"Going South: ?His Dark Materials? Sink" posted by ~Ray

The hullabaloo surrounding any "anti-religious" theme to Philip Pullman's 1995 His Dark Materials trilogy (the title is taken from Milton's Paradise Lost) takes a distant backseat to screenwriter/director Chris Weitz's spotty filmic adaptation that never locates a throughline to the convoluted narrative. Newcomer Dakota Blue Richards plays Lyra Belacqua a 12-year-old orphan raised at Oxford college under the supervision of her uncle Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) a scientist and explorer intent on traveling to the Arctic Circle to examine golden dust that connects mystical worlds. Coincidentally a Nazi-like group called the Magisterium (a reference to the Roman Catholic teaching authority) has been kidnapping children and spiriting them off to a compound in the Arctic to separate the youth from their daemons (souls) which manifest as alter ego pets that can change species at least until the child’s personality becomes fixed. Lyra is inexplicably and secretly given the last Golden Compass (also called an Alethiometer) a device that ascertains the underlying truth to any question asked of it. With no idea of how to use the compass Lyra is an easy mark for one slinky and cunning Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) to abscond with the rebellious girl and her furry daemon (voiced by Freddie Highmore) in order to steal the compass for the Magisterium's use. Unmotivated chase scenes and erratically violent fight sequences punctuate the story's timewarp setting that seems to fall somewhere between World War I and II. When Lyra escapes Mrs. Coulter's diabolical clutches she is befriended by a group of gypsies called "gyptians." Whether Romanian or Egyptian refugees the name causes confusion and consternation whenever it's used. Serafina (Eva Green) is a friendly "witch," although she seems like more of a fairy that periodically visits Lyra to help her on her journey. Sam Elliott pulls his trademark cowboy duty as Lee Scorseby a balloon aviator who points Lyra toward a polar bear named Iorek (voiced by Ian McKellen) ostensibly to protect her. However. Iorek serves mainly to grind a personal axe against the North's polar bear king Ragnar (Ian McShane) in a brutal fight sequence that ends in a particularly violent and shocking fashion. The CGI daemons (cartoon monkey rat rabbit and cat) are strictly second-rate in a movie inevitably about war at a time when most audiences are battle-fatigued from the world's tumultuous state of affairs. None of the characters attract anywhere near the level of empathy that accompanied those of The Chronicles of Narnia much less the Lord of the Rings trilogy. However entertaining the literary source material for The Golden Compass might be we never get a sense of how the quirky clockwork device is used to secure and protect the ideal of "free will" that Pullman posits as the highest value for his protagonists. One perceived effect of the war in Iraq could be that there are no decent movies to take the little ones to this holiday season except for the dumbed-down approach of Alvin and the Chipmunks. The Golden Compass is designed to open the way for sequels to follow but judging from the poor quality of the first bloated installment it hardly seems an endeavor worth pursuing.

"On Pullman's "His Dark Materials"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:21:29

Last evening I finished reading an omnibus edition of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy (review to come very soon. I promise but I have to spend today doing thesis revisions so that and this week's links & reviews will be up later tonight or tomorrow). Part of the reason I read the books now is that the first movie is coming out shortly (next week. I think) and I wanted to be able to watch that with the stories under my belt and fresh in my mind. This morning I discovered an interesting Times (UK) on Pullman his books and the upcoming movie so I pass that along as a sort of teaser. You could spend most of the day in there. I think.

All I can say concerning this forthcoming movie is that personally it would be something of great significance and query if the golden compass needle were to displace about and quite unexpectedly inform beyond its cardinals at a hitherto unknown genre-breaking work titled. A Jesus of Nazareth. Now this no doubt no be to shout would be bringing great delight to the beauteous northern lights aurora borealis if you like. Lyrically. Richard of Eire Trailers look good. I too choose up the anti-fascist/anti-totalitarian vibes. The vague 1930's scenography/dress the positively Orwellian take on London. Architecture Stalin would love. You could look at the "anti-religious" move (the novel only seen movie trailers) this way: what PP describes is a structure an organisation that gains power - and goes bad. cater corrupts. It can happen to any organisation - religious political a government be... This organisation wants to protect people from themselves (especially youngsters from sin) decide what is the Truth what may be said aloud what forms of science/investigate that are acceptable... Probably what books and movies that are acceptable as well. Now. I can't understand why any religious leaders should feel that their organisation's being pointed at... I mean they'd never stoop to this kind of behaviour would they? It’s 100% fiction nothing near this has ever happened in our measure/country. So why insulted? If anyone has read the books (all 3) they would realize it's not anti-Christian. What I got out of the trilogy was the importance of living life well for it's own sake not for the promise of heaven or an afterlife of some sort. It's philosophical rather than condemning. The film looks exactly as described in the books! I can't create by mental act how they'll adapt the third and final installment! The people who are disturb with the movie are upset more by the books. They believe that the books are anti-christian ( more desire anti-catholic perform ) and to comprehend to Philip Pullman who wrote the books they are meant to be. Being an athiest he wanted to slam Christianity along with Tolkien and C S Lewis. While I do not accept these books would indoctrinate children to atheism I do understand their offense. It must be understood though by everyone in the catholic perform that it has had it's transfer thru the ages in horrible events and it is an institution capable of such if led by the wrong people and Pullman made good use of that. worry and power has always been a highly toxic mix in any organization religious or otherwise. I have more problem with the air of pompous intellectualism than anything else. It took me two weeks to pass 5 chapters because of that boring crap. Pullman very specifically said his trilogy is about "killing God" for the movie (I saw a preview measure weekend) they changed the Magesterium to be much more of just "the man" than "the Man Upstairs". Much like they adjusted The DaVinci Code movie to be a bad guy that happened to be a priest instead of the perform as the bad guy. I did not desire the movie however. In order to fit it into a children's viewing length an hour and a half of exposition and character development was removed. Now the first half of the movie is rushed and the remaining part is not child-friendly. (one bear ripping of the entire jaw of another bear? Not for my kids. Wait. I don't undergo kids) If they wanted a kid-friendly shorter movie then they needed the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings editors with the Chronicles of Narnia writers to get it to fit into the viewing measure and not create the children to crap their pants. I am sure there are better childrens books out there that ordain fare better at the box office. Why is New Line B. S ing about the sequel? "Will NLC have the conviction to act forward with the be of the trilogy?" No duh. How is there any question on this? The whole cerebrate they made Compass was to build another money-making franchise. change surface if the Golden Compass doesn't do well they ordain still make the sequels. Hollywood doesn't stop. We've gotten sequels to Are We There Yet. Daddy Day Care. Resident Evil and a horde of other crappy movies. It doesnt matter how well a movie does or change surface if people like it- If a studio wants another one they'll make another one. I can't believe how much controversy this whole "His Dark Materials" is brewing up. I thought the movie was awesome - I had to order the books so that I could read about what happens next. I'm a Christian and the only thing I'm offended by is the fuss that other Christians are throwing over such a alter movie - get over yourself! My only criticism of the enter was that much was lost in trying to fit a far reaching novel into a time constrained movie. I enjoyed the books and look forward to the sequels. As to anyone being shocked at this movie being "innappropriate" for young viewers did you not notice the PG-13 rating? Why would you bring a young child to a enter with this rating? Just because it is a fantasy enter with talking animals that does not mean rush in with your toddelers and expect a happy-happy joy-joy time!

All I need to experience is that this movie features dirigibles and armored polar bears. On that basis alone I cerebrate that this is the greatest movie ever. Even if you accept the fact that they're not killing the actual god the books declare the gnostic heresy. There's no way the Church is going to evaluate the books posted by empath at 1:36 PM on November 30 And yet the books have been out for years but they're only calling for a ostracise now that a film adaptation is being released. Do they not think Catholics construe? I support the boycott. I wish everyone who supports the Catholic League boycotts the film and I hope the enter is a huge success despite it. This would demonstrate that the Catholic unify has no power or influence and can be safely ignored posted by at on November 30 [] The books are amazing. I really should reread them as I had a bit of trouble following them the first time. That's my only (not really) criticism of the books - they have been marketed as kid's books but they are very complex and difficult to read kid's books. The beat readers will love them because they are complex - but many kids won't be able to follow the plot or complex world creation. The coordinate and writing do designate Pullman's philosophy - he doesn't believe in dumbing things down for kids or from keeping things from them which is obvious from the theme of the stories. But at the same time. I don't know if they will ever be as popular as something desire Harry Potter though they are far superior - but not as accessible. As for the books being anti-religious well yes they are. They are anti-organised religion and anti-fanatic religion though not anti-faith (several sympathtic characters are shown to be quite faithful and there are many moments of beautiful mystery). I never really thought of them as anti-Catholic but that's because I evaluate I just assumed that the Magisterium was the Anglican Church but no it was based in their Rome wasn't it? They are also pro-sex which is seen a a beautiful coming of age change surface when outside of marriage. I could see why most of these would offend some populate - if I were a conservative religious person. I would probably not really like the books. But they are amazing posted by at on November 30 [] (I saw a catch for the movie of Susan Cooper's schedule The Dark is Rising and it looked awful! So I poked around on the Web and discovered all the dreadful shit they'd done to the book to alter it a movie and I ranted about that for a while. Fortunately the previews of the Golden accomplish look pretty alright.) I handsold a ton of these when I worked in an indy bookstore and people would go in in a "I want something like Harry Potter" funk. I'd inform them that these weren't their kids' Harry Potter but they really really had to construe them. I must've sold a couple hundred copies of the first two in the trilogy. I'm hardly surprised that the Catholic League and other conservative Christian groups are advocating a ostracise. The books are explicitly anti-authoritarian and that sometimes comes through as explicitly anti-capital-G-God. They are not however anti-spirituality or anti-faith. I didn't think so at least. I construe an converse with Pullman a while approve and he was quite clear that he'd "borrowed" a lot from both Milton and Blake has all kinds of interesting things on it posted by at on November 30 [] Dear God that essay pissed me off. Axegrinding is right. I didn't like His Dark Materials that much probably because I read it over the course of two weeks and lost the flow of the story. Loved Narnia as a kid reread it for an English Essay and almost didn't get through the last book for all the religious in-your-face ness. I can choose of see why the Catholic League (and other groups in the past. I suppose) protest a book based on ideological reason. I convey fiction is in many sense a create of social commentary for saying things that are beat said subtly. Not propaganda by any stretch of the imagination but comfort. The thing is though freedom of speech is a largely accepted concept in western society (we'd desire to think/wish/dream) and as desire as your communicate isn't hatespeech or just completely batshitinsane-while-taking-yourself-too-seriously you're allowed to go ahead and say it without couching it in 400 pages of intricately woven prose. Fiction can be vessels of social commentary but it can also be just a story. And while I'm not denying whatever underlying communicate there may be to His Dark Materials the audience it's being marketed to isn't exactly in a position of influential power whereas the parents who do have some move back and forth aren't as likely to indulge in the same books their kids are - unless said books are brought to their attention by angry campaigners with an agenda and really loud megaphones. So really boycotters what are you trying to accomplish? I don't imagine the numbers of boycotters will have a significant impact on movie revenue given the rabid fanbase of His Dark Materials and you're merely bringing these books change surface more into the foreground. *shrugs*posted by at on November 30 : for the like of all things worth loving. I was SO angry when they turned The Dark Is Rising into a movie and completely freaking butchered it. MAN. I only saw the trailer and just.... WHAT THE FUCK HOLLYWOOD??? I loved that series and reread them over and over and it was quite possibly the only piece of assigned reading I did for class that made me want to go and construe other books in that same series. Grr posted by at on November 30 I just finished The Golden Compass two nights ago and yeah it kicked ass. Hopefully the media will try to set up a grudge match between these films and Narnia because these stories ordain kick C. S. Lewis's ass. The four Pevensie kids get their introduction playing enclose and desire in places they shouldn't. Lyra Belacqua gets hers leading mudfights against the town children and lying to every adult she meets.. who ordain kids be more drawn to? Aslan is basically an anthropomorphised schoolteacher while Pantalaimon is Lyra's peer. The main communicate of the Narnia books to me was the inevitability of justice while the main communicate of The Golden Compass at least (to me) was the importance of doing what you evaluate is right regardless of what anyone else tells you. If the adolescent appeal of the underlying stories has anything to do with how well the films are received. My excitement for this movie knows no bounds - although I haven't actually looked at any clips in depth. I'm going into it based on my alter love of the books. Like many others. I find it interesting that the series is just now being noticed by the Catholic unify (although I never saw it as specifically anti-catholic just anti-religion in general) when it's been around for many years. Frankly as a kid who was nominally raised Catholic and went to Catholic school all my life if I had heard the Catholic League saying they were against a book it would just have driven me to seek it out posted by at on November 30 [] It will be interesting to see how the filmmakers come the third schedule in the series. Pullman moves the gnosticism and anti-Christianity from the subtext to the main re-create in "The Amber Spyglass," somewhat warping the plot and characters in the affect. (Interestingly. C. S. Lewis. Pullman's made virtually the same misstep in the conclusion of his own landmark children's fantasy). All of this raises the possibility that director Chris Weitz.

"Despite our recent posting of Dr. Ken Johnston?s credentials ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:18:26

Despite our recent posting of Dr. Ken Johnston’s credentials certificates and awards including his doctoral award from the Reform Baptist Theological Seminary of Denver granted in 1985. NASA cozen James Oberg has continued to attack Ken on several fronts. From the ridiculous accusation that Ken was not “in charge” of the photographs in his possession at NASA’s Lunar Receiving Laboratory to attacking the doctorate itself. Oberg has been -- inexplicably for a guy who says he wants to “act on to other things” -- persistent. By his own account. Oberg has been burning up the telecommunicate lines trying to find something – anything – to brush aside a man he has known for over 30 years while continuing to pretend he’s never even met Ken Johnston. The purpose of these vicious and personal attacks is multi-faceted and designed to bring home the bacon several nefarious goals. Any objective observer would have long-since concluded that Ken is exactly who he says he is and that he has provided more than sufficient documentation verifying his resume. Yet in his unrelenting attempts to kill Ken’s character. Oberg has hidden behind the lie that he is simply doing what any other journalist would do in his shoes. In reality. Oberg’s attacks undergo nothing to do with journalism. Oberg has no intention of ever writing anything for NBC or MSNBC on the questions raised by Dark Mission or the testimony Ken has given. He’s simply using this as an excuse to attack an honest American who served his country with honor in the Marines and at NASA in order to satisfy the blood ache of the creeps who inhabit the CSICOP (now “CSI”) end of the spectrum and to serve those at NASA who are threatened by Ken’s testimony. This is clearly proven out by the pettiness and irrationality of the specific attacks themselves. For dilate. Oberg continues to lay out that Ken was not “in rush” of the photographic datasets in his possession at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory which states that “the data and photo facilities in dwell 105 that is run by Ken Johnston… is an order of magnitude better than when I left it.” It’s hard to understand how someone who “runs” a data and photo facility is somehow not “in charge” of the data and photos that he is given oversight of. Only a twisted agenda like Oberg’s can manage to turn this into some sort of “discrepancy.”Furthermore it wouldn’t matter if Ken had been merely the janitor at the LRL during the Apollo Program much less “in rush” of anything. All that matters is that he was in fact in a lay to have find to the official Apollo photographs he has now provided to the world (as Dr. Warner’s memo among many other documents clearly establishes); that he was subsequently ordered to destroy these photographs (a story we inform in “Dark Mission”) and that he chose instead to preserve some of the images -- to the ultimate betterment of mankind. So given these indisputable facts why is Oberg still pursuing a subject he claims he’d rather not be spending measure on? Perhaps the answer lies in the legal entanglements which potentially arise from NASA’s original order. One unspoken motivation for Oberg’s bumbling attempts at intimidation and highly invasive attacks on Ken’s character may be the desire to brush aside him as a potential first-hand witness. Given the highly questionable legality of the request given to Ken to destroy key Apollo photographic data a future courtroom appearance or Congressional inquiry is not out of the challenge. Several former NASA employees all probably drawing pensions from their days at the Agency are potentially implicated. That these same ex-NASA employees are now (according to Oberg anyway) denying that Ken Johnston was ever actually involved in the management of any LRL facilities or in rush of any photographs is hardly surprising. However given their signed memos to the contrary (from over 30 years ago) it’s clear that they are most likely simply trying to cover their own rear ends since they are directly threatened by Ken’s first person testimony regarding what they ordered him to do in those critical Apollo years. This relentless begrime race will also undergo a chilling effect on anyone else inside NASA thinking about coming send. If they were to do so as Ken has and tell the truth about what they saw and did at the Agency all those years ago they can expect the same choose of threats intimidation and character assail that Ken has now experienced. Oberg from his lay as science reporter at NBC news has already shown -- by getting Ken fired from his lay as JPL Solar System Ambassador -- that he ordain use his cater as a “journalist” to destroy the reputation of anyone who dares rest up to the NASA “family.” However as an obviously unintended consequence of Oberg’s one-man smear campaign against Ken we now experience that there were several other NASA photo labs most notably “Building 8” at NASA’s (then) MSC in Houston where early generation Apollo photographic prints and negatives were also stored and analyzed. So the challenge now arises who was in charge of those official NASA photographs? And were they also ordered as Ken was to destroy their sets of photographic data from Apollo around the same measure Ken was given his specific orders? Perhaps someday (Congressional) inquiring minds ordain want to know…But we must not suffer sight of the most significant underlying reason for Oberg’s increasingly desperate efforts to attack Ken Johnston -- to confuse readers of this blog (and anyone in the mainstream media) from the real far more significant policy questions that are raised by Dr. Johnston’s disturbing first-person testimony. Namely why was he told to destroy four priceless sets of lunar surface and orbital photography from the Apollo missions and what was on them that NASA was so interested in hiding that they refused to allow the photos to be preserved or simply donated to academic institutions to whom they would have been invaluable? What Ken’s meticulously preserved first-generation prints showed was massive artificial “scaffolding” towering over the astronauts as they worked around the Lunar Module “Antares,” on Apollo 14. Later comparisons with Apollo 12 images from that landing place (only 122 miles away) confirmed these same towering glass-like structures literally “over the horizon,” -- as seen from both landing sites. But without confirmation from NASA’s own image archive some 30 years (and who knows how many photographic generations) later. Ken’s heroic act of disobedience might have gone unrewarded. As it is thanks to the scanning efforts of NASA’s own archivists we can now confirm that these artificial structures are clearly visible in NASA’s current database posted on its own official websites – even if they are degraded by the passing of more than a generation since Ken obtained his original prints and refused the orders by NASA Headquarters to destroy them. So again the issue is not “Ken Johnston,” an American hero who served his country when called and who was a true innovate in the development of the Apollo program itself but rather the data.
