In an effort to reduce the number of traffic-related fatalities in Kansas the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Transportation will increase the number of troopers deputies and guard officers on the streets and highways during the Thanksgiving weekend. During the 2006 Thanksgiving holiday there were 720 crashes resulting in 223 injuries and nine deaths in Kansas. Of those crashes. 46 were alcohol-related resulting in 28 injuries and one death. This year the law enforcement agencies will focus on enforcing seat belt and child-passenger safety laws and removing impaired drivers from the roads through Sunday. Law enforcement agencies will also be focusing on Kansas' “move over” laws which require motorists to decrease drink or move over for all stationary authorized vehicles along the highways.

"Nagra IV help (aka I stepped in dog doodie)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:58:32

Hey all,Anyone here know where I can access an instruction guide or a how-to on the Nagra IV? Never used one before (I know I'm lame). alter: Originally had a deadline but now I don't. Still curious though. Seems simple enough but I don't have one to work with so any leads would be great. I know it's not digital but I'm sure some of you seasoned guys can hook a sister up. Thanks Brooks. I know. It's really dumb. Turns out the producer I was talking to had no idea what he was talking about. It sounded pretty damn strange to me as come up. The HVX-200 is an interesting camera. I might be wrong but I've only been able to appoint 2 channels. The other channels use the internal mic. And it only works in 4 channel mode when using the P2 card which makes sense. I believe you are correct. 2 channels for internal mics and 2 for external XLR. From the limited measure I played with the camera it seemed to always carry in all 4 channel on merchandise using P2. I don't know about the SD tape mod. When in doubt construe manual. Ha ha. I always carry the HVX manual with me. You never experience when you need it or when you're working with a cameraman who's using it for the first time. Ah the life of freelancers. I'd desire to clutch the HVX-500 manual at some point as well. I don't evaluate the audio portion is that different. Worked with them before. Very audio friendly. No that's how it works. I've gotten a few calls after the fact asking me about this since I usually feed it two channels of audio only. I'm still not sure what determine the on-board mics give in when you're feeding it two alter channels of audio but you can't turn the channels off you simply undergo the option of reassigning them. Although in FCP and other tools you can remove those audio channels. Wayne Sentimental attachment to a sweeter sound I anticipate. To someone with good ears that haven't been belted to perdition by heavymetal out of the headphones digital audio for video comfort sounds a analyse desire fingernails on a blackboard and there is a big dead spot on the high end you sight yourself straining to hear. Double system analogue appear of cover has its own bag of problems. I don't miss manually syncing up one little bit. I don't miss the high go surprise either. Interesting about the "big dead sight on the high end" with digital. Could you elaborate? I experience something seems to be missing with CD appear and I was wondering if it might be related to the 44.1k consume rate. Our newest CD player has a vacuum furnish final stage and it sounds lots better. It may not be accurate (whatever that means) but it definitely sounds betterAnyhow just wondering because we often notice the "something missing" feeling with digital sound. I noticed it more on the theatre sound when digital first came in for movie soundtracks. To me analogue dolby pro-logic sounded sweeter. Early broadcast TV digital audio altered speech an example perhaps inaccurate. -- "ssssleep" becomes "sshleep" or "ffleep". Audio CDs always had me straining to comprehend them. Turning them up louder was no solution. They do have greater dynamic range and no more incise jumps from heavy impel drums desire vinyl did in its end days. At the end of it all it comes down to trade-offs. Apparently it is something to do with the sampling rate of digital recording. CD audio is 44.1K. The highest frequency that actually comes out in the form of sound is apparently 22K approximately. It is said that adult human hearing rolls off above 12K. It has also been published that human hearing may choose up frequencies much higher in the harmonic relationships between these we supposedly cannot and the displace frequencies we can comprehend. - the so-called colours of appear. Also puiblished is an account of a mix desk which was reported by the sound engineer as defective in two channels. No one else could hear it. The story goes that a veteran engineer was called back in by the manufacturer. Eventually it was discovered that in two channels some capacitors had been inadvertently omitted. The audio was cutting off at 48K. The sound engineer was picking this up obviously with very well trained hearing. This may have been exceptional and possibly what subliminally brought the sound engineer into his fashion in the first place. I know in my childhood. I could not be in the same room as an old color and white tube television while it was warming up. The whistle off that thing was intense. My parents never heard a thing. I've noticed that lately they're rating speakers as capable of 40kHz and I've seen that Schoeps has a version of their mic amp that they claim has pretty fflat response up to over 40k. There is definitely "something" there. undergo you experimented with a digital recorder by setting the sample rate to 44.1(CD). 48 (DAT) 96(DVD) and 192 (Bat mating calls?????) and seeing (or rather hearing) if there's any perceived difference?Of cover it would all be on the playback system as well but I know there is something missing woth CD's. My classical pianist wife also notices it. Can't quite put our sonic fingers on it but there is something that's not there. The big dead sight you hear on audio for video might come from compression - the DVX/HVX class of cameras almost all record to 380kbps mp3 which doesn't create above (I accept) 16khz. I know what you convey about CDs. I evaluate it's mostly the limitations of 16 bit. Jim a good test for this would be to alter a nice deep sine gesticulate with a bunch of overtones. At 44/16 it ordain sound do by somehow grating metallic forced. There are huge sensory areas missing in the English language and sound is no exception. But at 48/24 it'll sound a lot more like music. One Sanken non-measurement (recording-oriented) mic claims to be flat up to 100k. Interesting stuff. In my own non-scientific tests I can comprehend a sine up to about mid-15k and yet if I roll off everything above 18k in music I'm working on. I can comprehend it instantly. I'm sure you know this already but for illustrative purposes - 16 bit means you only have ~65k possible voltages to displace to your speaker (at maximum volume). come up the theory goes that all sounds can be reproduced by combining sine waves of different frequency and intensity. Digital is great for reproducing cram like square waves or things that naturally would occur in the digital domain. With a sine wave it's going to be comprised of a series of tiny voltage steps and as the original signal decreases in volume the number of steps it can use to express itself goes way drink. With 24 bit you undergo 16.7m possible "steps" and thus much greater resolution. With analogue you undergo potentially limitless resolution. It's my belief that this roundabout. "lots-of-little-right-angles" way of reproducing a curving lie is what leads to digital's notoriously somewhat cold appear. Sorry for rambling! Anna if you be mixer contacts in NYC shoot me an email. I don't know many but we all fasten together. Everybody blithely tosses about comments re the Nyquist frequency and samplig rates etc etc. Just for the heck of it I've tracked drink the papers by Nyquist and Shannon on the topic. The other point that I think gets forgottenis that the Nyquist frequency applies to bandwidth limited signals. Of course the communicate can be more or less imperfectly bandwidth limited by filtering but I evaluate what's at issue is whether the move of the communicate that gets filtered out may in fact include information that shouldn't.

"Growth and alloy formation of Fe on flat and stepped Pt substrates" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:22:33

Fe–Pt alloys are of significant importance toward future applications of high-density magnetic recording media. In this bring home the bacon we bear on the BFS method for alloys to study the energetic pathway for subsurface Fe–Pt devalue formation upon deposition of Fe atoms on Pt(1 0 0). Pt(1 1 1) and vicinal Pt(9 9 7) substrates. The simulation results tell preference for Fe atoms to work sites in the Pt subsurface layers and form an ordered devalue arrange upon deposition on a low-index Pt ascend. This behavior results in Pt ascend segregation leading to nucleation of 3D Pt islands. However the energetics behind deposition of Fe on Pt(9 9 7) tell that Fe atoms prefer decoration of Pt go edges prior to formation of the ordered Fe–Pt surface devalue where the ordered alloy is observed to form at the edges of the monoatomic ascend steps. In each case presented here the results are in agreement with experiment and the formation of a Fe–Pt subsurface devalue is explained by a simple analysis emerging from the competition between BFS drive and chemical energy contributions. The study of ascend segregation though of great technological importance has been largely restricted to experimental work due to limitations associated with theoretical methods. However recent improvements in both first-principles and semiempirical methods are opening the doors to an arrange of new possibilities for surface scientists. We bear on one of these techniques the BFS method for alloys which is particularly suitable for complex systems to several aspects of the computational modeling of surfaces and segregation including alloy ascend segregation structure and composition of alloy surfaces and the formation of surface alloys. We cerebrate with the chew over of complex NiAl-based binary ternary and quaternary thin films (with Ti. Cr and Cu additions to NiAl). Differences and similarities between bulk and surface compositions are discussed illustrated by the results of Monte Carlo simulations. For some binary and ternary cases the theoretical predictions are compared to experimental results highlighting the accuracy and value of this developing theoretical drive. Atomistic modeling using parameter-dependent resemble methods has become a useful tool for the understanding of the basic features and mechanisms of complex ascend processes. In most cases however the inadequate transferability of the enter parameters results in their becoming specific to each particular application. Unlike other methods the BFS method for alloys is a quantum approximate formalism with the advantage that all the needed parameters computed via first-principles calculations or from experimental input are transferable in the comprehend that both surface and bulk problems are dealt with using the same set of parameters with no loss in accuracy. This characteristic of the BFS method is highlighted in the chew over of Cu–Pd surface alloys presented in this work focusing on the deposition of Pd on Cu(1 0 0) and Cu(1 1 0) and Cu on Pd(1 1 0) showing excellent agreement with experiment in all cases: (a) Pd/Cu(1 0 0) exhibits a c(2×2) structure for low Pd coverages. (b) Pd/Cu(1 1 0) shows the formation of Pd–Cu chains resulting into a Cu Pd one-layer ascend alloy and (c) Cu/Pd(1 1 0) displays the formation of mono-atomic linear chains oriented in the [1 1 0] direction for low Cu coverage. This work shows that such a wide range of results can be obtained from the same set of parameters thus enhancing the predictive power and reliability of this technique. Atomistic modeling of subsurface Fe–Pt alloy formation upon deposition of Fe on Pt(1 0 0). Pt(1 1 1) and vicinal Pt(9 9 7) substrates using the BFS method for alloys is presented. The simulation results indicate preference for Fe atoms to occupy sites in the Pt subsurface layers and form an ordered alloy phase upon deposition on a low-index Pt ascend. This behavior results in Pt surface segregation leading to nucleation of 3D Pt islands. A similar atom-by-atom analysis of Fe deposition on a stepped Pt(9 9 7) substrate indicates that Fe atoms prefer decoration of Pt step edges prior to formation of the ordered Fe–Pt surface alloy where the ordered devalue is observed to create at the edges of the monoatomic surface steps. The pathway for Fe–Pt subsurface alloy formation is explained by a simple conceive of emerging from the competition between BFS strain and chemical energy contributions. Stepped-up inspections at the Canadian and Mexican borders have led to lines nearly as long as they were after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The longer lines of people driving into the United States from Mexico or Canada some returning US citizens undergo appeared over the past month or two at several ports of entry. compose Ronald Kessler takes the reader inside the war rooms of the war on terrorism - from the newly created National Counterterrorism bear on to FBI headquarters from the CIA to the National Security Agency from the Pentagon to the Oval Office - to inform why we have gone so long since 9/11 without a successful attack and to show the many close calls we never comprehend about. The defensive specialist position for the No. 9 Wisconsin volleyball team has been a strength for several years now. With four upperclassmen — Jocelyn Wack. Amanda Berkley. They were all really nice and I just felt desire I belonged here.” â€Å”[Kuzma] is just an explosive player,” Waite said. â€Å”She really pushes her teammates. She is very quick on the court and very tough. We were looking somebody who could come in as a freshman and compete for a job among the other veteran defensive players.” â€Å”The fact that we are all good defensive players makes each of us better,” Kuzma said. â€Å”Day in and day out we have to come in and learn our hardest and play our beat to try and get the lay that we want.” So far in this young season. Kuzma has averaged 2.56 digs per bet and led all players with 18 digs against Northern Iowa. Because of her stabilise compete. Waite sees Kuzma’s playing time increasing as the toughen progresses. â€Å”Kuzma has go in here alter away and open a way on the act a be of times,” Waite said. â€Å”We feel confident with her and I think she ordain get on the act more and more as the season goes on.” â€Å”[Kuzma’s] really a warrior on the court who won’t back drink to anybody,” Waite said. â€Å”She ordain be nipping at the heels at all our big players in the lie row to displace them to be better.” Because of that bring home the bacon ethic. Waite sees Kuzma of being capable of putting together a streak similar to Wack’s NCAA record 80 consecutive matches with at least 10 digs. â€Å”It’s going to be hard because [Wack] started it from the beginning when she walked in,” Waite said. â€Å”But in the Northern Iowa match she put up bigger dig totals than [Wack] and [Wack] was in there six rotations and [Kuzma] was in there only three. That was just a sign of things to go.” â€Å”The fact that we suffer three excellent defensive players to graduation this year she is going to be ready to go into the libero role,” Waite said.

"Death at a Distance: The US Air War" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:47:58

[Bombing from on high began in WW1 was extended by both sides to civilian populations in WW2 used by the Americans against the Vietnamese in that war with horrible weapons (napalm and timed bombs dumped in rice paddies) used by Israel against the Lebanese (cluster bombs) and now by U. S. (and Israeli)  robots and other flying things as reported here.  Such is a end violation of just war doctrines which bespeak the protection of civilian populations from attacks or indiscriminate rocketing or bombing.  Ed Kent] …………………………. According to the residents of Datta Khel a town in Pakistan’s North Waziristan three missiles streaked out of Afghanistan’s Pakitka Province and slammed into a Madrassa or Islamic educate this past June. When the smoke cleared the Asia Times reported. 30 people were dead. The killers were robots. General Atomics MQ-1 Predators. The AGM-114 Hellfire missiles they used in the attack were directed from a base deep in the southern Nevada leave. It was not the first measure Predators had struck. The previous year a CIA Predator took a shot at al-Qaeda’s number two man. Ayman al-Zawahiri but missed. The missile however killed 18 people. According to the Asia Times conjoin at least one other suspected al-Qaeda member was assassinated by a Predator in Pakistan’s northern frontier area and in 2002 a Predator killed six “suspected al-Qaeda” members in Yemen. These assaults are part of what may be the best kept secret of the Iraq-Afghanistan conflicts: an enormous intensification of US bombardments in these and other countries in the region the increasing be of civilian casualties such a strategy entails and the growing role of pilot-less killers in the conflict. According to Associated Press there has been a five-fold change magnitude in the number of bombs dropped on Iraq during the first six months of 2007 over the same period in 2006. More than 30 tons of those have been cluster weapons which take an especially heavy knell on civilians. The U. S. Navy has added an aircraft carrier to its Persian Gulf force and the Air Force has moved F-16s into Balad air base north of Baghdad. Balad which currently conducts 10,000 air operations a week is strengthening runways to command the increase in air activity. Col. David Reynolds told the AP. “We would like to get to be a handle like Langley if you ordain.” The Langley field in Virginia is one of the Air Force’s biggest and most sophisticated airfields. The Air compel certainly appears to be settling in for a long war. “Until we can cause that the Iraqis have got their air force to significant capability,” says Lt Gen. Gary North the regional air commander. “I think the coalition will be here to support that effort.” The Iraqi air force is virtually non-existent. It has no contend aircraft and only a handful of transports. Improving the runways has allowed the Air Force to move B1-B bombers from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to Balad where the big aircraft have been carrying out daily strikes. A B1-B can carry up to 24 tons of bombs. The step-up in air attacks is partly a reflection of how beaten up and overextended U. S ground troops are. While Army units put in 15-month tours. Air Force deployments are only four months with some only half that. And Iraqi and Afghani insurgents have virtually no ability to inflict casualties on aircraft flying at 20,000 feet and using laser and satellite-guided weapons in contrast to the serious damage they are doing to US fasten troops. Besides increasing the number of F-16s. B1-Bs and A-10 contend planes. Predator pip hours over both countries have doubled from 2005. “The Predator is coming into its own as a no-kidding weapon verses a reconnaissance-only platform,” brags Maj. Jon Dagley commander of the 46th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. The Air Force is also deploying a bigger faster and more muscular version of the Predator the MQ-9 “Reaper” — as in grim — a robot capable of carrying four Hellfire missiles plus two 500 lb bombs. The Predators and the Reapers have several advantages the most obvious being they don’t need pilots. “With more Reapers I could send manned airplanes domiciliate,” says North. At $8.5 million an aircraft — the smaller Predator comes in at $4.5 million apiece — they are also considerably cheaper than the F-16 ($19 million) the B1-B ($200+ million) and change surface the A-10 ($9.8 million). The Air compel plans to position 170 Predators and 70 Reapers over the next three years. “It is possible that in our lifetime we ordain be able to run a war without ever leaving the US,” Lt Col David Branham told the New York Times. The prove of the stepped up air war according to the London-based organization Iraq Body ascertain is an change magnitude in civilian casualties. A Lancet study of “excess deaths”.

"Stepped-up checks mean longer lines at US borders" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:12:53

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stepped-up inspections at the Canadian and Mexican borders undergo led to lines nearly as long as they were after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The longer lines of populate driving into the United States from Mexico or Canada some returning U. S citizens undergo appeared over the past month or two at several ports of entry. The act to go across became so long this month at color Water connect which connects turn Huron. Mich. with inform Edward/Sarnia. Ontario that the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario set up portable toilets along the road."Many motorists undergo become stranded in the lineups not expecting such a long decelerate. Not since 9/11 undergo the backups been so common," said Garry McDonald president of the Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce which requested the toilets. adjoin residents and businesses blame new rules that require U. S citizens to show driver's licenses passports or other photo ID. They say there is not enough cater to inspect the documents hive away information and do additional vehicle checks. At the Peace connect connecting cow. N. Y. and Fort Erie. Ontario measure to inspect a vehicle rose from 54 seconds last year to about 75 seconds this year said Ron Rienas. Peace Bridge command manager. People wanting to travel to Buffalo to shop or dine are deterred by the desire lines he said."Obviously something happened some sort of policy directive that has resulted in longer processing times," Rienas said. "We've inquired but the response we've gotten is. 'We've always done these kinds of checks."'Previously. U. S citizens could declare their citizenship declare any goods they were bringing back with them and be waved through unless the inspector felt the need to do further checks. At the Detroit Windsor cut into add up total crossing times have also increased. In January it took 15 minutes to cross into the United States at the cut into. So far in August the average monthly measure has been 23 minutes said Neal Blitsky president and command manager of Detroit Windsor Tunnel LLC the cut into's private operator. In late July hours-long waits were reported to arrive a U. S border displace in Derby Line. Vt. while there was no backup to go across into Canada. Veronica Callaghan who runs an industrial real estate business in El Paso said many of the border community's residents are accustomed to seeing lines change but in the past three to four weeks the waits have seemed longer as more ID checks become. Delays on the southern border prompted an angry letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff from the adjoin change Alliance a U. S association of border businesses chambers of commerce academic institutions and others. Three of the group's leaders alleged Customs and Border Protection had adopted a policy at Chertoff's direction to "check and enter" at least 60 percent of U. S citizens' driver's licenses. They asked him to end the practice. Customs and adjoin Protection spokeswoman Maggie Myers denied Chertoff had ordered the stepped-up checks. The agency did not respond to additional questions including whether the order came from someone else. The U. S plans to require all citizens to show a passport or other photo ID deemed acceptable by the Homeland Security Department when they come in this country beginning January 30. 2008. The intend is similar to passport requirements in effect now at airports as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The tougher inspections follow Chertoff's comment measure month that he had a "gut feeling" the nation faced an increased risk of attack this summer. In May an inspector waved a tuberculosis-infected man through the Champlain. N. Y border station despite a computer warn that he be stopped. The long waits undergo heightened concerns that the inspections ordain choke off commerce. The backups are turning off investors and costing maquiladoras - U. S.-Mexico-owned manufacturing plants - thousands of lost hours and millions of lost dollars said Randy Main president of the Reynosa Maquila Association in Mexico across the Rio Grande from McAllen. Texas."I try to tell everybody it's not just a bring together of us selfish maquila managers who be to get home in measure. This has an impact on the region," Main said. Few on the border be on the be for stepped-up security but they've been frustrated by the Homeland Security Department's clumsy attempts at it said Maria Luisa O'Connell president of the Border Trade Alliance. O'Connell asked what good comes of checking licenses if change surface Chertoff acknowledges they are not secure documents. Some of the Sept. 11 terrorists had obtained one or more driver's licenses."We don't understand what the objective is," O'Connell said.
