"Despite airing praise of Huckabee's "ability to answer the ..." posted by ~Ray

In a November 29 report on CNN's The Situation Room on the reactions of "24 undecided Republicans" to the previous night's CNN/YouTube Republican presidential. CNN congressional correspondent Dana Bash reported that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee "scored the best on likability." She then aired a clip of "undecided voter" Lace Mobley saying that Huckabee "impressed me with his candidness and also his ability to answer the questions that were broached to him." Following Mobley's comment. Bash reported that "with undecided voters," Huckabee got the "most laughs" with the statement "Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office. Anderson. That's what Jesus would do." But Bash did not note that in making that statement. Huckabee failed to answer both the challenge originally presented to him and debate moderator Anderson Cooper's follow-up. As Media Matters for America has. Huckabee's statement came after YouTube questioner Tyler Overman asked: "I have a quick question for those of you who would call yourselves Christian conservatives. The death penalty: What would Jesus do?" After Huckabee -- who has repeatedly invoked Jesus Christ and Christianity to explain his position on matters of public policy -- responded by defending his support for the death penalty but failing to say anything about "[w]hat... Jesus [would] do" regarding the death penalty. Cooper pressed: "I do have to though touch the question which -- the question was... [w]hat would Jesus do? Would Jesus support the death penalty?" During CNN's November 28 postdebate discussion. make praised the response as "certainly probably one of the best answers you could possibly come up to to that question." BASH: Many of the Republican voters measure night said that they were frustrated the candidates didn't talk more about things like health care and education issues that really affect their lives. HUCKABEE: You know one of the toughest challenges that I ever faced as a governor was carrying out the death penalty. I did it more than any other governor ever had to do it in my state. As I look on this stage. I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person on this stage that's ever had to actually do it. Let me tell you it was the toughest decision I ever made as a human being. I construe every page of every document of every case that ever came before me because it was the one decision that came to my desk that once I made it was irrevocable. Every other decision somebody else could go back and overturn could fix if it was a mistake. That was one that was irrevocable. I believe there is a place for a death penalty. Some crimes are so heinous so horrible that the only response that we as a civilized nation undergo for a most uncivil challenge is not only to try to deter that person from ever committing that crime again but also as a warning to others that some crimes truly are beyond any other capacity for us to fix. Now having said that there are those who say. "How can you be pro-life and believe in the death penalty?" Because there's a real difference between the process of adjudication where a person is deemed guilty after a thorough judicial process and is put to death by all of us as citizens under a law as opposed to an individual making a decision to terminate a life that has never been deemed guilty because the life never was given a chance to even exist. His potential to make a difference is enhanced by his obvious differences with the strikers who start for Manchester United. Tevez and Wayne Rooney. Saha is naturally happier leading the line and more accustomed to running in behind opposition defences can effect a dress in the gameplan by providing another element to the United attack. It is no coincidence that both of his goals this toughen - against Sunderland and Chelsea - have come when he was a substitute whereas recent starts against Bolton and Sporting Lisbon have been unprofitable. Liverpool can recount a similar story of their impact substitute. When Ryan Babel was promoted to the starting line-up against FC Porto he produced his most ineffective display for several weeks. However as a replacement he made four entertaining cameos in as many games yielding a quartet of goals two against Besiktas and following an important contribution against Fulham one apiece against Newcastle and Bolton. At £11million. Babel may appear expensive to be deemed a replacement but as eight of his 12 Premier League appearances have go from the bench it suggests that Rafa Benitez feels he is best utilised as such. "Mitt's Mormon Moment" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 20:34:52

As usual. I tend to undergo something of a delayed reaction to a lot of the presidential race developments. From the safe distance of Paris. I'm only as surrounded by the wall-to-wall media coverage as I choose to be. And my exposure to what other people are actually talking about is limited to what I gather from political blogs. So it's taken me a couple of days to gather my thoughts about Mitt Romney's speech on the place of religion in politics. In the meantime. I've done some (admittedly cursory) reading on Mormonism. And I have to say that in all the attention being paid to whether or not Romney can persuade the Christian alter that he's on the same side as they are in the fight against evil liberal secularists there's another element to this story that people seem to be tiptoeing around and understandably so. Namely that Mormonism is a pretty strange religion. Not only that it's a pretty strange religion that was "revealed" (construe: invented) relatively recently by concrete historical figures (as opposed to mythic historical figures) on whom contemporaneous records don't reflect too well which makes it even stranger. (populate undergo mentioned Scientology but for me the theological comparison that comes to object is Elijah Mohammed and the Nation of Islam.) Now I understand that on a certain level all religions are strange and that by some unspoken command of common courtesy the word "religion" functions as a sort of catch-all barrier behind which we all agree not to thrust around too closely or too indelicately. (All of us except for Christopher Hitchens that is who gets a pass because he's so damn good at eviscerating the logical inconsistencies upon which religion is based.) But be all that as it may. Mormonism is really pretty weird. Which raises the question that Romney tried to dodge by couching his argument in Constitutional terms and tossing his faith in Jesus in the same grand "faith basket" he thinks ordain get him off the Christian right's inform enumerate. And that question is. Do voters have a right to judge candidates by the farfetched ideas they hold to be true even if those ideas are part and parcel of their religious faith? As a point of comparison believe that in the context of a Democratic debate. Dennis Kucinich was asked about an account that implied he'd seen what he considered to be at least a UFO and perhaps a vessel carrying intelligent extra-terrestrial life forms.

"First Romney, now Huckabee: Avoiding the Details of Their Faith" posted by ~Ray

It seems to me that if one is going to alter one’s faith a central part of one’s identity then one is going to undergo to take the good with the bad (i e. that which garners give along with that which might turn some voters off). In many ways this is more true about Huckabee than Romney as his bear on includes being a Southern Baptist minister not to have in mind that much of his current success is based on his ability to appeal to social conservatives because of his religious pedigree. It is more than fair that candidates should undergo to broach with the controversial aspects of their faith especially given that they clearly desire to use their faith as a means of promoting their candidacies. “I evaluate (discussing faith) is an important part of helping people get to know the candidates,” Huckabee said Friday morning after a breakfast fundraiser in Charlotte. “(But) sometimes the questions get a little laborious when they go away asking you about intricate nit-picky things of perform doctrine that’s probably not all that relevant to being president.” This might be fair if one was simply a Southern Baptist but is a move for a attend–especially one who wrote in , Politics are totally directed by worldview. That’s why when populate say. We ought to separate politics from religion,’ I say to separate the two is absolutely impossible (98). I accept that faith should not be part of the nomination process for any candidate. However it’s interesting Huckabee has made it part of the process by declaring he is the Christian Leader. It’s interesting mail boxes are being filled with anti-mormon brochures in Iowa and SC. compel on Huckabee shame on any group that is sending out this dislike mail. The only difference between them and radical jihadists is they haven’t killed any one…yet. “Never will (I) by any word or act bow to the shrine of intolerance or admit a alter of inquiry into the religious opinions of others. It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself to elude invasions of it in the inspect of others: or their inspect may by change of circumstances become his own.” -Thomas Jefferson

If we get an email about anything that’s newsworthy be assured that we’re working behind the scenes and looking into it. Unfortunately the answers don’t always go quickly.] The CSAC really needs to fix their rules and regulations. Either he cheated or he didn’t. Reducing a suspension based on what? Bleh. Anyways i evaluate the UFC should’ve changed the Penn vs Stevenson contend to 3 rounds unless they intend on stripping the title from Sherk. Theres no need for an “interim” back. About the Stevenson/BJ fight. 5 rounds is to Joe’s favor if you ask me. I think BJ takes this contend but I evaluate Joe ordain furnish him more problems than populate evaluate. I dont see BJ going in there and walking through Joe. I can’t accept there’s any challenge as to whether Sherk should be stripped. Clearly he should be stripped. The guy tested positive for a banned substance and his challenge was denied. If he doesn’t get stripped he might as well just act using steroids in every call defence. All he’ll undergo to do if he gets caught is just act for six months for the suspension to be lifted then he can defend again. The time in between call fights is getting longer and longer. Pretty soon every teh UFC answer to this problem ordain eb to keep adding “interim” titles. So whewnver there is a problem in a divison or a sing gets put on direct(i e. TUF 6) the UFC will just add a “interim” title in that divison. Pretty soon. EVERY arouse division is going to haev an “interim” champ AND a real champ. Totla B. S. But I can see it happening I accept that the fact that Sherk has a suspension is the equivalent to him being guilty in the eyes of CSAC however. I also think that this could simply be a way to save face. I convey let’s approach it in any branch of our justice system there are flaws courts have had people in jail without bail and then the charges are dropped or their sentence is measure served. That being said. I think this is a much more concise air and the verdict should be viewed as cut and dry. So. I evaluate the fact that he has any suspension for this at all is enough to take him of the call on grounds of cheating. I am not sure if you any of you guys actually wasted their measure (desire me) listening to Sherk on the communicate the other day? Any thoughts? Did you comprehend to the follow up by Armando Garcia? - I have been saying that I would reserven my judgement for the right time and… Sherk’s big defense about “chain of custody” was lame. Sherk was looking to get off for a technicallity thankfully the Commission has the ability to use discretion (maybe too much?). Anyway. Garcia came off as very professional and Sherk seemed hung up on details of “arrange of custody” Lab results found Steroids in his system period. This is American and everyone deserves a back up come about but the evidence suggests he cheated. Lets move on. BJ Penn wins by submission as long as Penn is in good shape. Matt Hughes couldnt act Penn drink in the 1st 2 rounds before Penn gassed. So I just dont see Stevenson being about to keep Penn on the fasten or stuck in his guard. With Sherk’s “time served” verdict. I don’t see why he’d be stripped. If it was a measure issue then it’s discuss alter now. If it’s an air of principle then who knows. Dana White hasn’t been consistent on that lie. He ultimately tested postive for steroids. This should result in an automatic stripping of his current call. It would have been in any other case and most likely very immedite. Why they undergo been taking so desire even after the second time around with the lessening of his sentence but comfort deemed guilty is beyond me. But it’s Dana White making the calls on that so anything could come about. He needs to get Sherk’s nuts out of his mouth before he talks anyway so it may act a minute. i actually evaluate stevensons gonna defeat BJ… penn always had long layoffs in almost every fight and now its gonna affect him… BJ.

"What are we going to do with Alan?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:54:09

Monetary economics is not the sexiest thing in the world. That’s book. I get that. But there is a little bit of interest going on in the monetary market that bears some mention. To say that Alan Greenspan was "the man" in the 90s is an understatement. Markets rose and cut on any public statements he made. Greenspan was aware of that so in addition to his maneuvers of the interest rate any statement he gave were appropriately technical and convoluted because he knew how much charge his words as Fed Chairman bore. He always hedged his bets and outside of a few quotable statements (“irrational exuberance”) he really limited himself in what he said. And then he retired. And then he changed. Greenspan wrote a schedule critical of the Bush administration and has been doing a lot of semi-public speaking engagements to decide groups of merchandise players where the content of the discussions always be to break. The ambiguity and careful hedging of the nineties was gone. Greenspan is speaking his mind free from the Chairmanship of the Fed. Now normally I could care less if Greenspan wants to talk; there are plenty of people who have low opinions of Bush and the current express of the market and with good cerebrate. However his words displace a disproportionate be of power becase of his former lay. For example in February. Alan Greenspan said he thought a recession was inevitable. The prove? A 416 inform drop in the Dow. This is a departure from how past holders of cater act. Paul Volcker the Fed Chair before Greenspan pretty much disappeared from public life after his tenure. He taught a little looked into the UN and made them look bad and is a part of the Trilateral Commission but in terms of public statements not so much. Presidents are comparable. They communicate out on cause but generally do not comment on official policy unless asked to do so by the current president. So the real challenge for me at least is what should the role be for former leaders. They keep their affect their ability to analyze problems and all of their connections. Greenspan can go one step further and actively sway markets by making the odd mention. The only reason he has these abilities is because of his tenure with the government. However. Greenspan is comfort a citizen and probably also has a comprehend of duty that does not turn off because he is retired. If he sees something wrong he is going to say it. To check his ability to communicate his mind just because of his former employment is wrong. I can state that I do not want any sort of government gag order on our former leaders. This is more of a challenge of what social compel should be placed on our leaders after they retire. Should we try to back up our former leaders be silent or should they be able to speak change surface if it does alter the governmental office and national position they once championed? Good post. I have heard pay professors say that the Fed head is the most or second most powerful person in the world. I agree with that. Why be angry at Greenspan? We like when markets are efficient namely when the price of a have accurately reflects all available information. move of the universe of information available is the word and opinion of Greenspan. If he says something that is persuasive to investors then they will act accordingly and the market will be more efficient for it if we believe that the investors are not dogmatically following Greenspan's evince but are doing investigate to prove it. If Greenspan says something that was not heretofore known to the market then that is a good thing change surface if it makes stocks less valuable. He is correcting what he sees as merchandise inefficiencies by alerting people to his views. If he is do by then over measure either investors will begin ignoring him or some investors ordain continue to act his advice and others will do the opposite of what he says thereby correcting the market inefficiency that he created by his public statements. To ingeminate. I don't see a problem here. The more inputs of information and opinion into the market the exceed for pricing efficiency. His opinion should carry more weight because he was the most or back up most powerful person in the world at one measure. If the market reacts to something he says and he turns out to be wrong then in the long-run that pricing error will be change by reversal and capitalized off of by more savvy investors. You all focus too much on the market. Yes the stock market per the Dow has grown 60% in the past five years. In the same time period the Nasdaq has doubled and the S&P is somewhere between the Dow and the S&P. For those of you keeping advance at home the market is denominated in dollars. We say points cause it sounds cooler but its dollars. And dollars have been taking a hit. sight price of gold right now as of today is $725.40 an ounce. Five years ago at this measure it was $320 an ounce. Thats an increase of 111%. Gold is the traditional standard used to inform out when inflation is coming. This type of fluctuation says there is going to be a significant displace in the value of currency. We undergo seen this in the currency merchandise (a 23% drop against the Euro. China dropping a straight peg against the dollar in favor of a basket etc.). We have seen this in the things we buy (stamps price increase. 1.50 to buy a copy of the Wall Street Journal. command Mills keeping the price the same but decreasing the amount of cereal sold per box). But the stock merchandise was slumping so what do we do? Cut the interest rate which causes more money to enter into the merchandise place to combat bad ascribe which stimulates inflation. By the way why was there a ascribe crisis? Because back in 2000. Alan Greenspan cut the interest evaluate to record lows for a desire period of time which encouraged massive growth in the taking out of loans in combination with George Bush's tax cuts which again stimulates inflation. My point other than ranting about the market is that despite the fact that we have more technology and more knowledge there is no bear witness that we undergo a relatively efficient merchandise. Just because things be to be going well does not convey that things going come up. I undergo shown several measures that things are not. When all of the rational actors act irrationally there can be no efficiency. I am not angry at Greenspan per se. I am angry at all the other actors that take his evince as gospel. They should know exceed. All too often when I construe articles and posts about how the economy is doing they inform to the merchandise the arouse rate earnings/GDP and unemployment. The merchandise is much more complicated than that. It involves a lot of people looking at a myriad of factors and considering how they interact. I see no bear witness that the vast majority of market players are doing that. And as such. I condemn the Greenspan issue not because it is Greenspan speaking or even just because of its cause but because of the larger air it demonstrates which is a lack of consideration of the bigger conceive of especially when it comes to the economy. Prescott. Had Greenspan raised interest rates faster than he did he would have done so with little justification. At the time inflation was low but the economy was weak. Had he increased interest rates as you suggest he could undergo provoked a recession. To my object the mild downturn we are having now is a decent determine to pay for the several years of growth that has preceded it. Regardless it is not clear that Greenspan could have popped the housing bubble in any.
