live with a mental illness. Cornell Minds Matter is a student run organization on campus dedicated to destigmatizing mental illness and helping students deal with stress in a way that enables them to be a balanced healthy life. write up to be on their listserv to find out when their next events are send an email to Jung js473 and he ordain add you to the list. Dear Generous, convey you so much for your kind words. It's wonderful that you like Cornell and all it has to furnish but I understand that sometimes depression can get in the way of making good use of all that is available. I hope you have found some ways of relieving depression. It's different for every person. For some a regular habit of exercise is all they need for others medication works wonders. Some need to plan laughter comedy and appreciation into their lives. Most sight that regular rest healthy diet and refraining from alcohol are necessary. Loneliness is something all Cornellians feel at times but some more than others. Pay attention to times that you don't feel lonely and do more of that. Join a unify or organization that has meaning for you. Making a difference and fulfilling a purpose in life is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Knowing that populate are counting on you makes it hard to sink into that deeper depression at times. Thanks for writing. It's good to comprehend that my words are helpful. Dear Uncle Ezra,I am a college freshmen that is considering something a little radical. I am in the process of applying for an external chew over abroad program. Now I know what you're thinking that sounds innocent enough but the surprise is this is an incredibly unique once in a lifetime one of a kind program really only geared toward first year university students. So in straightforward terms I am thinking about studying abroad the back up semester of my freshmen year. I haven't had the brace to address the possibility with any of the school faculty or really anyone else for that be because I'm all afraid they'd all evaluate it was a terribly ridiculous idea. Technically I would still be able to do it my sophmore year but at then point I would run the risk of falling behind in my course work. So what do you think? Am I being overly ambitious?Aspiring young traveler Each sport sets their own guidelines in conjunction with the department based on participation during the year. "What makes us healthy?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:11:43

Many explanations undergo been offered to alter comprehend of the here-today-gone-tomorrow nature of medical wisdom — what we are advised with confidence one year is reversed the next — but the simplest one is that it is the natural rhythm of science. An observation leads to a hypothesis. The hypothesis (measure year’s advice) is tested and it fails this year’s test which is always the most likely outcome in any scientific endeavor. There are after all an infinite be of wrong hypotheses for every right one and so the odds are always against any particular hypothesis being true no be how obvious or vitally important it might seem. [. .] The dangerous bet being played here as David Sackett a retired Oxford University epidemiologist has observed is in the presumption of preventive medicine. The goal of the endeavor is to tell those of us who are otherwise in fine health how to remain healthy longer. But this advice comes with the expectation that any prescription given — whether diet or medicate or a change in lifestyle — ordain indeed prevent disease rather than be the agent of our disability or untimely death. With that presumption how unambiguous does the evidence undergo to be before any advice is offered? [. .] Richard Peto professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at Oxford University phrases the nature of the conflict this way: “Epidemiology is so beautiful and provides such an important perspective on human life and death but an incredible amount of rubbish is published,” by which he means the results of observational studies that appear daily in the news media and often change state the basis of public-health recommendations about what we should or should not do to promote our continued good health. [. .] All of this suggests that the best advice is to act in mind the law of unintended consequences. The cerebrate clinicians test drugs with randomized trials is to establish whether the hoped-for benefits are real and if so whether there are unforeseen side effects that may outweigh the benefits. If the implication of an epidemiologist’s study is that some medicate or diet will bring us improved prosperity and health then wonder about the unforeseen consequences.
